Me too, when I visited London we went to try this Indian restaurant that was quite nice, until they tried to add a service charge for seating, which I politely refused to pay, by adding how that made no sense, I'm sure they got it out of me with some special math,lol. But I agree, it's insulting especially when it was expensive to begin with.

J/fyi, if you see service charge in any restaurant bill in india, you can ask restaurant to remove it.. Service charge is an optional fee, if you don't want to pay it, you can ask restaurant to remove it from your bill. Only SGST and CGST is a mandatory tax on every product..

Indian food 3X a day, I'd be in heaven. I was actually eating Indian food as I watched, for breakfast: ) I'd love to try Madras curry in India, it's one of my favorites. I'd heard that American/German Indian restaurants serve their own version of Indian curries - I'm looking forward to more India videos from you to try to figure this out. I recently spent 26Euros on Amazon getting all the Indian spices I need to make different curries. As soon as my mint plant comes back to life I've gotta make that chutney.

One thing I learned living in India. The further North you go the less hot or spicey the food...the further South the food is HOT!

It is those beautiful spices and breads that makes India's food so memorable. Thanks for taking us along Deana and Phil, looks like you are enjoying yourselves.

Just wanted to mention about the restaurant invoice, cgst and sgst are the central & state taxes respectively for goods & services which is mandatory. The percentage may change depend on categories. However you can always ask to remove service charges if you are not willing to pay, in this way you can save unnecessary costs. These charges are implied by the restaurant just like tips. If you want can tip the waiter directly but not important unlike USA. However enjoy guys, looking forward to see your upcoming videos. - Sailpik

Different kind of food is being taxed differently it depends on the kind of restaurant plus type of food plus the amount of the turnover of the establishment. Takeaway is taxed differently catering is taxed differently. If that establishment has accommodation and you are staying there that has different tax rate if you are visiting just the restaurant part you get taxed different rate. That’s very complicated that’s why the taxes are added at the bottom plus if you run a business every time you pay GST on any service or purchase you can get rebate for that amount when you are filing your GST so having GST mentioned separately makes it easier you don’t have to calculate the GST for state gov and GST for Central gov on every bill you paid. Hope I made is easier to understand I know it’s too complicated which it shouldn’t be. Just for the example if a restaurant also sells alcoholic beverages you pay 18% GST If it just serves food you pay 5% They put service charge at the bottom because the service charge is non taxable and voluntary if they add all that in the cost of the food item it will be charged at 5% or 18% depending on the type of establishment.

Or would they rather determine the tax amount for each item on the menue in advance and just push a button on the POS when a customer requests the receipt? What do you think is more realistic?

The spongy appam and delicate parotta both looked so yummy and like great vehicles for wrapping up tasty stews/curries! I also LOVED the looks of the fried Bombil fish! It looked like it may have had a cornmeal crust! What fun 😋

Goa is heaven you should try Uraak in Goa. It's like a local alcoholic drink which you get from March until May.

Bombay duck is not duck per say. The duck is actually a perversion of the Hindi work daak which means Mail. The fish used to come to Bombay from Kolkata in a train called the Bombay Mail. The abbreviation of the word being Bombil.

The content of last weeks are amazing, you're on fire 🔥 How is India so far? 😁 Love all the veggie options by the way. Also i'm rewatching some of the +- €10 daily eat challenges. Would love to see some more of that kind of videos when you're back in Germany as prices raised much by inflation.

U can refuse to pay service charge and ask restaurant to remove it from bill. The 5% of service tax is mandatory and it goes towards govt tax ( similar to sales tax).

6:07 Reminds me of Injera which is a fermented flatbread made of teff flour and staple in Ethiopia; it is similar in texture to appam of India which is made of fermented rice and coconut milk. Vegetarian dishes in India are flavourful, delicious, as well as nutritious. The really spicy foods are in the southern states Tamilnadu, Andra Pradesh and Telangana.

I've only eaten butter chicken and tikka masala. The dishes you tried look nice. I will have to try it at the Indian restaurant near me.

As you are already paying the service charge gst in the bill. You can ask the restaurant to remove the service charge they charge separately in the bill.

Try Bengali food in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. You will love it. Eat at some good restaurants, like in this video.

This was really interesting, I’ve never been to India and probably will never go as it does not seem to be my cup of tea, but I love seeing it through yalls eyes and getting a sense of it in general. Those restaurant sneaky surcharges though, eeek lol. I don’t like that either and wish the US would hurry up and move away from our old framework of tips as part of employee pay since it’s often unfair and just a lot of time and trouble added to end of meal. This is why I don’t usually eat out 😅.

It’s a very vast country..Majority of the foreigners travel to Delhi,Mumbai,Kolkata,Agra,Kerala etc which are really crowded.. But if you travel to the north(Himachal Pradesh,Uttarakhand,Kashmir) or North East(Arunachal Pradesh,Sikkim,Meghalaya) etc it’s not crowded at all and the scenery is breathtaking Also you can just visit Goa and drink,party and have the time of your life

Hey Phil just to clarify on the ”hidden charges” you mentioned GST - Goods and services tax is charged differently so if you are eating at a Restaurant which only serves food you will only get charged at 5% but if you are visiting a establishment where they serve Alcohol you will be charged 18%. Similarly if you are visiting a place where there is accommodation and if you are living there you will get charged less amt as tax and if you are visiting only the restaurant part you will be charged more tax. Also the tax you paid at the bottom of the bill SGST (state part) and CGST(central gov part ) can be claimed from your income tax with the GSTIN no ( which is mentioned on your bill and unique to that establishment) and copy of bill while filing your taxes. And the part of the service charge that is total voluntary if you do not wish to pay that you can tell the restaurant that you are not paying that amount and that is not added into the food cost because it is non taxable if you add that part in the food cost that will also be taxed.

In india that tax is for GST goods and service tax, the small street food owners do not that GTS BUT at maximum places you have to give. We indian also give that

Guys, service charge is optional. It is declared optional by the government. So you can ask the waiter to not add service charge before bringing the bill. They'll do it happily. Also, tip waiter instead of just filling the pockets of the restaurant owner, cuz they don't pay the poor waiters from their service charge.

You can never try every food that India has to offer as the food culture changes every 20 km that you travel.... Hope you achive your dream 😊

You can visit Kashmir it is the Switzerland of India, with Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Gulmarg is a skii resort and it snows in that part of India. I have a playlist of Mizo songs. Mizo music is like 1970s USA and the Mizos look like Thais.

The food shown is great but you’re in Mumbai, Maharashtra and all you guys ate is South Indian food. Wish you tried more Maharashtra specific foods

at 11.15 - "All I am tasting is mint chutney and it is so good BUT ...." A chutney is a condiment (a substance such as salt, mustard, or pickle that is used to add flavor to food) and there has to be a limit to what you add to the main food item. Looking at how you eat food completely baffles me most of the time. A suggestion - Please watch some food videos of the country/place before your visit and see how others eat it to get an idea.

Paneer is not "cottage cheese" or "tofu" for future reference. They are totally different processes. Yes Paneer has similarities with cottage cheese but is different.

These are not hidden charges on your food bill. The furst is the service charge (you may omit the tip if paying the service charge or refuse the service charge and drop in the tip). The second one is the 2.5% of Centeal Goods and services tax and 2.5% of State Goods and service charge. These are to be paid by all amd mandatorily reflected in the food bill (finally paid to the state amd central govt). No hidden charges in your bill.
