Story has it that JT (the bass player) and the drummer just came up with the bass and drum line during a sound check. Chris heard it, liked it, told them to keep it going while he came up with words. Masterpieces R Us. On the spot. Pure, unfiltered, unadulterated genius. The scraping sound you heard at the top is a bowed cymbal. By dragging a bow across the edge of a cymbal you get the scraping sound plus some of the overtones of the cymbal itself. My visual are chains being dragged along a cement floor. Again, genius.

Well Chris Stapleton could sing the phone book, and I'm all for it!! And yeah him and the Blues😜😜😜. A couple of story songs I think you'd love are Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John, and Tennessee Ernie Ford's Sixteen Tons. Agree with the above Red Sovine's Teddy Bear and Phantom 309 are so great. I was never really into country, and Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers and Colter Wall (check out his stuff: The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie and Kate McCannon) have opened my eyes to this genre. I’ve been on a Britt marathon so far this morning.

There's a group called The Fairfield Four, a group of old black men. I wish they could have closed this song out.

Death Row Records should've changed its name after this song came out. I've been hoping you would find this song. He does an amazing job painting a picture with his playing, and with his singing. Song fades out like the executioner just finished his work. Really gets into the Chicago Blues side of Chris Stapleton. I think that effect is a train - some of the wheels grate against the rails. There's one about a block from me that sounds just like that. He's got a couple other songs along this vein, "Or Was it 26" is one, but "Midnight Train to Memphis" is just an AMAZING rockin' song about 40 days in jail. Great guitar hook.

This is the greatest example of music communicating emotions without words that I know of. Chris' words add to the story but the emotions are in the music.

It's a bunch of different people doing their covers of the songs on Metallica's black album. He did Nothing Else Matters & it sounds like something you'd hear in a revenge movie. You are gonna love it! His singing live is 10 times better than the studio versions. I saw him with the Eagles in 2018 in Dallas, and he got more of a reaction by the crowd than the Eagles did. Have fun.
