What you have to understand about this album is that "The Wall" is a metaphorical wall around his heart to keep people and things out so he doesn't get hurt. This abum is about building that wall with various things that hurt him over the years like an overbearing mother, a terrible school system, the fear of going to war, etc. You definitely need to listen to this album from start to finish.

I prefer listening to record/disc 2 first. Ending The Wall on “Goodbye Cruel World” seems to fit the story better. And the background music in “Outside the Wall” that flows into “In the Flesh?” is like a hint that the records/discs are in reverse order.

The song is about an overprotective mother and the damage she did to him. She taught him how to start building the Wall to close himself off from anything that might hurt him. The character, Pink, does that over the course of his life and is the theme behind the whole album. The musical tone and the contrast of the lyrics represent his mixed perception of his mother.

Roger is part of a generation and a victim of WW2 where many fathers were sent off to war and never returned. His father was killed in Italy and his remains were not recovered. The song reflects Rogers view of his relationship with his mother. You get a much better sense of this in a later documentary that Roger did where he travels the route that led to where his father died in battle. Also Roger lost his grandfather as a result of WW1.

You obviously got that The Wall is metaphorical for this dude finding his way in the world, dealing with loss, resentment, an overbearing mother, among other themes all explored in different ways on the album. With that said, there is definitely a political undercurrent running throughout the album. War, Fascism, on a literal sense the Berlin Wall (where Roger Waters performed this live after it came down). So you can’t entirely separate the metaphors with some of the literal symbolism. An amazing album to listen to all the way through, with each song telling a piece of the larger story

I bought this double album masterpiece in 1980 when I was 18 years old. It is basically a story from start to finish. Therefore, when someone not familiair with the content or meaning of The Wall listens to a single song somewhere in the middle it seems totally bizarre. A few of the songs from The Wall became big hits like Comfortably Numb, Hey You, and Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) Since there are actually three versions with the same name in the Albums. I remember back in 1980 when the single Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) was moving up the charts in the US and other countries, I heard on the radio that England (where Pink Floyd is actually from) was trying to ban the song from the radio there because it had improper grammar that 23 school children sang just for the song without permission from the school. The school music teacher on his own brought the 23 school children to the studio and within half an hour Pink Floyd had their rebellious children singing, " We don't need no education. We don't need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teacher leave them kids alone. "

His overprotective mother is just another brick in the metaphoric wall that contributed to have him socially isolated. The songs of the first half of the album are just pointing what contributed to that wall. The second half is his journey trying to get free of it. And one song you I really think you will love musically, feeling and lyrics is High Hopes. Nightwish even covered it :) High hope is part of their last true album, The Division Bell. All the songs have the same theme, communication. Lyrics hit hard.

Sort of a trip -- my older brother passed away in 1982 at the age of 26. We both loved Pink Floyd. He turned me on to "cooler" music around 1970. The music my family and I thought was weird and even scary. But then I heard "Fragile". And "Roundabout." I mean ... I HEARD it. The rest is history. 70's classic rock history.

Like others say, the album tells a story. There are parallels to Mother also being the government. This was released in the post cold war era, so it was very topical with its political commentary at that time. And yes, love Pink Floyd and Eminem. For me the Pulse Concert live recordings are... A must see experience for anyone wanting a feel for what Pink Floyd is. The music, the stage show, Gilmore guitar. I re watch that live show several times a year. It's perfect.

The album is a requiem to the post WW2 era. The wall represents barriers between all facets of life. The particular song “Mother” is a microcosm of how everyone can build walls metaphorically or literally. At the end the child asks, [why did it have to be so…high?] Walls a good when used properly

I absolutely listen to both. I’m a fan of powerful poignant lyrics. I like Ems songs when he is being goofy because they make me laugh, when he is being serious, each bar isn’t a double entendres, it’s maybe a triple and sometimes quadruple. And Floyd’s lyrics , while not containing as many double meanings, they don’t have to, because they know what buttons to push to make you feel sad, hopeful, depressed and joyful all at the same time. Both are artists that make you feel something

What you have done is akin to reading a random chapter from a book. With Pink Floyd in general and The Wall in particular, you can enjoy the aural majesty, but the lyrics really are contextual. This is one small part of a much larger story. The Wall was intended to be experienced as a whole. Its is, essentially, a single piece of music with many movements.

The song that chills me out the most is Shine On You Crazy Diamond. But all of their stuff is like a drug to my brain. What sooths me the most is the topics of the songs are always about life. And usually it's about the crappier parts of life. But it feels like they are just saying they understand how it is, how messed up things can be, and you're there, I'm there, they are there or have been there. It's like a musical acknowledgement of how the drudgery of life can really steal your soul, but here's a little of it back. Like they are saying "We know. We KNOW.". BTW, I do not drink or use any form of recreational substances, and I have only ever listened to them sober. They truly have some sort of ASMR that hits parts of my brain in an altering way. Not saying anyone has to do that, just saying that even sober the music alters my conscience a lot. Oh, and I first heard them when Dark Side Of The Moon came out, my father bought it and played it a lot. I was 5. Never stopped listening to them, never tire of them.

