I always feel like that reaction to 'would you tell me to go straight to hell' is her realizing she totally said 'a bad word' in her old childhood stomping grounds :D Especially since, as I'd forgotten, the real lyrics are 'would you tell me to go fuck myself' so she is grinning to the people who know better, too! (there is a performance of Taylor and Stevie but Taylor's in-ears are clearly not working and she sounds terrible, don't listen to it, haha)

If you find her versatile, I would say you don't know half of it! I describe myself as a recently converted Swifty. I was always a casual fan. But in the wake of the Eras tour, and the re-recording of her first six albums, I find myself falling in a deep rabbit hole where I watch or listen to everything I can get my hands on. And found myself really enjoying her old country records (Debut album, Fearless, and especially Speak Now). Her storytelling has always been on full display, even from the young age of fifteen, when she published her debut album. She has a staggering amount of musical talent, and you can tell she was born to perform on stage. My suggestion for you is to react to "Sparks Fly" and "Last Kiss" from Speak Now live, videos for "Picture to Burn" and "Teardrops on my Guitar", and "Our Song".

Betty is sung from the perspective of James, who is part of a teenage love triangle involving Betty and an unnamed third girl who people generally refer to as August or Augustine, based on the title of her song (august). Cardigan is the third in the trilogy which is from Betty's perspective many years later. All three are on the folklore album. Anyway, James is trying to get Betty to take him back, after cheating on her with Augustine, or something along those lines. Also, worth noting that the original lyric is "would you tell me to go f$%@ myself," not "would you tell me to go straight to hell." Had to be cleaned up for the TV broadcast... Betty is my cat's name, so I have a special love for this one :)

They have a 4th child that they haven’t revealed its gender or name, maybe Taylor will reveal that in her new album & get a tradition going. Love the reaction! There are lyrical parallels throughout all 3 songs. TS is such a genius that times in which she says certain lines within the songs also correlate. Betty is the song that's in the moment and is the reference point for Cardigan and August. For ex. in Cardigan the line "And you'd be standing in my front porch light" is sung at 3:14 on the track which directly parallels the line "Betty, I'm here on your doorstep" which she sings at 3:14 on Betty. And on August the line, the 1st time she says it, "And said 'get in the car'" is sung at 2:46 which reflects the line "She said 'James, get in, let's drive'" in Betty which is also at 2:46. This is one of the many reasons why I believe she's one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan thanks to my granddaughter…she tuned me into a Swiftie when I took her ,at 13, to see her first concert, Taylor Swift´s 1989 tour. This year I turned her into a fan of P!nk when I took her to see her at MSG in New York. If you want an amazing video, check out her performance of Glitter in the Air from the 2010 Grammy awards and then take a gander at any of her live performances, the Trustfall video and the duet she does with her father.

Taylor started out country her second album Fearless wins a Grammy for album of the year. She makes four country albums. She switches genres and goes pop with 1989 and wins a Grammy for allbum of the year. She then makes two more pop albums, and then again switches genres and makes a folk album with Folklore and wins a Grammy for album of the year. She makes another folk album with Evermore and then switches genres again and goes back to pop with Midnights, and if she wins a Grammy for album of the year for Midnights, it will be so amazing!!!

I am truly enjoying your reactions to Taylor Swift's music. I would love to see you react to some of her earlier work. I'm thinking, Picture to Burn, from her debut album. The video shows how she came on the scene when she was so young and so steeped in country music. I think it provides an interesting insight as you see her grow up and grow as a singer-songwriter, performer, and master storyteller. I'm sure you would also enjoy her live performance of Mean at the Grammys. It's a later work with her playing the banjo--still very country and completely Taylor.

Or to the rest of the folklore love triangle that the comments talk about which is August (which you could react her this live from the eras tour) and Cardigan (maybe to the music video.). Or also would love to see you react to something from the eras tour movie.

This song is connected to two other songs from the album folklore: So basically this song " Betty" is from James perspective, the song "cardigan" is from Betty's perspective! While the song "August" is from the perspective of the girl who James spent the summer with. I hope you react to these two other songs, so you could connect the dots.

Haha, just like everyone says it’s part of a trilogy. At the end, he (James) misses Betty standing in her cardigan (song #1 from Betty’s perspective), kissing in your car again, standing in the streetlight (lyrical imagery from Betty’s perspective sing Cardigan), you know j oh w I miss you. I agree, her smiles on this performance is charming. Her goo-goo eyes with the camera makes it.

OMG here we go. It's the Taylor Swift patented slippery slide down the rabbit hole! Betty + August +Cardigan are a set of song that all tell a story about Betty, James and Augustine - the three teenagers in an imaginary love triangle that Taylor masterfully tells a magical story about. We need you to react to all three together. Then the cardigan, the car and the stop light will all make sense, and we need to see that happen for you on video. Get on it!!!! Please.

In addition to the lyical parallels throughout all 3 songs, Taylor is such a genius that the times in which she says certain lines within the songs also line up. Betty is the song that is in the moment and is the frame of reference for cardigan and august. For example, in cardigan the line "And you'd be standing in my front porch light" is sung at 3:14 on the track which directly parallels the line "Betty, I'm here on your doorstep" which she sings at 3:14 on betty. And on august the line (the first time she says it because she says this particular line multiple times in august) "And said "Get in the car'' is sung at 2:46 which reflects the line "She said "James, get in, let's drive"" in betty which is also sung at 2:46. This is why I think she's one of the best songwriters of all time. (Saw this explanation and had to copy and share) Also to add; the folklore songs August, Betty and cardigan being from 3 characters perspectives, I must add: in the folklore studio sessions Taylor said she feels Betty and James got back together in the end despite what happened so at least there’s a happy ending. Also: day 300 of requesting haunted from the speak now tour lmao

Just to echo what everybody has said, the smile is because of the lyric change because she knows everyone was listening to see if she changed the lyric. Also, you really have to listen to all the songs to fully understand the triangle and how all the songs fit together. Finally, I agree you need to react to the Grammy performance of Mean. It was written in response to a critic who blasted her prior Grammy performance and was on Speak Now which is an album where she wrote all of the songs herself because people were criticizing her for not writing her own songs. If you love country music you will love this song and thus performance in particular was what really made me a fan.

If you want to hear an INCREDIBLE acoustic session, with some of her best vocals and guitar playing I’ve ever heard, react to Cornelia Street live from Paris. The show she did was actually called Lover In Paris if that makes it easier to find. That and Death By A Thousand Cuts from her Tiny Desk performance. But I’m telling you, the “squeak” that kills you, she does often in Cornelia Street. You would absolutely fall in love with it.

The smile you saw her get was definitely because she had to switch the lyrics to make it appropriate for the CMAs. “Would you tell me to go f*ck myself?” to “Would you tell me to go straight to hell?” I’m pretty sure there were people in the audience singing the actual lyrics and it made her almost chuckle. Plus, Taylor performing at the CMAs was probably like going home for her because it’s where she started. I’ve seen people in the comments here mention the other two songs that go along with this one so have a listen to those as well.

Here to add a little context to this performance. This was October of 2020 and one of the first, maybe THE first, award shows to happen after the start of Covid. Taylor is alone on stage because of social distancing. I assume she is also in very minimal make up for the same reason. Also, notice how there are no crowns shots - I don’t think there was a live audience for this. I get choked up watching this performance because it felt like maybe a return to normalcy after such a long period of not know if we would ever have something like this again. (This is also about a month and a half before she releases Evermore, her second surprise album of 2020 🤯)
