This episode was among the last episodes that featured Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers (Mike and Gloria) who left the show in 1978. They were renting from George, which is why he was there. They ended up spending the last few episodes living with Archie and Edith, allowing the show to come full circle from it's beginning. They were written out of the show by having Mike accept a teaching job in California.

Archie was insecure about his status in life. In fact there's an episode when Edith tells Mike that Archie yells at him all the time because deep down he was jealous of him. Archie wasn't educated and Mike was going to college and had his whole life ahead of him.

Mike Stivic was played by Rob Reiner - son of actor Carl Reiner. While he's mostly known as "Meathead", he went on to have a very successful movie director. For movies I think Britt would like that he directed, I'd say Stand By Me, Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery & A Few Good Men.

Lionel Jefferson explains in one episode that his mom and dad received a court settlement from a traffic accident and that is how the Jefferson's first dry cleaners started. They became successful and opened more stores because of this. And Mike and Gloria moved out and started renting the Jefferson's old place, which is right next door to the Bunkers.

The actor Rob Reiner has played Michael Stivic a.k.a. meathead in every single episode, including all those that you have seen. The house that Archie Bunker and George Jefferson rented was a duplex. The stair wall represents the common wall between the two units. The halves were typically painted two different colors, and had separated stoops with only the space of a narrow driveway between each of the duplexes.

The Jeffersons were a spinoff of All In the Family. What made it unusual is that Norman Lear's sitcoms had Archie saying outrageous and bigoted things about blacks, but George Jefferson would retort with bigoted remarks about whites, while their respective wives, Edith and Louise, were friends and even loved each other. To Norman Lear these were like real life people, not sitcom characters.

Hey Britt. YES! I grew up in the 70s. Back then, yes, "back then," people were closer (especially with neighbors), more social, had more time, no internet, or social media, and a knock at the door meant "company!" I remember my younger sister and me running and sliding to the door because we had "visitors." It meant fun, laughing, hearing stories, having milk, coffee and cake, etc. It was common for people to have pies and cakes for coffee for company. Even though my mom would bake cakes once and a while, we had something from Entenmanns and Stella D'Oro for "company."

My mom always had cake, brownies, lemon bars, etc. always at the ready and she always had the coffee pot ready to plug in for when company dropped in. I was 6 years old when this show started. Everything about this show represented real life at the time. You gotta remember that this was the first show on TV that represented real family life. Before this show came on TV families were perfect and goody goody and every problem was solved in 30 minutes. This was the first show to have the sound of a toilet flushing, it showed married couples arguing and hitting for some sex. It showed infidelities and deadbeat relatives. It showed all the flaws and joys of family life. Archie would complain about his gas, Gloria would complain about her period, Meathead would suffer from erectile dysfunction. Edith would find a lump on her breast. These are all things that were never shown or talked about on a TV show until this show came on the air.

Have you ever heard that a man's house is his castle? Or have you ever seen a movie or a show where the king is sitting down on regular chair or in the biggest chair like the leader? Well Archie Bunker's had the biggest chair because he considered the head of the household. Nobody suppose to sit on the throne of the King. Period! Now as far as Florence Henderson is concerned, she was a white woman who played the part of the Mom on The Brady Bunch. On The Jefferson's there was a lady that played the part of the maid that they called "Flo". Her name was Florence Johnston. The show that the guy that they referred to as "JJ" or "Kid Dynamite and the little girl who played his little sister who was Janet Jackson. Their was a producer named Norman Lear. He came out with "All in the Family"(1971-1979)& the spin off was "Archie Bunker's Place".(Sept 13,1979-April4,1983). "The Jefferson's". January 18,1975-July2,1985). "Maude"(1972-1978). "Sanford & Son (1972-1977)."One Day at a Time".(1975-1984). "Good Times".(1974-1978). The Jefferson's were Archie Bunker's next door neighbors. Then when the Jefferson's moved out to Manhattan, they rented their house to Gloria and Michael "Meathead) Stivic. Then when Mike finally got his Master's Degree, he and Gloria and Joey moved to California. And of course "The Brady Bunch was from September 26,19-9-March 8,1974). Like I said before Enjoy. Adios.

