The "yodel" technique is "keening" - it's an Irish thing that Delores brought to alt-pop stardom. Anytime someone reacts to the Cranberries, I'll always recommend "Daffodils Lament" - it wasn't released as a single (at least in the US), but it is a hauntingly beautiful song with one of my favorite musical shifts ever! It starts of almost oppressive, and then midway through the song it's like a fog clears and the song is joyful and strong and uplifting!

So, the first Woodstock was in 1969. Then they did a few more in the 90s. The first was the EPIC one, with hippies and mud and so many fantastic bands. The others were pale copies of that. Now, to the Cranberries - the lead singer. Delores O'Riordan, is a powerhouse, and she is dearly missed. That's more keening than yodeling. Keening is a tradition in many cultures, but the word comes from the Irish, caoin (pronounced keen), and has a long tradition in Irish mythology. If you haven't checked out Zombie, you definitely should - more rock/powerful and unlike most of their other songs. Linger is delightful. Promises. Most of her other songs are more ethereal than Zombies.

The Cranberries were an Irish band, formed in Limerick in the Irish Republic in 1989. Dolores joined and became lead singer/songwriter in 1990. As far as I am aware, all members of the band were from Limerick. Her Southern Irish accent was part of the charm of her singing style, the other part is an Irish style of lament singing, called keening. But I do think that Dolores herself described it as yodelling.

Strange, but before I watched this reaction video by Britt, I was thinking about what words best describe the Cranberries "Dreams" song, and I decided that "magic" was the best word. If any song embodies a sense of magic, "Dreams" does. Then at 05:40, Britt says, "[Delores] is so magical. She's like magic!" So clearly this song conveys a sense of the magical or mystical elements of our world. Maybe it's because of the "primal cries" in the song, the sort of singing you might have heard thousands of years ago in ancient magical rituals. Another commenter, diceau, says that this type of singing is called "keening", which "is a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition." A beautiful song, whatever the reason.

Only to be bottomed-out by the 30 yr Mess.O.S. that was Woodstock '99 (I was at that one and saw the worst of our generation take baseball bats to ATMs and burn the place down during the Red Hot Chili Peppers closing set with the peace candles passed out earlier in the day to the crowd.) 2) Cranberries are the real deal. The Woodstock festivals were each a product of their time. The original 4-day festival took place during the Vietnam war and the civil rights movement, and provided an opportunity for the 500k people who attended to connect through music and spread a message of unity and peace. There were 3 fatalities (all accidental). It had a benign chaotic magic, which is why it could never be duplicated. The 2-day 25th anniversary festival in '94 was an attempt by the promoters to capture the aura of the original, and in many ways there were echoes of it. 500k people attended, the weather turned very wet and muddy, and there were 2 fatalities. Some of the alumni who performed at the original returned, along with a roster of heavier modern performers. Unfortunately, with Woodstock '99, elements of poor management, budget cuts, high temperatures, misogyny, inadequate security, nu-metal, a disgruntled and angst-ridden millennial crowd forced to pay inflated prices, and the lack of sanitation were a disastrous cocktail, eventually spilling over into chaos, violence, sexual assaults, riots and several fatalities. It turned into a "Trainwreck."

It's funny that you notice the behavior of the crowd doesn't seem to match what's happening on stage. That's classic 1994 -- for some reason, "moshing" was really popular. Every concert had a mosh pit no matter what. It made more sense for the hardcore grunge that was coming out at the time, but not so much for bands like the Cranberries. Still, everyone wanted to "mosh" because, uh, I have no idea why. Woodstock was not a yearly festival. The original was 1969. It didn't happen again until the 1994, for its 25th anniversary. The vibe was very different from the original peace-and-love festival. Another Woodstock festival happened in 1999, and that one turned into a disaster with riots, arson, and deaths.

Please, Please, Please, even if not online, watch the original video of this song (not the official, search for DREAMS FIRST VERSION), and see this wonderful woman as a 18yr old singing this song AND Harmonizing with herself.......... MAGIC kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZH2uuJitiK6fc9o.html

I really wish people would NOT listen / watch songs they’ve never heard before LIVE. The live versions loses something than what we know from the studio or originals. Just me venting a bit, because you’re not hearing it the way it should be heard AT FIRST.
