This was a live appearance on the Andy Williams Show. No tricks, no redos, no second chances, no autotune, no nothing, but his talent. This is one of the all time best live performances ever. Also, I believe Bobby Hatfield's mother was in the audience and smiled at the end because he absolutely nailed it in front of her. True greatness.

This is, almost totally unarguably, the finest live vocal performance ever. Bobby's total control over his voice is astonishing and he utilises nearly every note in 4 octave range. I don't believe there's a singer alive who can do this without studio fakery. Even more so, this live version is even superior to the studio recording of this amazing song. Seeing him bite his lip at the end, he knows he's nailed this, with his mum in the audience who hadn't seen him perform live since Bobby and his singing partner Bill Medley began enjoying hit records. As for further exploration into the 1960s, absolutely yes. No decade has been more diverse, accepting, nor more creative than the 60s. It's a deep well of some of the greatest music ever done.

One of, yes, for the time, certainly, but have you heard Dimash*, Angelina Jordan or Diana Ankudinova, or any of the other 'modern' outstanding singers. Morgan James and Haley Reinhart have some outstanding performances on Postmodern Jukebox - "Dream On", "Creep" and "Seven Nation Army" being a selection. There are astounding singers, and performers, from different countries, and in different genres, that we will never hear of, to our loss. *For example, kzread.info/dash/bejne/iW16zqaGc9KefLg.html - for Dimash. His recorded range is just shy of 7 octaves, and he hints that there's more.

This song has been sung by hundreds of people but none sings it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version featured in the film 'Ghost' was great but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his mother was in the audience listening to him sing professionally for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. At the end when he hits the high note he does not contrort his face like other singers do when hitting a high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say 'I nailed it'.

It's really bittersweet that Bobby chose his music over the professional baseball career he could have had. Had he chosen baseball, he might still be with us, but then we would not have his hauntingly beautiful music to listen to. Bobby truly did have the voice of an angel, mesmerizing, addictive, and just a pure joy to listen to. I could not chose a favorite from all his solos as they are all amazing. He will always be my favorite male singer and the owner of this song. There really never will be another Bobby! If you want to hear more of Bobby, listen to I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons) or Only You, or Stay With Me, or My Prayer, or Crying in the Chapel, or For Your Love, or Ebb Tide...just to name a few!

This young lady is probably the best love song ever and with a singer who has a pure honest voice, no machines to make it sound good he sing's from the heart. Bobby Hatfield is who that is.His story is tragic but he left us with a song that has touched the hearts of billions and stood the test of time. His counterpart is Bill Medley that formed the group the Righteous Brothers. Loved your reaction. Here's a kind of request, watch the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze and you'll get to the scene that plays this song and it will have you in tears.

I'll always have a place in my heart for the Righteous Brothers. I used their song "Soul and Inspiration" to break out of the friend zone with my sister's best friend. It was the early 80's, and with the help of some friends, I got her to the middle of the roller skating rink. From there I sang "Soul and Inspiration" to her, it way the scariest but one of the best times of my life. Sadly, she passed in 2014 from cancer, but with very few regrets. We knew love that is extremely rare these days.

Every time I hear this song it brings me back to a birthday party I went to in Brooklyn when I was around 17 years old. When this song came on the record player this incredibly beautiful angel I didn't know took my hand and dragged me onto the dance floor. She took both my hands and melted into to my arms. We danced this whole song and I swear I don't remember anyone being around just her. I never felt anything like that before and since. She turned this big tough kid into mush. We both fell in love that night and dated for years. Unfortunately I lost her to an illness. It's 50 years and I miss her everyday and never will forget that angel I fell in love with that night on that dance floor to this song. Miss you, love you and we will be together again.

Slow dance. You said it! Why did you look like he was singing directly to you? 😉 This song is so enchanting and passionate. Knowing the context makes it even more poignant. The context is about a prisoner who misses his wife's touch and love and is in great anxiety over whether time, which can do so much, has eroded her love for him (Are you still mine? I'll be coming home, wait for me, wait for me). The song is from a 1950s movie, Unchained, about this man (he sings it in the movie).

Just twenty four years old and already he had mastered the delicate balance between virtuosity and soul, both of which he had in spades. They broke the mold after they made Bobby Hatfield.

This is the music I listened to as a teen, back when musical artists had incredible talent without filters and voice manipulation; just incredible talent--not just for performing songs, but for writing and composing beautiful melodies and lyrics, as well. Thank you for featuring Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. It brings back wonderful memories.

