@@brittreacts I know you've mentioned not knowing them before Sesame Street, but you should really go down the rabbit hole of watching their performances on the Sing Off. They're all on You Tube. It was an a cappella competition reality show that only lasted for a few seasons, but it brought them to the world, and they are still some of my favorite covers they've ever done.

Jump down the hole, it's worth it. All the way back to The Sing Off. You asked how they formed. The back 3, Mitch, Scott and Kristen have known each other since middle school. They applied to be on show and needed a bass and vocal percussionist. They knew of Avi, then bass and found Kevin on KZread. They work their butts off, you're right. They've been together so long now it's almost second hand.

Yes, this was Baby Tonix when they were broke and just starting out but they found their footing, ,so to speak, and persevered to what we know and love today. And, they achieved this all on their own with support from their fans. And you would be correct that it is a one take endeavor though they do three or four takes and pick the best of the lot.

Pentatonix has several "Evolution of..." videos. All are performed in a single take, no cuts, no edits. They do the entire medley several times (usually about 4), and then pick the one they like best to publish. The videos are Evolution of Music, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. If you'd like to see them perform live, I highly recommend the Popspring 2016 video. It's a little longer (about 15 minutes), shot during the Popspring concert series in Tokyo by MTV Japan, so the audio and video quality is excellent. It includes 3 original songs (Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, Water) and their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley.

Music is what rescues my soul. It can make me laugh out loud or dissolve into a blubbering, weeping puddle... and not care who sees me. Listening to perfectly-executed, complex, and beautiful performances, like Pentatonix always delivers, makes me lightheaded with wonder, then ache with the desire for more! They are geniuses at creating emotionally thrilling adventures in music. (Oh! And I like your hat, btw.) 🙂

The three standing up L-R Mitch, Scott, Kirsten, met sometime around middle school. They were in choir together and they sang together everywhere they went...including when they would order at Starbucks! That is why their harmonies are so tight...they have known and loved each other most of their lives. In fact, all five are loving people.

Scott and Mitch met in CATS, children's art and theater school back when they were 10yrs old. Then met Kirsten in middle school, side note she dated Mitch in middle school and Scott in high school. So they've been singing together since middle school. Scott wanted them to audition for the Sing Off and did send in a video of just the three of them. They were told that the minimum # of members in each group would be 5. So they found Kevin through his you tube channel and Avi found through a friend of a friend. And that's how they came to be Pentatonix.

They found Avi Kaplan (Bass) and Kevin Olusola (Beatbox, Tenor, Cello) while they were looking to fill out the group to compete on 'The Sing-Off' which is basically 'American Idol ' for acapella groups, and their entire season is available on KZread. Mitch Grassi (Glasses - counter tenor), Scott Hoying (tall blond - baritone, but can sing bass when Avi is taking the lead, also hits very high tenor notes), Kirsten or Kirsty (rhymes with thirsty - sings from 1st alto to soprano), Avi (pronounced ahhhh-V) Kaplan (Basso profundo to tenor but probably feels more comfortable in his mid range), and Kevin Olusola (beatboxer -tenor, plays the cello and speaks Mandarin fluently - Renaissance man). In 2011 Pentatonix (no "The" in front) appeared on the television A'Capella contest called "The Sing Off". It is so worth reacting to each one of their performances (there are 12 plus one finale) one at a time. Pentaholics LOVE going on that journey of discovery with you. But please do them in order and play the episode all the way to the end because they usually have something to say after the judge's comments (Shawn Stockman - Boys to Men - is one of the judges!) They won in 2011 & one year later "Pitch Perfect" was released. Coincidence? I say, "No". I believe it was because PTX showed the world what A'Capella could be. One person's opinion. Thanks for your reaction. REALLY enjoyed it.

If no one has mentioned it, I believe I heard that they did indeed film this as a one-take. Three in the back row were classmates going thru school, found the other two in order to go on a reality singing competition to round out the group (the bass an acquaintance of a friend and the beatboxer on the internet), which they then won. I also suggest that you go back and watch the SingOff competition because it not only covers the back story but it shows the group come together and "find that Pentatonix style of sound." They met in person just days before the auditions. Some of it's raw but it's all fantastic. Arranger is often guy in the middle back with Ben Bram but I think they're all doing some now-adays. And yes---download away!

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZread, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZread videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZread), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZread, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed in 2023. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Season 3: Pentatonix competed. Season 4: Home Free and Voiceplay competed. You can learn a lot about the history of the groups from this competition series.

And i second Tamara's suggestion below, watch the singoff videos. You'll see amazing growth as a group during those weeks.

I love this so much. I can tell that music touches your soul - it does that for me as well. One of my stupid human tricks is my ability to blurt out what year songs came out. I moved around a lot, so I associate songs with places... it freaks people out sometimes. Also, "please go have the day you deserve" is the most boss exit ever.

I’d like to hear you react to some of the older music in this medley, like Paul Robeson’s Old Man River, Andrew Sisters’ Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Johnny Cash’s I Walk the Line, Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba, Ben E. King’s Stand By Me, anything by the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Aretha Franklin. Other artists from earlier decades include, Joan Baez (All My Trials is fabulous), Woody Guthrie, The Brothers Four, Everly Brothers if you love close harmonies, really the list is endless. I kind of envy you the chance to discover all this wonderful music for the 1st time! 😊

This was really early in thier career. They won the "Sing Off" show -they won $200K and a Sony recording contract. The immediatly moved to LA (same apt building) and Sony dropped them a few weeks later because they couldn't figure out how to market acapella. So they started practicing and doing KZread videos - mostly on the couch like this and the stairwell of the building. They now have over 200 official music videos, 2 full original albums and like 5 Christmas albums - including the one nominated for a grammy this year. They have 3 grammy wins over the last 11 years. All the "Evolution" videos, even the new ones, are one-take, what you see is what you get videos. Basically if you see a mic, it's done live. The only time they use instruments, you will see them in the video. They are perfectionists and purists so you can easily watch any video of them performing live and it will sound as good, if not better than the official video(as long as they have a good sound guy on site).

You can watch their very very very first beginnings on KZread. They were contestants on "The Sing Off" and the three 18-year olds (who went to high school together) had to go and find a bass (they found Avi) and a beat boxer they saw on KZread named Kevin. The 5 of them came together just for The Sing Off. All of their performances are in order on KZread.

You need to find “The Sing Off” tv episodes they are in on KZread. It was the beginning of Pentatonix as this 5 person a cappella group. The 3 standing up were all in choir together in high school in Texas. They wanted to be on the Sing Off but the rules for the show said the minimum for a group was 5. SO they had to get the 2 guys sitting to get on the show. You can watch all of the episodes they were on and see them really progress and improve over the course of the season. Spoiler Alert! They won the season and they have been going and going ever since!

Pentatonix came together to compete on NBC's a cappella competition series "The Sing Off", which is a terrific series, and they won their season. Another group which won a season of the series was Home Free; good friends with Pentatonix. Between the two you have a world of extraordinary a cappella to explore. Both groups are phenomenal. Note, Home Free is rather unique as an a cappella group in that they come from country roots, although they cover a wide variety of genres and create original music as well. Check out their cover of Boyz II Men's "End Of The Road", for example (Shawn Stockman was a judge on the season they won).
