Another masterpiece from Paul McCartney. Written about his deceased mother after he dreamed of her reassuring him during a difficult time. It can be interpreted and applied many ways. Bottom line is that it’s a beautiful song. Beatles music will almost always lift you up. Great reaction. 🌺✌️

Not really. He had a dream in which their assistant Mal said let it be. He obviously changed this to Mother Mary in the song, which also refers to the mother of Jesus. Paul sometimes changes stories over time, and now he says his mother was the one in the dream.

"I've never heard a bad song by the Beatles." Like all artists there are some that don't work quite as well as others, but those are kinda rate in their catalog. It can't be said enough that the entire catalog was written, recorded, and released over a period of 8 years. Try to imaging any modern artist create this much high quality material from, say, 2014 through today.

She died of breast cancer when he was fourteen years old and John lost his mother Julia eighteen months later to an off-duty drunk driving cop who hit her as she was crossing the road after visiting here sister (John's Aunt Mimi) who raised him. "That became a very big bond between John and me, because he lost his mum early on, too. We both had this emotional turmoil which we had to deal with and, being teenagers, we had to deal with it very quickly. We both understood that something had happened that you couldn’t talk about - but we could laugh about it, because each of us had gone through it. It wasn’t OK for anyone else. We could both laugh at death - but only on the surface. John went through hell, but young people don’t show grief - they’d rather not. Occasionally, once or twice in later years, it would hit in. We’d be sitting around and we’d have a cry together; not often, but it was good."

According to McCartney, this is a very positive song, owing to its inspiration. One night when he was paranoid and anxious, he had a dream where he saw his mother, who had been dead for ten years or so - she came to him in his time of trouble, speaking words of wisdom that brought him much peace when he needed it. It was this sweet dream that got him to begin writing the song

I love this song. I had never heard it before, but in 2017, I spent some time in the psych ward of the hospital (nervous breakdown--everybody kept dying on me), and I can absolutely say, you will find some of the most creative people in the psych ward. My first roommate in there was a truly gorgeous young bipolar woman who was an amazing cello player. Anyway, another guy played guitar, and one night, he played this and a bunch of the patients started singing the song, and it was just so beautiful. I guess we were "the brokenhearted people." Honestly, it really was a special moment.

A Boomer's memory. I found out that the Beatles were breaking up. Like everyone else in my generation this was like the Titanic of rock groups sinking beneath the icy waters of the dark ocean of hopelessness. No!Why! But yes, it was true. Then, something happened that had never happened before. News came on that they were going to play a last song live, on TV, in the middle of the afternoon when we had all gone home from school. When I heard this, my best friend told me to come over to his house (a 10 minute walk from mine) to watch it together. We did. After listening to it Jon (not John) asked me if I liked it. I said, no. I then asked him if he did. He said yes, enthusiastically. I was puzzled but said nothing. Later, I went over it in my mind and still felt the same way. It was because it seemed very sad as the last song I would ever hear from the group that, to me and my generation, was beyond reach as the greatest ever. The next day, and for years of days after, it played over and over endlessly on the radio. Having begun to recover from my sorrow, I started to see that Let It Be was ( and to this day is) one of the greatest songs of all time. Now, 52 years on, it is still one of the very few to make it to the top of music's Mount Everest of eternal music masterpieces! As for the sadness, it is still there, but overshadowing it is...hope! For me, hope's name...is Jesus! God bless you all!! 🙏

A song about his mother, but with spiritual overtones. That's why he says "Mother Mary", instead of the normal way of referencing one's mother (i.e. "my mother, Mary", or "Mary, my mother"). Great song choice!

My favorite George Harrison solo. He recorded this solo in Jan 1970 while putting together his song, 'I Me Mine', with Paul and Ringo. It would be the last time they were ever together as Beatles in the studio. Billy Preston guests on organ for the church feel. He was a great addition to their group when they tried to record a Get Back album and movie. Billy Preston plays the Fender Rhodes keyboard with them on their famous Rooftop performance.

Yes, an inspirational song indeed. "mother Mary" was a referenced to his real mother. He had a dream about her coming to him telling everything will work out. Let It Be. She passed a way when he was a young teenager, I believe about 14 years old or 15. A lot of people took "Mother Mary" to be "Jesus'" mother. LOL It is understandable. I am Catholic and we pray to Blessed Mother "Mary" and saints etc.

