You have to remember this song was written before cell phones, Bluetooth, and streaming music. Back then we listened to the radio almost nonstop, especially when driving. And it was on some of the great radio stations in America where we heard some of the most classic rock and roll songs of all time for the first time. Back in those days new albums from major bands were released on Tuesdays. And it was absolute bliss getting to hear new songs from our favorite classic rock bands for the first time. I'll always remember when a new album from The Who called "Who Are You" was released. WBCN in Boston played it in its entirety on the day it came out. That magic music certainly made my morning mood a good one!

The transitions in this song were meant to emulate what it was like to listen to the radio before the era of digital tuners, when you could find many different genres of music with just a turn of the dial, and I do have to admit that I have broken more than one radio dial by repeatedly switching back and forth. And now, if you want to hear an epic masterpiece with so many transitions that it will make your head spin, I recommend 2112, which was created as a giant FU to the Powers That Be at their record label, who had threatened to drop them after their third album if they didn't come up with more "radio friendly" songs; they decided that they wanted to go down in a blaze of glory, so they recorded an album whose 7 part 20 minute title track took up all of side one; of course the PTB hated it because it wasn't what they'd demanded, but the fan response turned it into a huge success, after which Rush was given the freedom to chart their own musical course. 🎤 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Us 50s and 60s year olds have loved our rock n roll for decades. I wish all of you folks younger than us could have been there to experience the shows and events. No internet, no ipods, no spoilers before you go see a concert unless you heard of a newspaper review. So much of the surprise of the unknown is lost now, to an extent. Its hard to not get spoiled before shows or movies these days. Try finding older tour videos here on yt. There is such a collection of history on here. Keep up the great work and enjoy it all.

When Rush completed their 1978 album 'Hemispheres', the band was burned out from recording complex, epic music and touring... So in 1979, the decision was made to make a more 'fun' record w/ modern sounds... an album that was not so taxing to play. During this time, the British 'new wave' music emerged w/ bands like The Police, Joy Division, The Clash, etc... and Rush got into that style of music which also included reggae grooves and electronic samples. In 1980, Rush had reinvented their sound for this album 'Permanent waves'... 'The spirit of radio' and 'Freewill' became huge radio singles and became another platinum success. Usually, bands that change their sound get a negative backlash (Kiss, Metallica, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, etc.) but Rush made a seamless transition and became even more successful w/ this record and the next one - 'Moving pictures' in 1981.

This is RUSH's homage to their Hometown Radio station, when they were growing up, that unlike other stations that played the same 20 songs over and over again, Their station played every new Canadian Group, and played entire albums, and deep cuts of groups that you could hear no where else over the air, in a time when there was no MTV, no Videos etc. The stations catchphrase was " The Spirit of Radio".

The transitions in this song is the sound effect of turning the radio dial to a different station. THAT'S why there are so many different sounds. Back in the day, we had to manually turn the dial to get to the next station. Hence, the different sounds. You should react to Red Barchetta. They actually make the sound of a car in the middle of the song and remember, there are only 3 members in this great group.

Neil Peart states "...The song itself, musically, is switching between radio stations, with a reggae section at the end, the second verse is new waves, I’m playing like a punk drummer there, and that was all intentional.”

I've always loved the reference to "playing that song that's so elusive" because DJs often had singles or albums from other countries, before they'd been released where we all lived. So there could be a delay between hearing the song on the radio, and being able to buy it. And that meant, if you really loved some song, you constantly had the radio on in the background hoping to catch it, or to maybe even get it on cassette until you could get the LP. That elusiveness is like strawberries used to be in northern places. Part of what made them special was that they were only available for a short time during the year. Songs used to have a specialness that was created by greater degrees of rarity. Now music is so available people usually only listen to it while they do other things. Yet, if we go back before recorded music, imagine how much attention they must have paid, knowing they might only hear their favourite song the one time they heard it first played by someone right in front of them, or through the radio.

There was a DJ on WBCN in Boston who played a song called "Out Of Control" from a band called U2, long before anyone else in America had heard of U2. I remember the summer nights when he would play it and it sounded so cool way back then! He was playing "Out Of Control" even before "I Will Follow".

What's great about Rush, a three member band, is all three are top knotch musicians. Head and shoulders above most of their counterparts in other bands. Either you enjoy their style of music or not. But regardless, they are super talented. My favorite is "Closesr to the Heart". The message is perfect.