lemon loaf is definately considered a cake... fun fact, in some part of europe (especially ireland) north american bread is legally considered to be cake, because of sugar content exceeding what is legally allowed to be called bread, as bread and pastries are taxed at different rates. so technically most people have "cake" around their home. i actually used to buy mini cakes, to eat for munchies. so yeah some people do have cakes to eat... this is more of a product of a time when neighbourhoods were much more social then they have been since the digital era, i used to have a neighbour that loved baking and would bring plates of baked goods to people's homes especially in the winter, and would do the same with her backyard grown produce in the fall.... one of many ways a lot of neighbourhoods have changed over generations... well that and ever increasing poverty, which leads to less freetime and more anxiety, which isn't a good way to encourage societal interactions that foster that kind of social habit.

You are always so shocked at the rude racial comments. I get it--you didn't grow up in a world when that kind of overt racism was the norm and dare I say acceptable. For people back in the 70s to see TV characters making fun of racism, showing just how rude and inappropriate it was, it helped to expose people's unconscious bigotry and racism. And that's what made it such great TV.

They were considering buying the house the Jeffersons once owned and had been renting out to others. They show George calling them from the "East side" apartment, and he basically forces them to buy that house by dropping the rental price lower and lower until they agree. Why does he make it so low? Because he knows Mike moving just across the street would drive Archive crazy! :)

The series was on for 9 seasons so the actors playing the characters changed not to mention that trends changed in the way of fashion and hair styles and also, as in real life, Meathead matured and evolved and went from being a deadbeat hippie living with Archie to becoming a college professor and renting the house next door to the Archie that is owned by George Jefferson.

Very funny show and I was a bit older by the time it started so I didn't need it explained as much any more. :) Three's Company is another show from this time period that was really funny, if you ever want to react to it.

Interesting observation about having cake. When I grew up, around that time, there was always homemade cake or pie or cookies around. Many women then stayed at home. My grandmother was always in the kitchen making cakes and other desserts all the time.

Not having ever lived in New York, I can't comment on the Jefferson's "moving on up" location, other than to say I remember George owned a string of laundromats by the time of "The Jeffersons," so perhaps he only owned one or two (or none) when he lived next door to Archie. Just speculation as far as how George financed the move "to a dee-luxe apartment in the sky," but perhaps there's an episode of either "All In The Family" or "The Jeffersons' that provides all the details that I'm unaware of.

@@CoastalNomad To be honest my memory of all the details of the two shows is a little blurry as well, so I just Googled it, and it turns out you're correct. For some reason, I misremembered his businesses as being laundromats but they were in fact dry cleaners. I guess that's what I get for not Googling it first lol. Thanks for the correction.

George Jefferson owned a dry cleaning business, and it was so successful he ended up opening like seven stores, I think. That's where his money came from, though.

My mom was a stat at home and there was constant cake. Typically a double, sometimes triple, layer. A cake would last a couple / few days so yeah, cake was often on hand.

All in the family and Married with children were back in the day when nobody got insulted, upset or got their panties in a wad. We just laughed about it together. It was funny. Not meant to do damage or harm. It was an escape from the harshness of the real world and a glimpse into the comedy of the real world that made living tolerable. And we all still need that. Nobody laughs anymore. Everybody is too busy pickin shit apart to find a bitchin point they can gripe about. How bitter people have become 😢. Well nothing is gonna dull my sparkle!!! So if it's funny, I'm laughing at it. And I hope you laugh at it with me. Everybody. Time to put away hateful things and have some fun. Love ❤ your show.

Mom or Grandma would bake on weekends for family dinners. So yeah, there was cake, pie, or rolls around. You have to understand there weren't bakeries in the supermarkets back them, they were separate and very expensive. Not to mention, baking was cheap back then. Cooking was cheap if you knew what you were doing. The best meals I ever had were home or at a friend's house. In Arizona, I had.better Mexican food at a friend's house than I ever had in a restaurant.