Lack of context, this is a Rock Opera concept double album. In concert it was very theatrical with enormous props, then it became a motion picture that is available on DVD. The only comparable album and movie would be 'Tommy' by 'The Who.' Both albums feature a character traumatized by the loss of a father in war and further dysfunction in family relationships and the damage caused the character.

shine on u crazy diamond appears on the album 'wish you were here' another floyd album to experience in it entirety. dedicated to sid barret a founding member of pink floyd who took a way too large dose of LSD and never came back. he was found in the commun where he lived trapped in his own mind. 2 very telling lines on the album -" now theres a look in your eye, like black holes in the sky" "nobody knows where you are, how near or how far"

The Wall is a phycological wall, it's the wall we all build. Some just build walls with no windows or doors only to find there is no escape. An overbearing mother is just one of the bricks that makes up the wall here. Movements of our lives make up the bricks that we build our walls with.

I think you might find Eminem fans that are also Pink Floyd fans, but not so much the other way around. Music started to change in the late 90's... the industry really... and it, at least for the time being, killed any chances of a bank like Pink Floyd ever happening again. Those of us old enough to live through the good days look at music from say 2000 on with a side eye. Seriously listen to The Wall from start to finish, listen to the story being told, the layers and double meanings, triple meanings to the lyrics, all the different instrumentation, the different levels of recording, how spacious everything feels from utter silence to tremendous bursts of power, from simple harmony lines, to some of the greatest guitar work ever recorded anywhere... then listen to any Eminem album you like with the same discerning ear. Eminem understands music, he's a great rapper, and he's been widely popular, so I'm not taking away from his abilities, but if you compare him as a song writer and musician to Roger Waters or David Gilmour... he's just not even in the same league. Record sales... sure... same level. Musicianship and creativity... nope, not even close. Sorry.

Yes to your question. That’s the beauty of music. It’s like a different blanket to put on for whatever life’s weather is hitting you with. Eminem when I’m looking for music to get me amped, or Pink Floyd if I want to think or reminisce. At 47 I have a ton of strong memories - both good and bad - tied to this band who, at least for me, has the most unique sound of any band before or since. But my point before rambling about irrelevant things is most people (at least in my small circle) have a very eclectic taste in music. I’m trying to pass the torch to my daughters everyday.

Pra curtir Pink Floyd, em primeiro lugar, temos que entender o contexto e o tempo. Essa música é da década de 70, quando tudo era completamente diferente de hoje. Como acho que tudo piorou de lá pra cá, então essa música é atemporal. Abraços do Brasil ❤️

I think at the very end you began to figure it out. It’s basically about an overprotective mom not wanting to let go of her son and trying to keep him at home. Also as far as your music taste goes with Eminem I think that you’re getting older, and now that you have experienced other music Especially music from the 70s I think that you’re starting to demand more from your music choice you seem to be drawn into more of a spiritual awakening from your music taste now and that is a beautiful thing as others have mentioned a Pink Floyd album as you know, from dark side of the moon is basically meant to be one long song with a bathroom break in the middle so you can flip the album and finish out and the way we listened back in that time was the ultimate procedure was a beanbag chair a big set of headphones, a big gulp. The lights turned off, and the stereo cranked with your eyes closed and tell your mother to come in and interrupt you and you throw a shoe at the door picture that in your mind they were beautiful time. Wish you could’ve been there to one last thing David Gilmour did an interview many years back and they asked if he could have anything he wanted what would that be? And he said “I would love to sit down and hear Darkside the moon for the very first time. I thought that was a hell of a statement you’re doing a wonderful job. We’re behind you all the way.

Listened to both of them growing up. I was in Jr. High or High School when Eminem came out. My uncles were all in bands throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s....so I grew up on Floyd, amongst so many other Classic Rock bands, so to speak.

I have been a fan of Pink Floyd since they came out, and I was in junior high (I'm 67). "The Wall" and all it's songs and the movie are iconic, and so are they. I'm a musician, and my life is richer because of Pink Floyd and all of its incarnations and conflicts, i.e. Roger Waters.

A wall of alienation from society, built brick-by-brick, from, as a child, losing his father in the war, then an overprotective mother, public school, on-and-on throughout his life, keeping the pain inside as the wall grows higher and higher. These are the people who often end up filling their loveless emotional space with hatred (and an affinity for dictators).

I could be wrong but from my understanding the album is loosely based on the life and experiences of Roger Waters. It's an allegorical look at Pink Floyd’s childhood. I’m not gonna go too deep into it but I’ll try to break down the song. For starters, The first song in the album: “In The Flesh?” the death of his father. The song has vocals that turns into yelling. And then there’s helicopter noises and then it sounds like something dropping (presumably a bomb) then the song cuts to a baby crying. We know that his father died either before he was born or when he was far too young to remember him. His mother was obviously very distraught and devastated. And whether she realized it or not, she became very over bearing and toxic. She clung to him basically because he was all she had left. That’s what Mother is about. Her not wanting him to leave her and her not wanting him to be his own person (cause then he’ll leave her). “Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true. Mamas gonna put all her fears into you.” Making him dependent on her. “Mamas gonna keep you right here under her wing. She won’t let you fly, but she might let you sing.” “Mama will always find out where you’ve been.” Not letting him/not wanting him to leave. “Mother should I build the wall?” “Of course mamas gonna help build the wall.” “Mother did it need to be so high?” The Wall represents 2 things. 1. The wall that separates him from other people, ostracizing him. 2. And the emotional wall, blocking out your feelings. That’s part of his alienation.