The Spirit of Radio is about the positive and negative aspects of the music industry. It is one of the 2 most popular Rush songs ever, including Tom Sawyer. Rush would never be allowed to leave the stadium alive without playing Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio. However, my favorite Rush song comes immediately after The Spirit of Radio on the Permanent Waves album. It is called Freewill and it shows how they can play changing time signatures so smoothly and still put forward a powerful message with great musicianship at a commercial level. Three musicians at their peak. Thanks.

The song reminds me how before the internet & digital music I'd listen to the radio for hours everyday. I couldn't afford many CD's (or before that cassette tapes for my Sony Walkman, or even further back - record albums) so the radio was an incredibly important part of my life. It brought a bit of escapism. Related to that idea is the great song 'My Music at Work' by the Tragically Hip. It's about how listening to music at work can help make the workday bearable. I'd love to see a reaction to it!

Neil was super well read and travelled....when he lost his daughter and then ten months later, his wife........he travelled the world for a while on his motorcycle.......he also wrote a book...............three people who sound like a full ensemble. They have a huge fan base and are admired by so many other musicians...........Neil up there with Zep's Bonhomme...in the top three of all time rock drummers..........they were musicians' musicians ..they mastered all aspects. Cool Fact; they stayed together as a band for FORTY YEARS.......and loved eath other until the retired when Neil Died a few years ago.

This song gets misinterpreted as a pro radio song when in fact it was a critique of how main stream radio formats were becoming too rigid and formatted and were pressuring bands to sell out to get air play...... "All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question Of your honesty, yeah, your honesty One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah" This album imho was one of Rush's best and most progressive sounding. The solo on the next song Freewill is just one example of how Alex could smoke Eddie Eddie Van Halen imho. BTW this was just 1980 and this trio was already sounding this good and had such incredible musicianship.

Neil Peart - the drummer - was driving into Toronto & it looked gorgeous, he said. He was listening to the radio station CFNY "Spirit Of Radio". That was their slogan! The whole scene & sound was a vibe for him. He explained his lyrics: "'The Spirit Of Radio' was actually written as a tribute to all that was good about radio, celebrating my appreciation of magical moments I'd had since childhood, of hearing 'the right song at the right time.' However, [the song's] celebration of the ideals of radio necessarily seemed like an attack on the reality - on the formulaic, mercenary programming of most radio stations, with music the last of anyone's concerns. And yes, it was really ironic that such a song became popular on radio, though it was a kind of litmus test. Some radio guys who 'got it' could hear the song and think, 'That's the way it ought to be,' while others - the shallow, swaggering salesmen-of-the-air - could be oblivious to the song's meaning and proudly applaud themselves thinking, 'That's about me!'" A key line in this song comes when Geddy Lee sings about concert halls that echo with "the sound of salesmen." Neil Peart came up with the line after hearing stage patter from bands Rush would tour with; these bands would give the same spiel night after night, often telling the audience that their particular city was the greatest in the world or had the best fans. Neil found it disingenuous and manipulative.

Great reaction. From what I've heard the way they switched up the beats and vibes in the song was meant to simulate searching for a song on the radio. Very cool. Rush is awesome.

I always like it when rock bands throw in an unexpected direction in their music. Led Zeppelin has that going on, a song of theirs, Hot Dog, is a fun change from what most of their work sounds like. A couple of more Rush songs to check out are Limelight, which has one of their best guitar riffs in my opinion, and Red Barchetta which is my favorite song off the Moving Pictures album.

All this machinery making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question Of your honesty, yeah, your honesty One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes and endless compromises Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah

My favourite song in my youth. They were just hitting their stride, but never went mainstream to studio execs. They did their own thing, literally. The result is RUSH legendary.

keep cruis'n, your perceptions are getting good! Rush IS Prog Rock, and the music supports lyrics and probably better than 99% of rock bands (especially after Hemispheres). My favorite Rush tune is "Freewill" kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKSD27Ohl7CXdrg.html. The breakdown is the mind-blowing. Do the audio version first to catch all the nuances. Enjoy your Sunday!

Rush is an amazing trio of musical geniuses. Btw - Xanadu is pronounced Zan-a-doo. The next song from them you should check out is another instrumental like YYZ called La Villa Strangiato. Prog Rock at its finest.
