Back in 1979 you could not escape this song. It was everywhere all the time. Me and a buddy were driving from Missouri to West Virginia for a Christmas visit with family and I swear it was played every third song on the radio.

The Knack is considered by many to be a One-Hit Wonder with My Sharona being the only song of theirs with any staying power. The song is a little naughty because we have a man having feelings for a younger girl, but in the real world he waited for her to be legal before he made any moves and they ended up being together for years. I first heard this when I was 18 and serving my country and it was All Over The Place! You may want to listen to Weird Al's parody of this song "My Bologna." It is absolutely hilarious, just like so many of Weird Al's parodies.

A Sharona is a 17 year old girl that he had a thing for. I do believe they hooked up when she became legal. Not sure how much older he was than her when they met. Also, this darn official video cuts one of the most iconic and amazing guitar solos in rock. Who makes an official video that cuts the best part?? I dunno, but you need to check out the album version to get the whole solo. It's fire.

I agree with you on the butchered solo. that because someone decided to butcher it so the song would fit in a 45 vinyl record back in the days. most cases single edits are an abomination because they cut off the best parts of the song for time and space.

The entire album is fantastic. "Let Me Out" "Number or your Name"....awesome.

I know some has already posted about the lead guitar break but just to add The Knack had two versions to this song . The short lead version they play on the radio and the extended lead guitar version on the album and what a difference it makes to this song . This is the short version. They also had R rated lyrics on the original release that had to be changed for radio air play…again what a difference it makes when he sings the real original lyrics…They were a great band and I was lucky enough to see them in 1979 and many times after that until Doug Fieger passed away, ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼

I find single edits a joke in most cases. however, I hardly noticed any lyric change in the single version. I have seen some lyrics altered in some classic song like Jet Airliner by steve miller and who are you by the who of course they cut the F-bombs on the single version which is fine.

If you listen closely to the lyrics Sharona was a girl he had the hots for and she was a minor meaning she was under 18. He's wanting to know when she is going to give it up for him. As a few people have sort of touched on, Sharona was a girl in his high school who was a freshman when he was a senior. He had the hots for her but he knew she was way too young for him so he did his best to refrain himself from pursuing her. A few years later, after they had started the band they were hired by the school to play at the school prom and Sharona was actually a senior that year and was getting ready to turn 18. The lead singer of The Knack specifically wrote this song about her so he can sing it at the school to her. If you go find the album cover, which is probably not truly appropriate for your channel (it's a little risque), that is actually Sharona on the cover of the album.

The beat is fabulous but lots of sexual innuendos.

I disliked this song when it came out, and it was played too often. I appreciate it now, though, mainly because of the guitar solo... and yes, the uncut version is better because of the extended solo. The solo gives the song more balance -- the hard, driving beat of the main theme versus the flow of virtuosic guitar solo. The knack had a knack. LOL.
