Is Maastricht our FAVORITE Dutch City?

We were on an epic road trip through Germay, Belgium, and The Netherlands from our home in Amsterdam and found the time to stop and spend a few hours in Maastricht.
We had an awesome time as we did a little bit of sight-seeing, tasted the local sweet treats and soaked up as much as we could, quickly!

I love Maastricht, even though I'm not living there. It's only about 45 -50 minutes traveling from where I live. Actually, it's kinda like my second home, that much I love it! It has a special place in my heart. The whole area around Maastricht is astonishing, not far from it you can also visit Valkenburg and/or the nearby towns. I hope you guys also visited "De Kruisheren" hotel in Maastricht. It's a big old chapel from middle ages around Cruisader's period. I stayed there for many times. Great vlog guys and keep them going! Many greeting from Belgium (Limburg)! 😍🤩😎👍

Katrina is absolutely right, there used to be a not-Limburg, Limburgse vlaai chain. And it was so mèh in comparison to our vlaai. I live less than 20 minutes from Maastricht, went to school there, go there at least once a month to shop. I walk past that bakery so often, know the mill, but I have never stopped there for vlaai. One of my favorite things to do, is visiting the bookstore, grabbing a cop of coffee and people watch.

Recommendations for next time: The statue of the original musketeer D'Artagnan, he was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673. The caves of the Sint Pietersberg. The Sint Servaas treasury is also quite impressive. If you are interested in natural history, Natuurhistorisch Museum, lots of info on how the hills of south Limburg came to be and dinosaur fossils. Close to Maastricht: the Netherlands American Cemetery, many of our brave liberators rest here and it has a newly opened visitor center.

Next to the Helpoort (gate to hell) you had a discotheque called d'n Hiemel (meaning Heaven). As a young teenager I met my first girlfriend there. We kissed each other for the first time on the small tower next to it, called the Pater Vinck Tower. The Pater Vincktoren was one of forty rampart towers in the second city enclosure of Maastricht and was built in the 14th century. The tower was later named after the Franciscan Friar Servaes Vinck, who was beheaded in 1638 after the betrayal of Maastricht. His head (along with four other executioners) was displayed on a stake on a neighboring roundel, which has since been referred to as The Five Heads. Although I live in another part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, 5600 miles away, I still love to visit my beautiful birthplace! Next time you visit Maastricht you should visit the so called Mergelgrotten. Very interesting!

I don't think anyone is overly upset if you pick Maastricht as your favourite. It's historical and so atmospheric. Even late at night there is still life in the plaza's during summer, which you hardly see elsewhere. To clear this up first: Oily balls (oliebollen) are not strictly seasonal products. You can have them during festivities or the ''kermis'' and it is not sacriligious. The pie issue is very troubling. Vlaaien are flat pies, and we have taart, but unfortunately we do not have cake. Cake is just ONE specific baked good from the oven. (The bland one with no extra toppings.) So in Dutch everything is mostly taart. If you want to get the terminology right: The thin ones are franse frietjes, the medium ones are friet/patat, and the thick ones are vlaamse frietjes. In the north people don't care, however, do not call friet ''patat'' below the rivers. That is, unless you like the controversy.

Yes!!! The effing Treaty of Maastricht. This treaty set up all the parameters of the European Union. It laid the groundwork for all things EU, including the Schengen Treaty which abrogated any need for intra-Eu borders. No shit. There should be a required test on this for anyone coming here to live. Carry on. Be good. Tot ziens.

My parents were from Tilburg and moved to Eindhoven a year before I was born. Ma went to Tilburg each weekend because she had a hard time with Eindhoven/Tilburg pronunciation. I'm no expert on this city, been there only a few times because it is so far far away, but even I can list a few things you missed. Vrijthof square, the Sint Servaasbrug, oldest bridge in NL (13th century). But you? Looking for food and dogs. On the other hand, in only four hours you did manage to make an entertaining video with great editing and music and some jokes. Next time you should stay for a night. It is more correct to call Maastricht the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Netherlands, since it remained an important city in Merovingian and Carolingian times as the seat of the bishop to whom Aachen belonged. In Nijmegen especially the Merovingian times are still a mystery before than the Valkhof castle starts to function in the Carolingian period and for Voorburg there is a huge gap between Roman Forum Hadriani and the medieval village which than is in no way a city ))

I take every one of my American friends to Maastricht. It’s special in that the restaurants serve very good food. Its proximity to Belgium and France has made it a foodie’s delight. There’s even a few hills here and in Vaals. Omg! Lastly it’s more true Dutch than Amsterdam can be because A’Dam has morphed into a cauldron of seedy bars and pathetic coffee shops and drunk tourists. True Nederlanders dislike Amsterdam and we all understand. Amsterdam needs a reboot. A cultural enema so to speak. 😳 First step-banish the cruise ships. Second- stop KLM and any travel agencies from promoting low cost stays in Amsterdam. Third- promote higher end culture and stop advertising the Red Light area and weed. Enough already.

Limburg is an area that is divided between the Netherlands and Belgium. And Maastricht is the capital. Fun fact: the border with Belgium around Maastricht has a strane angular form because it is was delimited by the distance cannons could shoot from the star-shaped city walls. We Limburgians are proud of our linguistical and cultural identity that differs from the rest of the country (just like the Frisians are). So we appreciate people noticing the differences. We also think our cuisine is better, more "Burgundian". So next time try typical Limburgian food like sour meat (in Dutch zuurvlees, in Limburgian zoervleisj), or rabbit in Limburgian fashion, and of course our smelly Limburgian cheese or rommedou. Other cool stuff in Maastricht are de StServaas church, the "caves" or the remains of the city fortress (Hoge Fronten). In the basement of hotel Derlon near Our Lady's church you can visit Roman remains. But the most impressive Roman remains is the bath house in Heerlen. In between the two you have the nice town of Valkenburg with the castle ruins on the hill.

The cafes and restaurants in Maastricht are FAR better than most in Amsterdam. However, we understand there’s demand re “what’s awesome” re Amsterdam. Our favorite Amsterdam restaurants? 1. Seafood Bar. Two locations. Great food. Great Quality. Wow. Nice. (We like the Spui location). 2. Hotel Okura- sushi or teppan yakki. Bonsai!!! 3. Rijsttafel-many good places (eg Samma Sebo) 3A. Hoppe on the Spui- A brown bar that’s at least 400 years old. no food. Just quaff a beerje. I’d go full nuts and order anything with jenever . (Yes. It tastes like pee.)Just be an adult and do it. Make sure the old gents there see you do it. 🤟 4. FEBO- shit food yet perfect when drunk at 3 am. Uitstekend! 😳😵‍💫🤮 5. Robertos ! The Italian restaurant at the Hilton in Amsterdam Zuid. Warning- too expensive, but the food is killer awesome. Really. Just wow. Best enjoyed if on a company expense account. 😳🫣 or your parents insist on treating you to the best. Just don’t let them view the check. 🤭 Our favs in Maastricht? We’re not saying as we don’t want any tourists here. For real. Eet smakelijke en tot ziens!✌️🤟🖖