Im a sixty six year old guy and I never get tired of hearing this beautiful song by Bobby Hatfield. I love seeing younger people discovering these classics. Its to bad the video which is excellent pans back right at the epic moment Bobby hits that incredible crescendo at the high point in the song! Sometimes I hear people who are reacting to the song wonder how they could stay still and be silent during such an incredible performance. I think because they were recording this performance the audience was instructed to remain quiet. I wish I could teleport back in time and be able to sit there in the front row and be blown away by the most epic vocal performer’s performing one of the greatest love songs ever. To put the song into context it was written for a prison movie in 1958. That would explain the lyrics of the song. Timeless I only wish Bobby Hatfield was still with us so he could see how people of this generation love and appreciate his incredible talent and the beautiful music he and Bill Medley gave us!

Aileen Prior to his singing this classic, Bobby and his singing partner, Bill Medley were talking to Variety show host, Andy William. They were kind of ad libbing prior to Bobby's to this classic song. Andy asked them "who will sing this song?" Bobby replied, me. Bill stated I guess that I will sit aside. I think Bobby was battling a cold and his mother was sitting in the audience. Sadly, Bobby left us too soon in 2003.

Great reaction. Just to let you know, you made a lot of sense, and what you said was spot on. There are 2 Righteous Brothers who are the duo, and they both have fantastic voices. Their voices are distinctly different, but they blend together like a hand in a well fitting glove. If you do another reaction, I would recommend doing one where they are singing together. I think their best and most successful song was You've Lost That Loving Feeling.

Bobby Hatfield's mom was in the audience to listen to them in person for the first time. Bobby was nervous about how it would turn out and was also fighting a cold when he sang this song. I think the grin at the end maybe was one of relief that he really nailed it.

"You've lost that loving feeling" and "Soul and Inspiration" are two songs with both Bobby and Bill singing together. The Righteous Brothers (and other similar bands/groups of the era) are often refereed to as "Blue-eyed soul". This is a song you dance to with your wife/GF after making her a special dinner just for the two of you and having a romantic evening at home alone.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher counter tenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. In 2003, Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. *The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." The gold standard of performing this song.

I am a vocalist that has been majorly influenced by Bobby. I had the pleasure of meeting bill at his club, the hop in 1980. I had a beer or two with the best soul singer that I have ever heard, bill medley. of course Bobby Hatfield was also the best but one was a baritone, the other a tenor. I told bill that I sang quite similar to Bobby and that I had the same vocal range, he laughed and said really ?? I laughed and busted out some ebbtide and unchained melody. I will never forget the look on bills face !! he said, DAMN , you really can belt it out and you do sound a helluva alit like Bobby. I said thank you and that I was working hard to become a respected rockstar. he said to drop back in and asked me if I wouldn't mind singing livin feeling, soul & inspiration and unchained melody. the rest is history.i am 68 years old and have sang with some of the best musicians in the biz. I even had a friend of mine suggest that I replace Bobby and sing with bill. it was around 2010 and I was still batelling drugs and alcohol, namely cocaine, the same drug that contributed to Bobby's death. I am clean and sober and plan on making a comeback. I owe everything I am as a singer to Bobby. rest in peace, Bobby. I love you man!!!

I was born in 82’ in Iowa in the states and I remember on the radio they had an oldies station and we listened to it going to my grandmas house about a 5 min drive away and it was thee most nostalgic, beautiful, harmonious music EVER! It was music from the 40s, 50s, and maybe 60s and I absolutely loved it soo soo much. It was taken off the air probably 86’-87’ and that was a sad day for me and I never got to express how much that music made me feel. It was like this music. So beautiful and a time capsule for how good music used to be. It was sooo entertaining and man did you just love it. It had a feel all to its own. I’ll never forget it.

Bobby died at age 63 in 2003 in a Hotel in Kalamazoo MI, while touring with Bill Medley, the other Righteous Brother. He never made it to the stage. It was only 50 minutes from my house and i almost bought tickets to tat show. I heard the news on the car radio the next morning, and balled my head off.....I grew up with all this music including them, and I was a music teacher. this was Bobby's shining moment in front of his mom in the audience. Aileen, you have a wonderful smile...

Bobby did this effortlessly, his talent was solid gold, it was such a shame how things went for him, leading to such a premature passing. He had it all, this was before all the crap used today for singers, auto tune, lip sync and every other electronic gadget used today that didn't exist in 1965, just Bobby's pure talent. His Mom was in the audience watching her son knock it out of the park. RIP Bobby.
