An interesting thing about this song is if you break down the phrases you see its the stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and the "hallow be thy name" at the end is acceptance.

IM's signature song. The album was a landmark for heavy metal and changed music forever. They practically invented the sing along for heavy metal. Yeah iron maiden is really good I wasn’t that into him as a teenager I was in the more heavier stuff but they are definitely an excellent band I had the joy of seeing in a few times and they are absolutely amazing live

Greatest metal band of all time. Check out Aces High, Where Eagles Dare, Somewhere in Time, The Evil That Men Do, The Trooper, Powerslave… okay you know what, this list is going to be too long… just check out all their 80s stuff. I don’t know much beyond their 80s work. Their first two albums have a different singer, they changed drummers after this album and Nicko McBrain has been their drummer ever seen. Their most consistent lineup is Steve Harris on bass, Dave Murray on guitar, Bruce Dickinson vocals, Nicko McBrain on drums, Adrian Smith on guitar. And they’re all in the band now. This is such a fun band to be into, and that goes beyond their music… so become familiar with Eddie 😆

Yes their 80s stuff is timeless, but their 90s and 2000's stuff is absolutely incredible as well. Check out: Lord of the Flies, The Clansman, The Wicker Man, For the Greater Good of God, Raimaker, and Stratego. Iron Maiden released their 17th album Senjutsu last year and are currently on a world tour supporting it. Check them out. You might just reconnect with an old friend. Up the Irons!

Awesome you're getting into Maiden, Lil! At the time of the "Number Of The Beast" recording, the band's lineup consisted of Bruce Dickenson on vocals, Dave Murray & Adrian Smith on guitars, Steve Harris on bass, and Clive Burr on drums. "Run To The Hills" is my personal fave from the NOTB album, but dang near every track off their next album, "Piece of Mind," is a no-miss banger!

I love the way Bruce holds his notes in this song, such a powerful voice.

Maiden still going, still touring, new album dropped last year, still putting on amazing shows. Rime of the ancient mariner, Alexander the great, Nomad, Hell on earth, Paschendale, Talisman to name just a few. Can’t really go wrong with Maiden.

I'm 49 and I grew up with three older sisters who between them brought me up in the late 70's to mid 80's musically with a combination of classic rock, metal, indie, alternative, punk and new wave. The first live band I ever saw was Maiden at the NEC, Birmingham, UK back in 1988 when I was 15. They blew me away and they are definitely one of the all-time greats of metal. This song in particular is truly one of my all-time favourite heavy metal songs. It has everything! Slow build up, tension, drama, theatrics, high notes, low notes, Bruce Dickinson hanging on in there for really bloody long notes. Superb lyrics. Amazing guitar solo. Fabulous guitar harmonies between Adrain Smith and Dave Murray. Cracking drumming from the late, great Clive Burr (before the long running legend Nicko McBrain took over the sticks). The master and main man behind Maiden, Steve Harris driving it all with those filthy bass lines. It's just the absolute perfect heavy metal song to me. I know others may well disagree. This is just purely my own opinion :) It's great to see the younger generation still having huge love for classic bands like these :)

Bruce Dickenson, also known as the Human Air Raid Siren because of his vocal range and power. He retired from being a pilot but when he was still flying he worked on his stamina for the live shows by rollerskating around the runway and sing the ENTIRE concert set at full power!

The term existed prior but this was the moment that really separated it. Let me tell you, doesnt matter which song you listen from them. They got 100+ incredible songs which i wish i thought the same for other groups. Unfortunately there isnt a group in my opinion with more than 15-20 great songs, and this guys have over a hundred (for me, in my opinion). I recommend you listen to as much of their music as you can, you will be glad you found them. Every song gets better as well with more listens. There are sone of them you might hear and like, and after a few listens you will start to love it! Up the Irons!

Avenged Sevenfold has easily more than 20 amazing songs IMO. I'm a huge fan of them and their musical knowledge and boldness. Interestingly enough, they were hugely influenced by Iron Maiden, Metallica and guns and roses. If there is one album that reminds me of Iron Maiden is City of Evil

They played the damn WHEELS off that song there, smashed it, tore every piece of frickin' fur off it. Last I heard it was spotted wobbling around, on bare rims, not an ounce of fur on it, and absolutely crushed to beejeezus.

