Petty's music is great but what I love about the guy is he had brass balls. When his record company insisted he give up publishing rights fora a contract he said he'd sell oranges on the street first. They finally caved. Another time he snatched his masters and moved them from studio to studio to keep the company from getting them.

Here is the story. Toms first two albums were successful and he wasn’t making any money. Tom had signed a bad contract The label was making all the money. A bigger label came in and bought the label the first two albums were released on. Tom wanted to re-do his contract with the new label because “I didn’t sign a contract with you. I signed one for them so we need a new deal.” The new label said no. So Tom financed his third album on his own. No help from the new label. Tom paid for it all out of pocket. It cost him nearly $500,000 to record. He finished the album. Refused to release it and then filed for bankruptcy. The new label had to let him out of the contract as a result of his bankruptcy. He signs a new deal and the rest is history. That’s why TP has brass balls!

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were formed in 1976 & had a lot of great hits such as "American Girl", "Refugee", "The Waiting", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know" etc. In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Free Fallin'", "A Face In The Crowd" etc. He was also part of the supergroup "Travelling Willburys" in 1988.

Tom Petty doesn't write songs composed like Led Zeppelin or Rush etc but the guy just produces hit after hit after hit after hit. Back when MTV was in it's hey day all the way up to his untimely passing. His band the Heartbreakers were super tight - some of his newer stuff is some of his best (although his whole discography is great) "I should have known it" & "Saving Grace" are perfect examples of his continued excellence.

Shen she comes to visit we can spend hours listening to these old tunes. She lives in CA and works on a yacht named LA Woman named after the Door’s song of the same name. Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty were sitting in Petty's backyard. Just chilling and noodling on their guitars. Lynne asked Petty if he was working on anything. Tom answered, "I got this one riff I've been playing with" and played the riff. Lynne liked it and asked if he had any lyrics in mind for it. So Petty played the riff and off the top of his head sang "She's a good girl" (riff) "Loves her Mama" (riff) "Loves Jesus" (riff), "And America too" (riff). OFF THE TOP OF HIS HEAD!!! I heard about it during an interview Jeff Lynne did.

It wasn't a Tom Petty song; but several years ago, he, ELO's Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Prince, and a few others did an out of this world live performance in tribute to George Harrison, which you need to check out. Their performance of Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was out of this world! Prince, who people tend to forget was a guitar-monster, really showed-out on the solo. Harrison's son got to play rythm with those legends on stage, too. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. Sad to think both Prince and Petty are gone, now....but that time they teamed up on stage was one for the books.

This is my favorite Tom Petty song. I like it because to me it’s about growth, but there’s a tension and melancholy to it that feels on. The video to me nails it. You kind of wind up where you are; you’re learning to fly, but you’re not choosing where you’re going. You’re flying from one experience to the next. Thanks, Polo! Imo the best Petty song to start out with to really understand why people love him and what underscores his other music is Refugee.

The live anthology version of this song is fire. Also runnin down a dream is one of my favorites.
