    The genre is synth pop or electropop that became really popular in the 80's. Pet Shop Boys are one of the best at it, they've been doing it for four decades. Their music usually has irresistible dance beats and their lyrics are great, they mix in funny lines often. Some of their biggest hits: It's A Sin, What Have I Done To Deserve This, Domino Dancing, Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money), Always On My Mind, Go West.

    This is a great iconic song from the 80s. Love Pet Shop Boys. You should check out their duet with Dusty Springfield "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" and their cover of "Always on My Mind".

    The genre is called Synthpop, because almost every instrument is a synthesizer including the strings/pads, the chor anglais/human voice pads, and the funky bassline. The only organic/acoustic instrument in the song is the Jazzy trumpet bleating of session man, Guy Barker. It also has a heavy Electro influence with its bass line and it's rap influence, but they also delve into Hi-NRG and House, eventually. Pet Shop Boys have a f*ck-ton of hits and they are still going strong almost 40 years later. They always sound brilliant. Check out "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" next. It's a hit 80s duet with 60s UK Pop legend Dusty Springfield.

    I remember when this came out. I listened to a radio show called the Rock and Roll Alternative. The host George GiMarc would take his vacation in England every year so he could bring back new music for his show. The week this came out he brought it back with him. He said I've got a great new single but I'm only going to play it once because in a week or two, you'll be hearing it everywhere. And he was right. Great song and a great reaction.

    Great reaction. Hit #1 in USA and a ton of other countries. They had another huge hit called What Have I Done To Deserve This with Dusty Springfield that hit #2 in the USA and is just as good as West End Girls. They are still together and tour all the time. They have the most Top 10 hits for a duo in the UK

    Niel Tennant is the singer and the guy with him is Chris Lowe (keyboards). They are the most successful pop synth duo of all time, and still going strong today.

    It's nice and also reassuring to know that your generation is finding music from my era. Kudos to you young man! Keep opening your horizons musically, it will nurture your soul and help you grow. So much of society has been designed to divide the public today whereas in the late 70's early 80's there was a much stronger sense of cohesiveness amongst the people of the world. We had hope back then!

    I've always loved this sound too. I'd call it a sampling of rap, in the pre-rap days, with the new wave sound of the 80s.

    The song you were wondering about at 07:00 is One Night in Bangkok by Murray Head. Agreed it's got a similar style and was released the same year. Another song in a similar style from around the same time is Fade to Grey by Visage. Talking style vocals.

    Great reaction from my era, the 80's. Another great Pet Shop Boys song to react to is Domino Dancing which also features mellow jazz-Latin influenced synth. pop sound.

    Synth pop is the genre you’re looking for. They were part of the 2nd British Invasion. Check out Duran Duran, they were also part of the British Invasion. Wild Boys!

    Yes, you're correct. The strings are synthesizers. React to their songs Suburbia, What Have I Done To Deserve This (duet with Dusty Springfield) and You Were Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson cover) please.

    I remember when this song first came out, I was really impressed. I made up my Mind to keep an eye on this band. I wanted to see what else they could do. Well it turned out, that was all they could do. They even made Big Brass Bed sound like West End Girls.

    Bangkok is the track from chess was sung by Murray Head . Give "Say It Ain't So, Joe" by Murray Head a try. It's fantastic. It's not like this track by the Pet shop Boys which is incredible. It's more melodic than techno but it's great.

    They’re Iconic. Try the group Soft Cell “Sex Dwarf” it will expand your 80s New Wave experience. It’s a synth masterpiece/ tongue in cheek outrageous lyrics/ and no one had heard anything like it before. When this genre emerged it was exhilarating. I feel blessed to have been there in real time. The whole New Romantic-New Wave movement was fantastic.

    Funnily….in 20 years, young people will be asking how videos of you were created back in the 2020’s….and when someone tells them you are ‘human’, they might not believe it. That would be similar progress!

  • @annebaker9408
    @annebaker940810 ай бұрын

    This is 80’s music….someone had to play all the music…even the synth was just a programmed ‘sound’ that still had to be ‘played’ by a human…we didn’t have ‘fake/computer’ music yet…..we didn’t need it, and neither do you…..it is just a shame musicians are not as needed now. :-(