Iron Maiden is a classic heavy metal band from the UK, and they have gotten more prog-oriented metal these last 2 decades... Steve Harris (bass) formed the band in 1975... Harris wrote 'Hallowed be thy name' as an ode to a man's final hour before his execution, not as a religious statement, but more about his final thoughts about his faith... it came out in 1982 on Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast'. The band on this recording was Bruce Dickinson (vocals), Dave Murray & Adrian Smith (guitars), Steve Harris (bass) and (the late) Clive Burr (drums)... Burr was replaced by Nicko McBrain (drums) in 1983... Clive Burr passed away from MS in 2013. Iron Maiden was formed in London, UK by bassist Steve Harris in 1975 after he had started writing original songs, but couldn't convince a band to play them, cos they were complicated pieces of music w/ time changes and prog elements. Iron Maiden would be his vehicle for performing his songs. They were a bar and club band for years and went through various members from 1975 to 1979... Dave Murray (guitar) would join in 1976 and became a permanent member by 1977... Paul Di'Anno (vocals) joined in 1977 w/ drummer Doug Sampson. Iron Maiden was finally signed in 1979, just as Sampson left the band... Clive Burr (drums) and Dennis Stratton (guitar) were added to the line-up and recorded the first Iron Maiden album in 1980. Maiden's manager got a local artist Derek Riggs for the first album cover of a shriveled ghoul in the dark streets of London w/ hollow eyes - that became Iron Maiden's mascot 'Eddie the head'... and was used on every Maiden album cover (and singles & t-shirts) in different iterations. The first Iron Maiden album shocked everyone by going top 5 in the UK... Adrian Smith (guitar) replaced Dennis Stratton for the next album 'Killers' in 1981, w/ veteran producer Martin Birch working w/ Maiden in the studio. The band played the US and Japan for the first time... However, vocalist Paul Di'Anno was burning out on drugs and alcohol while touring and parted ways w/ Maiden in '81. Bruce Dickinson (vocals) joined for Maiden's 3rd album 'The number of the beast' in 1982, and the band's popularity skyrocketed as the album hit the UK charts at #1 and went platinum in the US... Nicko McBrain (drums) replaced Clive Burr in 1983 for the 'Piece of mind' album... Iron Maiden were now headlining arenas and delivering platinum selling records going into 1984 w/ the 'Powerslave' album, and touring everywhere they could, including South America for the first time. The band issued the live album 'Live after death' in 1985. Maiden returned in 1986 w/ 'Somewhere in time' and were more popular than ever... but the band's internal conflicts were beginning. After the 'Seventh son of a seventh son' album in 1988, guitarist Adrian Smith left the band. In 1990, the band replaced Smith w/ Janick Gers (guitar) and released 'No prayer for the dying' ... but Maiden's popularity in the 90's was starting to wane in the US... the album 'Fear of the dark' in 1992 marked the last album w/ producer Martin Birch. It went to #1 on the UK charts. But in 1993, vocalist Bruce Dickinson announced that he was leaving the band for a solo career. Iron Maiden hired vocalist Blaze Bayley and recorded the rather dark album 'The X Factor' in 1995, but in the wake of 90's grunge and alternative rock, Maiden's brand of metal was not in demand and the record was a commercial disappointment... Fans also did not approve of Blaze Bayley's vocal style that was different from Dickinson's. The next album 'Virtual XI' in 1998 was their poorest-selling record of Maiden's career. In 1999, the decision was made to fire Blaze Bayley... Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith expressed interest in coming back, so both rejoined Iron Maiden that year and announced a reunion tour, making Iron Maiden a 3-guitar band for the first time w/ Dave Murray, Janick Gers and Adrian Smith... Their 2000 album 'Brave new world' was a huge comeback for Iron Maiden. Since then, Iron Maiden has issued more records that have hit the US and UK charts as their fanbase grew once again, all over the world... I remember this album when it came out, I was in 9th grade and the guys in my shop class where playing this cassette every day….it didn’t take long I was hooked, I became a metal head, my whole attitude and life changed…Iron Maiden has the best of everything from the singer, the bass guitarist and 2 excellent lead guitarist who play in perfect harmony together, there is no particular song to recommend but this song is one of my all time favorites, I would recommend the Live after Death album…every song is great!!

Actually the song covers the 5 stages of grief. Ending with acceptance (''Yeah, Hallowed be thy name'').

Did you notice that the song seems a bit samish till he sings "catch my soul, it's willing to fly away..." then takes off with the crazy soloing - that's a deliberate stylistic move, mirroring the restrictions of his prison cell and subsequent release of the soul upon hanging. Great song.

