First Time Hearing "Like A Stone" by Audioslave

I told my friends/co-workers that "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic At the Disco is one of the best white boy songs I've ever heard. Now they're sending me song suggestions and I'm doing live reactions here.

    The gutarist is Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine Chris grabbed when Sound Garden decided to go their seperate ways. Chris Cornell is the Frontman/ vocalist for both bands but the Guitarist for Sound Garden was Kym Thyle another really talented but underrated guitarist in my Opinion. Both groups held their own so you won't disapointted listening to either group.

    Tom Morello on the guitar is a prime example of doing more with less. He uses a single amp and a very small pedalboard setup, and has for his entire career. Many rock guitarists use 2-3x as much gear as he does but can't pull the level of style and originality out of their setups that he can. He just knows every aspect of his gear inside and out and has a really creative mind. Dude is a legend.

    I have a great memory of this song. We live near a concert venue outside of Indianapolis, and there's an outdoor mall across the street. My wife and I went out for dinner and drinks. We sat outside since it was a nice night, and Chris Cornell comes on stage across the street. It was so loud we were able to hear it all. He passed away a year or so later. That was a moment I'll never forget.

  • @wadebuck69

    @wadebuck69

    2 ай бұрын

    @AspyreFGC I live in Muncie about 60 miles north of Indy and I remember that night very well also. Myself and 7 friends rented a van, bought a ticket and a nice dinner for our designated driver then spent the night chain smoking joints and hammering outrageously overpriced drinks while jamming to one of the best groups of musicians to ever be on stage together. The security guy in our section was getting pretty pissed at first because he was telling us to quit passing joints about every 5 minutes. I would light one take a hit and pass it in one direction and tell that person to just keep passing it down the line then I would light another one and do the same in the other direction. After about the 5th or 6th time the security guy yelled at me I pulled out my bag full of joints that was as big around as my fist and showed it to him to let him know my intention for the night. At first he stood there looking confused then threw his hands up and said "have fun motherfucker" and started walking away but I hollered HEY when he turned back around I was in my bag and came out with probably 5 or 6 joints held em up and asked if he wanted them for being cool with me because this was all happening before any music had even started but he refused and went on his way. Then about halfway through the concert our whole section was baked even the ones who just took the joint and passed it without smoking. It was that awesome purple haired skunk weed you could smell from the next county that used to be around back then and that I really miss today. Then I saw the security guy headed my way and when we made eye contact he just nodded a yes gesture so I passed him a handful of joints that were rolled as big as my pinky finger. He fist bumped me smiled and walked away lighting one up as " Like A Stone" was rolling through the air. I will never forget that as long as I live. It is funny how as we age there are so many things in life that we have experienced but have absolutely no recollection of but then there are other incidents that may seem innocuous and not something that would stick in the memory so strong but for some reason the memory is so strong it seems like it just happened. I reckon that's why it's called dope!

    His lyrics are fire. "On a cobweb afternoon in a room full of emptiness by a freeway I confess I was lost in the pages of a book full of death". Probably a lot of ways to interpret that, but for me it's imagery of a guy who's mind isn't in the right place, depressed, and thinking non-stop about suicide (Chris Cornell ended up committing suicide in 2017). He was also the lead singer of Soundgarden. Hopefully you have some of that in your playlist. I was in my 20s living in Seattle when Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc emerged. Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell and the band from Rage Against the Machine joined forces and briefly took over the world. It finally claimed his life after an overdose of Ativan.

    I remember hearing this song for the first time at a gas station and I just couldn't move. I couldn't leave until it was done. I was frozen into place. The sadness, longing and hauntingness of the vocals/lyrics and the unique sound and vibe of the guitar and the rest of the band made me feel like it was disrespectful to move. To this day whenever I hear this song somewhere 'out in the wild' I stop to listen. I owe it that, for some reason. The only other song I have this with is Sinead o' Connor's Troy. They are both on the heavy side though. As a sidenote: I later found out the clip/video was shot in Jimi Hendrix's old apartment as on ode to him. If you ever get to listen to the intro of Voodoo Child please do! (or other songs by him) He is def one of THE guitar heroes of all time, inspiring so, so many greats of later generations.

    My man. Love your channel. Please, please, please do a deep dive into Audioslave, and Sound Garden, and Chris Cornell as a solo artist. One of the best voices of our time. He could do it all. You won't regret it. Also, Tom Morello, the guitarist is the same cat from Rage Against The Machine.

    I've had this song on my current playlist since it came out. Never been dropped. I was a black girl in a Canadian high school in the 90s. My playlist was vast.

    Yes, this song is unequivocally better than I Write Sins Not Tragedies by PATD!. That's not to say the other song isn't good, but these are seasoned artists at the top of their game releasing their debut track. They're also totally different genres of music.

    Great reaction!! You won't hear many vocalists, that have the sound and range of Chris Cornell (RIP...CC). If you want to hear more of his stuff, you should check out Cochise, Show Me How To Live, Spoonman, The Day I Tried To Live, Fell on Black Days and Burden In My Hand..to start. And...if you want to have your mind blown, check out his cover of Billie Jean (by Michael Jackson) and Nothing Compares To You(by Prince). See what you think.

    RIP Chris Cornell. Chris was one of the gods of rock. He was the Wolf Of Rock. He opened his mouth and this unearthly HOWL comes out. Layne Staley (of Alice In Chains) was the Lion Of Rock. He opened his mouth and fucking ROARED. Chris and Layne were both titans of the Grunge genre. And we've lost them both. It's a bummer we never got to hear them sing together. It would've been fucking incredible.

    I love watching people, raised or educated (musically) in one genre of music, who then discover other genres. Metalheads reacting to hip-hop, rap fans reacting to 90's alternative; it makes me happy to see someone begin to appreciate something new, the lightbulbs turning on. Great stuff. As others have mentioned, the guitarist, Tom Morello, is also in Rage Against the Machine, but so are the bassist (Tim Commerford) and drummer (Brad Wilk). Audioslave is basically RATM with Chris Cornell as the frontman instead of Zach de la Rocha.

    White boy here, randomly suggested your channel while listening to some white boy shit at the gym. I love watching people who don’t normally listen to the music I grew up with. Since your listening to this song, I’ll suggest “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. It’s another emotional one. Coheed and Cambria as well but I can’t suggest one of those because most of them have a different sound. Keep up the good work, instant sub from me!

RIP Chris Cornell, your music lives on inspiring and moving folks.
