Lilly, here is the synopsis and moral to the story. A mariner is at a wedding and tells a story to the guests. He starts out at sea and kills the bird of good omen, thinking instead it was a bad omen. Because he did this he and and his crew are cursed and the boat is adrift (the slow portion of the song). The crew start dying, 4x50 men (200). The mariners attitude changes and he blesses the creatures which lifts the curse. The mariners sights another boat and is elated and his sins are forgiven by the hermit. The mariners story teaches a moral to the wedding guests to love all things that God made. I suggest going back and read the lyrics Lilly.

He shot the albatross because he thought it was bringing them bad luck. Although the appearance of the albatross coincided with them getting out of the ice they were stuck in, they then found themselves without any wind. the Mariner blamed the albatross and shot it. It's a very shaky justification which is kind of the point.

@@philsswweightlossdiary2944 Thanks. I should have researched it. I'll edited my comment. This is the answer I found - He mariner shot the albatross because he believed that it was an unlucky omen and the source of their diminished wind. He believed that, once the albatross was dead, the wind would return, and they would be able to cross the ocean at a much greater speed

Had the pleasure of seeing them on this “Live After Death” tour. Best concert I ever saw. Couldn’t hear right for two days, but it was totally worth it. Saw them in a 10,000 seat arena and they just tore the place down. Center seat, upper balcony. It was so loud (but crystal clear) that you couldn’t hear the person next to you shouting. Loved every second of it. Ah, to be young again. Hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago.🎉🎉

Sucks they blocked it, but you got to see it. This is an epic song. Maiden's longest song at the time. We read this poem for my Brit Literature class my senior year and the teacher let me bring this song in and play it for the class. She got into it. A cool teacher. Another great song that tells a detailed story is Alexander the Great. No live performance of that song though.

yes, on the current Future Past tour, they play Alexander the Great live in concert for the first time in 37 years! It's great! Another song i hope the band plays live in concert, before they call it quits, is Empire of the Clouds. 18 minutes of great metal, as Maiden is famous for! Bruce will need to put a piano on the stage, or maybe a synthisizer.

The poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is where the saying of "having an albatross around your neck" arose and symbolizes a burden or unpleasantry that you just can't rid yourself of. An albatross is considered good luck in maritime lore, so by killing it the mariner has cursed them with bad juju. No wind for the sails, no tide to move them, and water, water everywhere but nor a drop to drink(can't drink saltwater)

Over the years Bruce has gotten better at his diction (the ability to sing words and you to understand him). If you were to watch the 2006 flight 666 version you would have been able to understand every word. I personally perfer newer maiden live tracks from flight 666, Rock in Rio, and En Vivo. The only exception is hammersmith 1982, it is an amazing live album where bruce is at his all time peak of his younger days.

Oh to be a youngster these days and having almost 45 years of good modern Metal to sink your teeth into anytime you want. But for those of us who grew up in the 80s, we only had a few years worth of bands and albums to listen to. I didn't seriously get into music until 1986, but even then, the bands that I was interested in, only had 2, maybe 3 albums out, and so we got intimately familiar with those albums. Now, with so many more bands and albums out there, it's hard to distinguish between one band and one album from the next. But in some way I still envy Gen Z and their ability to have access to the 45 years of modern of music. I say that the modern era started in the late 70s...78, 79, somewhere in there, because prior to that, music still had that 60s, and 70s psychedelic sound to it. Very simple guitar riffs with no layering, and tinny to no bass sound at all. Oh there were exceptioms, but for the most part, modern Rock and Metal really didn't get started until 1978/79. Boston got started in 1976, and that was one of those exceptions.

It's a great song, and if you've ever seen them do it live with the effects, it is impressive Great way for that album to end too. As I have understood this song (interpreting a much older work that comes from ??? time ) : Killing the albatross was bad luck, a senseless cruel act, so he and the ship were cursed. Their sails were calmed, ran out of water, and basically all died of thirst (except him, because death's companion spared him as a cruel lesson). So only once he's truly remorseful does albatross fall off, the curse lift, and his (undead) crew sail the ship back home. Once the mariner arrives back (as the only actual survivor), and is with his son and the harbour pilot, and the religious "hermit", the ship sinks. The mariner's penance for having been spared from death is to tell his story for the rest of his life, as a warning against the kind of arrogant cruel sin he had committed.

Coleridge was I poet I learned of in year 8 (so around 14) and we studied his works in English. Of course, by then I was already captivated by metal, and I convinced my English teacher to play this song in class, and while it got a few "funny looks" (it was the late 80's, the satanic panic had not died off), it was received pretty well. (the artwork for live after death, not so much :P ) If I were going to ask you to examine the song, I would consider it as different movements, much like classical, there is the intro of the mariner being the hero, then the middle of him paying the cost, then the end where he "comes home" after the quest, it is the quintessential "hero's journey". I don't listen to this song very often, it requires the right mindset to really "get it" (I don't listen to the wall that often either for the same reason), but it fills me with a sense of........ rightness of the world that perhaps, just perhaps we still deserve hero's. Oh, and if you get the chance, listen to infinite dreams (maiden, 7th son album), while baked, in the back of a car lying down over somewhere very "hilly" so you get the sense of up and down in the car. We used to call it the infinite dreams roller coaster, and it was a mental ride. UP THE IRONS!!

For one of the greatest live Iron Maiden performances in my opinion is "The Red and The Black" from their 2015 album "Book of Souls". It too is about a 13, 14 minute epic of a song that has some awesome guitar solo harmonies going on between all three guitarists. Yes, all three. When Bruce came back to the band in 1999, he brought back Adrian Smith, who left the band after the 1988/89 Tour for Seventh Son. And instead of the replacement guitarist leaving, he stayed because by then he'd been a part of the band for 10 years, which was longer than Adrian's original stint. So Maiden has been a three guitarist band ever since 2000.

Along with Pink Floyd's "Echoes", "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" is the greatest long song ever created.

It’s tough to narrow down Maiden’s “best” performance because they always bring it live. But one of the best would have to be Fear of the Dark, at the Rock in Rio fest (Brazil). I think it was around 2005 or somewhere in the early 2000’s. I would have loved to be be at that show!

Just wanted to say you're awesome and wanted to fill you in on Bruce Dickinson. Bruce's mom was an Opera singer and you can see that he learnt frim her with his signing. He is also an actual airplane pilot. I love this band! Keep up the good reviews! Thanks!

One of the best live performances in my opinion is 22 Acacia Avenue 1982 beast over Hammersmith there is so much energy in that performance it’s crazy and it’s one of my favorite songs to listen to while fried

Their most energetic performances are ones in which Clive Burr was their drummer (1979 - 1982). Clive had a more aggressive drumming style that really propelled the band's music. I would recommend checking out songs from their March 1982 show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. "Murders In The Rue Morgue" or "Sactuary" would be good choices.

Another good storytelling song from Iron Maiden is called "Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.)", which tells about the life of Alexander the Great, the ancient Macedonian king! One of my favorite Maiden songs of all time alongside this and Aces High! I definitely recommend making a reaction to Alexander the Great as well!!!
