First Time in Maastricht Netherlands Look What I found 🇳🇱

We woke up in Maastricht and got out to explore the oldest city in the Netherlands. Right away you get a completely different vibe in Maastricht. Things feel a bit different. Maybe it's the old medieval architecture evident all around the city. This city is full of history, it has been invaded over 20 times in it's history. Maastricht is also one of the msot southern points of the Netherlands and it is walking distance to the neighboring country Belgium. You might ask yourself if you are still in the Netherlands when exploring old Maastricht.

In the neighborhood of Rotterdam, one could have visited Schiedam, Gouda and especially Dordrecht. I recommend taking the Public transport boats to Rotterdam from there. Take the ones that stop in Kinderdijk. In summer you can visit the Zeelandic cities of Goes, Middelburg and Vlissingen and also Veere. Veere is magical on warm summer evenings.

Groningen is quite a drive, but it also has a distinctive character because of it's relatively isolate place, it's still quite lively despite covid and it's of course the ultimate cycling city. Zutphen and Elburg are a quite a bit smaller but very nice looking too.

Maastricht is indeed a beautiful city. I was born and still live here. When its normal, it's a very nice, warm city at all seasons but around Christmas and carnaval, we say Vasteloavend, the most. The church with the Porsche and Jeep is no longer used as a church but is a research institute. And cannons were fired through the holes in the old walls to protect the city from threats. When you are in Maastricht again (after covid-19), you can walk up in the red tower on the vrijthof where you have a nice view.

That church has indeed a laboratory inside. It is rebuild into seperate parts. One is the lab, one is a space for cultural events and it is also someone’s home. That children’s playground you filmed is someone’s backyard. Btw, now you’re in the south, one tip to drive with your rental car: the mergellandroute. You’ll see the Netherlands are not flat everywhere. And it is very beautiful

Since it's the Sinterklaas and christmas season maybe you should find a good pastry bakery and try some of the season specials like speculaas, banketletter, borstplaat. I especially recommend 'gevuld speculaas' which is very different from the other kinds of speculaas. It's soft speculaas with almond paste in between. And there are of course the all season regulars like boterkoek and bitterkoekjes. It's really worth it to get it from a proper bakery instead of the supermarket, and pay a bit more.

And do keep an eye out for a "Bufkes" sandwich shop if you're back in the south, they got amazing Burgundian sandwiches and soups. Awesome video man

nice trip of the NL's so far...... you proved youtube NL's is more than Amsterdam... you seem to enjoy trying streetfood and exploring architechture. You really take your took time to explore. I like it..... Some suggestions for more exploration : i think you haven't explored the countryside yet. Try to find a local who can take you outside in the POLDER: The countryside surrounder allmost every city. Usually filled with grass, cows and canals. Really nice biking routes. occasionally you might find a farmer who sells fresh eggs, flowers, vegetables, milk. Also in the countryside you can often see weird (small) water works. as you know most of NL is underwater. so in the countryside you can see many canals at varying waterheights if you´re lucky see can see some pumps at work to keep our feet dry. I live in sweetlake city.... which used to be a lake. But we drained it and now people live here....you can still see the circular lake shape on google maps. nice biking. But there are many places elsewhere similar in NL's like it i think. So the smaller villages surrounding the bigger or medium cities can be beautiful as well. or what about the AFSLUITDIJK, the massive dyk. If you want to meet some locals. i suggest you find a local "Bij Bosshardt stichting" . it belongs to salvation army. They have community centres all of the Netherlands, where people can have a cup of coffee for free, socialize, play a game, or buy something cheap from the shop. or share a cheap or free meal.) my local centre is still open during corona times, (but with some restrictions). Really enjoy watching this (as a Dutchie) and glad someone took a lot of time and energy to explore and vlog. enjoy the rest of your stay.

Welkom in Nederland :) Btw about the church. I don't know that one personally. But we tend to use churches for more than just religious activities. Some churches are even turned into homes. Most people don't go to church anymore so they get into disuse. Partially because of this we use them for other activities. It preserves the building actually over time.

Next time in Limburg eat a Limburgse vlaai, a kind of pie looking like a pizza. I don't know if you are a hindu and therefore may not eat beef, but another Limburgian delicacy is zoervleis. In Brabant, Limburg and Flanders another delicacy to try is 'frieten met stoofvlees', which are French fries with beef stew. Don't ever call French fries 'patat' instead of 'friet' south of the rivers crossing the Netherlands from east to west.

@@dajjal3820 Maastricht is the capital of Limburg and the Dutch part of Limburg had the status of a Dutch colony ran by a governor by military force, just like most parts of current Indonesia. I think it was around 1848-1866, when a very slow process of emancipation started, just like in all the other Dutch colonies. That makes you and those people in Maastricht strangely being in the same boat.

One of the best cities in The Netherlands because of its different terrain from the rest of the country. Also if you travel a bit farther you can find the three country point between Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands also the highest point in The Netherlands elevation wise :))

If you are in Maastricht, visit the Mt St Peter (Sint-Pietersberg) and farther to the east the Vaalserberg (highest point of the Netherlands in Europe) right on the border with Germany and Belgium (and, for a time, Neutral Moresnet). And still to do: - (Hoge) Veluwe - Harderwijk & Elburg - Deventer - Giethoorn - Ootmarsum (a small city that didn't industrialise and grow large) - Drenthe and the hunebedden - Groningen - Leeuwarden, towns on little manmade hills, the northern islands etc. etc.

A city that has the same kind of vibe is Roermond, it has an old historical center and the biggest MC Arthur Glenn Outlet Center of the world! It's located in Mid-Limburg (Midden Limburg). So not too far away from where you are now.