But heck that CD was Iron Maiden's "The number of the beast" album and did i learn those lyrics inside and out those weeks we were camping? Bruce's vocals are good enough that you still fully understand what he is singing live. And their songs are usually better live.

This band was awesome when I saw live

Interesting to see a young person experiening the music of my youth...i'm 58 and have been a fan of maiden since 1980 and the first album when i was 16. When this music came out heavy metal was a very underground music and the new wave from the UK like Maiden was just so fresh and full of energy that no other genre had at the time , Maiden changed my life and i played in metal bands for years and even though music has changed these guys never shifted from their focus to play honest music ....cheers from New Zealand

Seeing Iron Maiden live is like watching a Heavy Metal opera.

as i'm watching this they had an ad showing iron maidens commemorative stamps with royal mail, i've got them already. 🙂🙂🙂

I remember when this hit the record stores. I knew all the words after about a month and the music was pretty heavy. I never thought about the meaning of those word nor how or why the tempo builds. I knew this was entertainment and that's as far as it went.

The lead singer is Bruce Dickenson and he is a classically trained opera singer who moved into the metal genre

Worth noting Hallowed Be Thy Name was released in 1982 and For Whom the Bell Tolls was a 1984 release.

Hi Lilly Jane. Loved watching your first experience of Iron Maiden. I had no doubt they would blow you away because they are awesome and you have good taste!😁 Since you like Metal with singers who are in a higher register I would recommend Judas Priest - the most Metal of all Metal bands and the pioneers of the cultural appropriation of Gay Biker bondage gear into Heavy Metal fashion. Painkiller is their heaviest song and Breaking the Law possibly their most well known - both vastly different from each other apart from the studded leather. I also think the greatest American Metal band of 1989 - 1992 deserves your attention Lilly. That band is Skid Row. Words cannot express just how amazing they were on their first two albums. Singer Sebastian Bach has the most incredible singing voice as well as the looks of a super model and hair straight out of a shampoo commercial. Skid Row have so many stunning songs I struggle to reccomend only a couple. At a push I would recommend starting with either Slave To The Grind - their heaviest song or In A Darkened Room - a breathtaking power ballad about the evils of child abuse. The vocals on Darkened Room are mind blowing.🤯 I look forward to your next video, Lilly! 😁🤘🤘

I suggest you find a live concert on KZread and check it out. Their energy and passion is simply off the charts. One of the top live bands ever.

Nice to see another modern listener getting into classic Heavy Metal! Since you discovered the magnificence of Iron Maiden, you must also exp!ore classic metal bands Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Along with Maiden they are a consensus top 3 metal bands of all time. For me Sabbath is always #1 but the other 2 are tied for 2nd, they are both that good. For Black Sabbath, start with Sweet Leaf and for Priest, Victim of Changes. Due studio versions first for what the song really sounds like. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I agree all of those bands are super and what I grew up on. however, Iron Maiden is more Progressive Metal. The labels in the 80's were all over Compressed into "Metal or Heavy Metal, you have bands like Europe, Stryper, and Slayer all lumped into the Metal category, thank god 40 years later we have sub genera separations. One other thing Black Sabbath is not really a heavy metal or even metal even tho they are the God Father's of what was to come to be known as Metal, Black Sabbath was more closer to Doom Hard Rock. This is not a slam on your post. To me, it is all freaking great music the whole 70's 80's music was something The 90's had great notable bands but nothing like the 2 decades that came before. IMHO Rob Halford is the ultimate Hard Rock/Metal Singer I am happy someone younger is listening to Dad Metal/Rock 🤘😎🤘

@@LordFenixBloodstone Good stuff no matter what you label it, my other favorite metal/hard rockers of that era would include Motorhead and Blue Oyster Cult, Metallica for me is the best of the post Maiden bands in this realm. Great musicians all.

4:13 That palpable urgency is what is missing in today's music that is snapped to a computer grid, and set at one BMP for the whole song. Songs recorded on tape... usually recorded Live flowed according to the drummer and the band themselves, and changed BMP all over the place. What's known as "the groove"... it comes from the interactions between the band. Todays "Pro Tools" music doesn't have those fluctuations in tempo that create that groove.

I believe this is what they call *POWER METAL* And Power metal is a subgenre of heavy metal combining characteristics of traditional heavy metal with speed metal, often within symphonic context. Absolutely you should check them out live. Personally I like the 2008 in Toronto video. Fun fact Bruce has his pilots license and you see him piloting "the company's private jet" in this vid😁

Iron Maiden's "Caught Somewhere In Time" is one of my favourites. :)