@@sarahfullerton6894 Paul was not religious. He is more ambivalent about it now but certainly at this time he felt a lot of anger towards god and the church because of his mums death. His mum had a deep Catholic faith and Paul prayed for her to be spared as he said "thats how stupid religion is, my prayers didn't work when I needed them to" so Mother Mary is most definitely not a refrence to Mary "mother of god" but his own mum Mary who was a nurse and a nurturer. The phrasing is "mother mary" because it scans musically.

One of the all time greats. In 1999, Rolling Stone magazine published it's Top 100, presumably because of the millennium of those 100 songs, TEN were by The Beatles, with this song at #20. The list was revised in 2021 to include more contempory bands but The Beatles were still there with their solid 10. They'd moved up and down a bit but that shows just how big and influential they were.

Great iconic song by the most iconic band in history. When The Beatles were about to record their album "Let It Be" in January, 1969 Paul was very stressed about the cracks that were forming in the band. He was beginning too see the end and was very concerned about it all. One night in his dreams his beloved mother, Mary came to him in a dream and told him to just let it be, you can't control everything, what will be, will be. I think this experience gave him some comfort. George Harrison kills the guitar solo on this one, his guitar is almost speaking. I hope you two continue your Beatles journey as you two have no clue about the catalog of music these guys released between 1963 to 69.They covered just about every genre of popular and rewrote or should I say wrote the book on how to make studio recordings starting in late 1966 or even mid 66 with Lennon's "Tomorrow Never Knows" from their "Revolver" Lp. These four guys along with Bob Dylan were and still are one offs. I feel very safe in saying that you will never see the likes of these people in your lifetime and beyond your lives. You know I'm gonna bring up George's "Here Comes The Sun" from their "Abbey Road" 2019 50th anniversary remix with video, sounds incredible ! Also Their 1968 video of Lennon's "Revolution" great color and sound. In this one you'll see how The Beatles could rock out with the best of them. Never try to put them in a box and say they were this or that. They truly did it all. Rocker's, pop, greatest ballad writers ever, greatest LSD music ever, Listen to their "Rubber Soul" Lp, the greatest pot record ever and that was back in 65, Rockabilly, orchestra music. Like I said, they did it all. The proper way to listen to them is chronologically from 63 to 69. Some will say 70 when the "Let It Be" Lp was released but that was recorded in January, 1969 and sat on a shelf for a year. "Abbey Road" recorded in the summer of of 69 and released in September of 69.This was actually their last album. Listen chronologically and hear the growth of this band in 7 short years. Like I said, you will never see another Beatles. Lennon/McCartney will never happen for many many years into the future. These two were songwriting geniuses. Lennon's brain and his view of the world around him was very unique. One of a kinder with this guy. Hey Asia, more George Carlin in the future please. This guy was The Beatles and Dylan of comedy ! 👌👌👌☮️✌️💕🙂

Mother Mary was actually Paul's mum he is referring to, she passed when Paul 14 also. All of the Beatles I feel are and were spiritual men. On the instrumentation, I think Ringo deserves all of his accolades, the way he drove that band, cannot be understated

Hard to believe how blessed I was to see the Beatles at Olympia Stadium in Detroit in 1966. The openers were The Cyrkle (Red Rubber Ball, Turn Down Day), The Ronettes, The Remains(Don't look back), and Bobby Hebb (Sunny). I remember the Beatles actually took a chartered bus right after to play at their next concert. I also remember it was next to impossible to hear them due to all the screaming girls. I saved my allowance a long time waiting for that concert. I still was short and my mom gave me $1 to take for spending money. It cost $5.50 for my ticket. Amazing. WKNR Radio hosted it and promoted a lot of it. WKNR in Detroit is where the rumor that Paul had died began. Another fun fact. The Beatles only played 11 songs set that day with 2 shows the same day. Sometimes being old has lots of memories that younger people can appreciate.

I was too young to know them as the lads from Liverpool although I do remember hearing 'A Hard Days Night' playing from a radio when I was 4 years old.
