S Nation, if you haven't already, will you PLEASE react to the Dells' live performance of "Stay in My Corner"? It's in black & white and was recorded in 1972. Thanks!

100%...David Ruffin called Junior "Old Iron Throat". Teddy Pendergrass called him 'Dad'. That man set the standard for baritones!!

Oh what a very dope nightly reaction 🌃! Oh What A Night was originally released as the second single from The Dells' 1956 album: Oh What A Nite. The song was released again as the second single from The Dells' 1969 album: Love Is Blue. It was written by Marvin Junior and Johnny Funches. It was produced by Bobby Miller. The song reached #4 on the R&B chart in 1956. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #10 on the Pop chart in 1969. The 1969 song version was ranked #260 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was said to have been inspired by a party, which had been held in The Dells' honor by some female friends of the group. It became a romantic standard and Doo-Wop classic. The 1969 song version added a spoken intro, voiced by bass singer Chuck Barksdale, who didn't feature on the original version: Do you recall the night? That very, very special night Do you remember a girl? A very special girl Well to the old and to the new We rededicate this song to you The song has been used in some television shows including 📺: The Sopranos (2002) and Flying Blind (1989). The song has been used in some films including 📽: Dinner Rush (2000), Oh What A Night (1992) and The Five Heartbeats (1991). The song has been covered by some artists including 📻📽: Sly Stone & The Biscaynes (1978), Tracey Ullman (1983), Lester Bowie (1986), The Moonlighters (1988), Nick Kamen (1988), Barbara Jones (1995), Donnie & The Del Chords (1999), Unisoghn (2001) and more. Song Credits 📝: 1. 1956 Version Lead vocals by Johnny Funches and Marvin Junior Background vocals by Johnny Funches, Marvin Junior, Michael McGill, Chuck Barksdale and Verne Allison 2. 1969 Version Lead vocals by Marvin Junior and Johnny Carter Background vocals by Johnny Carter, Michael McGill, Chuck Barksdale and Verne Allison Spoken intro by Chuck Barksdale The Dells Info 📰: The Dells were a R&B vocal group from Harvey, Illinois. The original group members all attended Thornton Township High School together. The original group lineup featured lead baritone Marvin Junior, lead tenor Johnny Funches, tenors Verne Allison and Lucius McGill, second baritone Mickey McGill and bass Chuck Barksdale. Initially called The El-Rays, the group recorded their first single: "Darling I Know", for Chess Records subsidiary Checker Records in 1954. The single didn't chart. Lucius McGill departed the group not long after, and wasn't replaced, cutting the group down to a quintet. Newly christened The Dells, they got another shot in 1955 when they signed to Vee Jay Records. Their third single for the record label: "Oh What A Nite" (co-written by Johnny Funches), peaked at # 4 on the R&B charts in late 1956. Thus established, the group hit the road and appeared at New York's Apollo Theatre. Though they continued to put forth quality singles, there were no more further music chart hits for a few years. Tragedy nearly struck the group in 1958, on their way to a gig in Philadelphia, the group was in a serious car accident which lacerated Marvin Junior's larynx (slightly altering his voice thereafter) and nearly cost Michael McGill the use of his leg. The accident took its toll and the group did not perform for almost two years after that. When they decided to reform the group again in 1960, Johnny Funches, under his wife's mandate, would not be a part of the group. Johnny Funches was replaced in the group with Johnny Carter. This group lineup remained together until Johnny Carter's passing in 2009. In 1966, they were hired to open for Ray Charles, only to be fired after a performance resulted in several standing ovations. The group would also sing background for Barbara Lewis, mainly on Lewis' 1963 hit song: "Hello Stranger", while also working with Quincy Jones, who helped to fine-tune their vocals for music industry Standards and Jazz material. Also, in 1966, The Dells returned to Chess Records under the record label's Cadet Records subsidiary working with Bobby Miller and future Earth Wind & Fire arranger Charles Stepney. In 1968, The Dells issued the album: There Is, which included their first R&B charting song in two years with the album's title track: "There Is" (#11 R&B/#20 Pop), which showcased the sharp baritone of Marvin Junior and the harmonies with the four other Dells. The song was also their first top 20 Pop chart hit. The group's single: "Stay In My Corner", would reach #1 on the R&B chart and #10 on the Pop chart in 1968. Subsequent R&B hits included the singles: "Wear It On Our Face" (#27 R&B/#44 Pop), "Always Together" (#3 R&B/#18 Pop), "I Can Sing A Rainbow / Love is Blue (#5 R&B/#22 Pop/#15 UK)". In the following year, 1969, The Dells' soulful remake of their debut hit song: "Oh What A Night", gave the group their second chart-topping R&B single and also reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100. For a second time, the song sold over a million copies. Subsequent hits included the songs: "Open Up My Heart" (#5 R&B/#51 Pop), "Oh What A Day" (#10 R&B/#43 Pop), and "On The Dock Of The Bay" (#13 R&B/#43 Pop). In 1971, The Dells' single: "The Love We Had Stays On My Mind" (#8 R&B/#30 Pop), became another high charting song for the group. By this time Charles Stepney had taken over production duties from Bobby Miller. The Dells' 1973 song: "Give Your Baby A Standing Ovation" (#3 R&B/#34 Pop), was their third certified Gold single selling over one million copies. The Dell's left Cadet Records around the end of 1974 with the parent company in financial difficulties, the group would continue recording albums under the Mercury, ABC, and Virgin record labels finding some more charting songs includingthe 1980 single: "I Touched A Dream" (#17 R&B), which returned the group to the top 40 on the R&B chart. The Dells were confined mostly to the nostalgia music market afterwards until they were asked to be creative consultants to Robert Townsend's acclaimed 1991 film: The Five Heartbeats, which was loosely based on the lives of The Dells and other groups of its era. The real stuff in the film about the music industry came from them and Chuck Barksdale shared with me so honestly, the good, the bad and the ugly of the music business”, Robert Townsend said. The group recorded a new song titled: "A Heart Is A House For Love", for the film. The song reached #13 on the Billboard R&B chart, making them only one of two groups to have hit singles in five decades. The following year, after signing with PIR Records they released the album: I Salute You. The Dells continued performing live on stage and recording new music sporadically in the early years of the new millennium. In 2004, The Dells were inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The group performed until illness forced longtime lead singer Marvin Junior and bass vocalist Chuck Barksdale into retirement, ending the group's 60-year run in the music industry in 2012.
