In 2015, David Paich said " Africa" is about a man's love of the continent of Africa, rather than a personal romance.David also said it was like God giving him the music and lyrics because he said he wasn't that smart. Jeff Porcaro, Toto's famous drummer also is credited with the writing of " Africa." I'm GEN X, 1965 and a TOTO FAN since 1978! I just saw " Toto & Journey" together in concert March 19, 2022 Simmons Bank Arena North Little Rock , Arkansas. My dream come true to see them together after 44+years. Toto has always had the most INCREDIBLE MUSICIANS: David Paich, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Porcaro, Mike Porcaro, Bobby Kimball, Lenny Castro, David Hungate And the amazing Joseph Williams lead vocals after Bobby in and out of the band. All these guys were SESSION MUSICIANS IN LA long before TOTO was formed. They have all played on numerous 70s and 80s songs and albums and decided to form their own band. After the tragedy and loss of Jeff Porcaro in August, 1992 ....the band was faced with moving forward without their fearless drummer and leader. Enter Simon Phillips in 1992. Thank you " Toto" for staying on the yellow brick road."

Africa is stunning and brutal at the safe time. It has amazing places and people, it is a contradiction of rich and poor, peace and war, but the land scapes and places are all special. There are so many good hearted people out here ......

You’re right on the money with this interpretation. The song is basically telling those who only read and don’t experience to experience while it’s waiting there for you! Once you do you’ll understand what teachings could never substitute! Many think it’s a personal romance, when in reality it’s a message to go travel and live and learn about world while we still have its riches. Many thanks for your reaction 😊

I was in high school in 1982 when this album was released. The opening drum shuffle groove of Rosanna grabbed my attention, and by the end of the song I was a fan. Make Believe and Africa solidified my Fandom, but then I Won't Hold You Back stole my soul. It was written and sung by their awesome but wild guitarist, Steve Lukather. Give it a go too. No official video, so do the studio audio. There are great live versions, but you need to know the studio version first.

You have to do "Rosanna" to complete the trifecta of Toto's biggest hits. After that, if you want more, you can go slow with ballads like "I Won't Hold You Back" or "I'll Be Over You". If you want to go hard in the other direction, do "Animal" or "Pamela". P.S. Your kitty is adorable. :)😹

Regarding the lyrics, per Wiki: In 2015, Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do." Jeff Porcaro elaborates further, explaining: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."

He wasn't researching Africa. He was trying to find the book that corner of a page he was holding was torn out of so he could see the whole map. Maybe it led to a treasure or something. Too bad the book he was looking for was the one the oil lamp set on fire after the stack of books fell over.

Devin, as always love your reaction vids! I think you are a lot like me in your taste of music. I don't think you care what genre it's from as long as it's good music. And if it tells a story people can relate to, then even better. I would like you to check out a couple of songs in the country genre that I think you would really like. These two songs are from the group called Sawyer Brown. The first song I think you should listen to is "800 Pound Jesus". It's about a statue of Jesus that a man purchases at a garage sale. The statue ends up saving his life and giving him even greater appreciation of Jesus. If this song isn't right up your alley, then I don't really know what would be. The second song I would like you check out is "Treat Her Right". Basically a love song about how and why you should treat your woman right. Again, if this isn't up your alley, then I have read you wrong. And I don't think that is the case. Whenever you get around to it is fine. I'm sure you have a long list of requests to get through. If nothing else, have a listen to these songs on your own time and just let me know what you think. I will still be an avid follower no matter what. Thanks for considering my request. Tim Sparks

Nice reaction, but please, buy something to cut this horrible barb... Most of men critise woman as objects to be perfect, but this barb is horrible, cut it before becoming the monster you deserve to be treated !!! As long as I will hear horrible things against women, I will ask the same for men.... I think it's just fair and this barb is horrible! By the way, the song is very nice, as usual, but we all know that, no surprise!
