First Time Hunting With My Hawk | Falconry Apprentice

After several months of training I think its finally time to take Carol the Red Tailed Hawk on her first hunting trip with me. The idea is to combines the hawks natural hunting instinct with the falconers training and assistance to create the ultimate hunting experience. Unfortunately we encountered more issues with crows which I think drove the game away. Better luck next time! #falconry #birdsofprey #hunting

Maxx, Both my son, daughter and I have been watching your videos. We started watching because of your endeavor into falconry! I have never watched a KZread channel like yours, but I got to tell you that you produce great content! I really appreciate that you’re genuine and honest. It made a big impact on us when you mentioned that you might’ve been showing off when your bird got out over on the east side. I have nothing but respect for you based on that comment alone. All of my family hunts/wheels and fishes in Washington. It is an integral part of our life. We live an hour or so north, let me know if you ever need a couple of partners to go wheeling with or do something in the outdoors. -Matt

Hi Maxx! Great video of your hunting outing. You'll learn more every time. I suggest trying to find some local rabbit hunters who have access to some good rabbit hunting habitat out of town. They also will probably have permission to hunt the properties and can assist in flushing out the bunnies. Most will also have good rabbit hunting dogs (usually beagles) that can jump the rabbits and get them moving so that Carol can see them. However, I'm not sure how Carol would react to the dogs, especially if she happened to kill a rabbit in front of the dogs. This is a cool series! Hope that you'll post more of your new hunting adventures w the hawk!!

I have hawks and owls in my backyard. There is a long tree line but not that thick but there are so many squirrels and other things that those birds eat every day. It's so strange to hear them and you know when they get a kill and what they got just by the noise the animal makes. Yes, that sounds terrible but it makes me happy because we need those bird's if prey. We need them healthy as well. It's also nice to see under a full moon because then you can see the owl in the moonlight flying to get their meal.

Awesome !! I came here just for the falconry !! Good idea, on how you kept Carol watching the main trail and you right in the woods scaring whatever to the trail that Carol was watching !! Maybe trap or buy rats, and keep them on the leash making them go in and out of the trail for Carol to see and attack !! Have you doing the same thing scaring out the leashed rat to the trail ! Or build like a fenced in area, where you can let the prey go without worrying that the prey gets away !! Just some suggestions !! Keep it up 👍🏽

I haven't watched all of your videos, but I work on golf course maintenance and I might suggest asking your local golf course superintendent if they would be open to you hunting on the course. You would have an endless supply of game if the course has a geese problem as they are a big nuisance for maintenance and of course plenty of rabbits. Some clubhouses even hire falconers to keep birds from nesting, appreciate you the videos.

Try an industrial park. In between the factories there are usually sections of a few acres that are scrubby woodlots. They're typically packed with rabbits that come out and feed on the lawns around the factories/offices. Go and beat the bushes hard. Not sure how your trespassing laws work, but here, for a place like that, as long as it doesn't have No Trespassing signs or fences, you would be good. The people working there might be curious, but they pretty much always think it's cool and just want to watch.

I know absolutely nothing about falconry, but I would remove the loud bells from Carol. Any noise like that will cause squirrels to go into a hole in a tree and not come out till you are long gone. Plus the crows already alerted everything around that there is a predator in the woods.
