This was the 70's when people actually got together in large groups and enjoyed themselves without cell phones. I feel so sorry for the young people today. They will never really know this freedom and joy. Tons of great music came out in this decade because each band tried to one up the others.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was the standard bearer for Southern Rock. They blazed a trail for top echelon bands of that genre who were also from their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Bands such as The Allman Brothers, 38 Special, Blackfoot, and Molly Hatchet. They were also influential to the Outlaws, who were from Tampa.

I never get tired of the instrumental second act in this anthem of a song. But seeing them going absolutely berserk on their guitars makes me wonder how many days, if not weeks, it must have taken to just get proficient at that part, especially when it really picks up. Truly, they were part of an era that inspired artists to really set new standards. These days, the standards just aren't that high.

The album that was released right before they were in the plane wreck had a fire scene behind them. The members most lit by the flames happened to be the ones to die or injured in the plane wreck. They pulled the album and release it again without the fire behind them. One of his brother’s took over in the band. The first night he came out to sing the song at Charlie Daniels Musical festival and he couldn’t sing it. He placed his brother’s hat onto the microphone and the audience sang the song, This was his brother’s signature song.

Yeah, the Confederate flag was definitely a big part of Skynyrd's look. "Southern Pride" was a big thing in the 70s and that flag was unfortunately a part of it. I don't believe there was any racist intent behind their use of it. Also, just like Monty Python, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the name of the group not an individual.

Your friend was probably talking about when they opened for the Rolling Stones at knebworth. They were told specifically told not to go out on the tounge of the stage, but when Allen started the solo for Freebird Ronnie grabbed him and the other guitarist and led them all the way out on the tounge where Allen absolutely owned that entire stage! This was a great performance but you should definitely check that one out! It was amazing..

@X X Yeah, Ok..That's why the Stones are still at it 44 years later, 'cause THEY SUCK! right?...Are you seriously comparing Skynyrd to the Stones?...Wanna compare careers?..Really?!...Wanna compare catalogs?..Wanna compare impacts on the music world?..Wanna compare overall concerts...LS, good band, but made their living on three guitarists who ran up and down the neck playing pentatonic scales, with amps cranked..Not that there's anything wrong with that, and they rocked out, but groundbreaking?..Hardly...Again, Stop..Just stop.

@@stevedamico5793 "That's why the Stones are still at it 44 years later, 'cause THEY SUCK! right?" No, the Stones are still at it 44 years later because they didn't try to muck a hole in the Mississippi swamp with their airplane. It's hard to gauge the potential of Lynyrd Skynyrd because 43 years ago half the band DIED.

@@mfree80286 Oh, I can gauge it. A band essentially built around 3 guitars wailing away wouldn't have even made it into, then out of the 80's, let alone a half century!...Could they have adapted? Possibly. Don't think so, though. There's little evidence of a Southern Rock band, (outside of the Allman Brothers, but they were much more than just a guitar slaying southern rock band, weren't they?) doing just that...That is not to take away from LS. I thought they were great, for what they had to offer. As I stated, they were a really good band, but to measure them up to the Stones is simply absurd..Besides, we only have what we only have, right?

I loved how the 3 guitarists were furiously jamming together near the end. I kind of wish the slide guitarist would have got together with them in that shot. I think it would've been the icing on an already great cake and an extra nice image of all 4 just giving it all they had. I remember the 4 guitarists in April Wine doing that and it was fun to watch.
