@@wgdavis5353 Michelle had two daughers, Mackenzie and Chyna. Mackenzie became an actress on a hit TV show, she wrote a famous book where she said she had an incestuous relationship with her father John Phillips, the leader of the Mamas and the Papas. He was already dead at the time. Her other daughter Chyna Phillips formed Wilson Phillips with Brian Wilson's daughters, and they had several hits.

As a child I fell in love with Mama Cass Elliot (the big girl) because I saw her on Scooby Doo. Absolutely head over heels in love. I started listening to her solo stuff as well as the Mamas and the Papas. I was devastated when I learned that she passed away when I was just a baby. I still love Cassy. She was my first boyhood crush.

One of the best folk/pop groups of all time. Cass Elliot (the bigger girl) had one of the most distinctive and beautiful female voices in the history of music, and a wonderful stage presence and sense of humor. John Phillips (guitar) was one of the all-time great songwriters, but a troubled soul. He and Michelle Phillips (blonde) were married when the band started, but divorced during their run (she had a brief affair with the lead vocalist Denny Doherty, who Cass was actually in love with...this band had a LOT of drama during their brief time together). Sadly, Michelle is the only member who is still with us. The group was only together for a few years, but had MANY huge hits. While California Dreamin' was their signature song, their biggest hit was Monday Monday, and I highly suggest checking that one out too.

The flute was used in mid 60s music quite a bit. (if I remember correctly the band Traffic had a flute player. I think his name was Chris Wood) Flutes were used primarily in folk and folk rock music and then Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull expanded it to become a lead instrument in more aggressive styles of songs. For a time a baroque style of music was popular and it featured the flute with the best known example most likely being "Walk Away Renee" by the Left Banke. Beatles producer George Martin introduced classical music instruments into rock as more than just background filler with songs like Eleanor Rigby and over time it eventually led to bands like Renaissance which was a full mixture of classical music and rock. There was much more room for experimenting in the 1960s so don't be too surprised by anything that you hear.

I havve heard flutes used in many different genres of music, rock, jazz, afro-cuban, etcetera. There is a unique dimension that the flute adds because, while it is a delicate instrument, its sound can be quite piercing, and it resonates very deeply in the human soul.

Others to consider, Jayy: "Monday, Monday" (1966) (their only number one hit), "I Saw Her Again" (1966), "Words Of Love" (1966), "Dedicated To The One I Love" (1967) (not better than The Shirelles version, but still pretty good), "Creeque Alley" (1967), "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon)" (1967) (recently used in "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood") and especially "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" (1968), I think you will really love that one! The backing instrumentation was performed by Los Angeles based "Wrecking Crew" who were made up of some of the best session musicians such as Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, Hal Blaine and especially Carol Kaye (one of the few females to play in the Crew, who provided some of the most recognizable bass lines in pop music history), and a LOT more. The ever-changing lineup that played on hundreds of Top 40 hits during the late 50s to the mid-70s not only performed music for The Mamas & The Papas, but also for artists such as The Beach Boys, The Righteous Brothers, The Monkees, Neil Diamond, and a LOT more. If you are interested in knowing more about these fantastic musicians, there is a great 2008 documentary about them simply called "The Wrecking Crew".

My mother had their 2nd album with Monday, Monday and I Call Your Name. I listened to it all the time as a little girl and as a 47 year old woman, I still never get tired of listening. I Call Your Name and Straight Shooter are 2 of my favorites.

That was, indeed, a flute. That was a flute's lower register.

Specifically an alto flute, which has a lower register in general compared to a standard concert flute in C.

I like the line "if I was in LA" and wish I was.....oh wait I am !!!!! It's too bad that the tall guy "papa" John Phillips didn't like Mama Cass because of her size. She was a great singer RIP

Mama Cass, the larger female singer, has a song, “Dream a little dream” that is breathtaking.

Yes, that was a flute. The instrument you may thinking of is the piccolo; it’s a miniature version of a flute that plays higher notes.

In the late 60s and 70s; hi-fi sound was pretty new; so a lot of producers used the separation of the left and right channels (and eventuall front and back in quadraphonic sound) as a novel effect
