Geddy Lee sings, plays bass and keyboards ( sometimes all at the same time using foot pedals) YYZ pronounced YYZED in Canada is the indicator code for the Toronto International Airport. The beginning of the song is Morse Code for YYZ. Alex Lifeson the guitarist is also a licensed pilot and was flying them back to Toronto when Geddy and Neil heard the indicator code come on and it stuck with them. When the guys saw YYZ on their luggage they were happy as it meant they were heading home to their families. Rush has done a number of instrumentals. Their opus is La Villa Strangiato. I would suggest watching the official music video. YYZ was on the album Moving Pictures and all the characters in this video were based on the pictures on the album cover. Cheers

YYZ is the airport code for Toronto, their home town. The guitar player, Alex, is also a pilot, and would sometimes fly all three of them. When getting close to home, they would hear the Morse code for YYZ come over the radio. Neil, being the consummate percussionist, turned the Morse code into the opening rhythm of the song. The very beginning part Neil plays on the crotales (small cymbals) and then played by the guitar and bass, is YYZ in Morse code! The song is supposed to evoke the frantic pace of traveling and living life on the road. The slow half-time part in the middle is when you make it home, have some time to relax with family for a bit, and then, bam! off again. Rush did a number of instrumentals that showcase their talents. Give La Villa Strangiato a try.
