@@richardgray8593 To be clear, this audio is definitely a live performance (talented audio engineers may have been employed, but still). The studio version is amazing and more polished, but this has some nice quirks that help make up for the lack of the studio trickery they had back then (no auto-tune, but they could retake, remix, and filter tracks).

And the drum kit I ALWAYS pick for Addictive Drums is that of the late, great John Bonham. RIP, Bonzo: we will never forget you. Nobody else ever pounded the skins with such power and such feeling.

@nostalga51jo Yep. Bonzo was/is the greatest rock drummer ever (not only in my opinion, but in the opinions of MANY), and was the heart of Zeppelin. Bonzo's death was especially hard on Robert Plant, as they grew up together, and when Plant's young child suddenly died, it was Bonzo who was by Robert's side for consecutive days, so they were VERY good friends. Even if the other Zeppelin members wanted to reunite--and they did--Robert said he could never reunite, as the pain would have been too great for him to constantly have to see another drummer besides Bonzo.

I notice that you never comment on Zepplin’s bassist (John Paul Jones). One of Rock’s best bassists; also a huge contributor to Zepplin’s sound with his keyboards and other instruments. Give their song ‘s a second listen. That man deserves a shout out. You can be forgiven... there are so many moving parts in their songs. 4 musical Titans to be sure! Love your reviews of so much great classic music, Jayy.

A wee bit of backstory as well - "The opening date of this tour took place in Reykjavík, Iceland, which inspired Plant to write the lyrics. He explained in an interview: We weren't being pompous ... We did come from the land of the ice and snow. We were guests of the Icelandic Government on a cultural mission. We were invited to play a concert in Reykjavik and the day before we arrived all the civil servants went on strike and the gig was going to be cancelled. The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. 'Immigrant Song' was about that trip and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different. Six days after Led Zeppelin's appearance in Reykjavik, the band performed the song for the first time in concert during the Bath Festival.

  • @kjartanjonsson3061

Robert Plant wrote the lyrics when they came to Iceland in the summer of 1970. He explained: "We weren't being pompous ... 'Immigrant Song' was about that trip and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different." The truth about the strike and the concert hall is that it was not the University that prepared it, it was a group of youngsters (14 - 16 years old) that broke in to the concert hall and they took down an industrial exhibition that workers on strike could not do. Everything was neatly stacked up so the only thing left to do was for the moving company to take it away.

Led Zeppelin was back in the 70's. Robert Plant's solo career did not start until LZ broke up due to the Drummer John Bonham passing away. Led Zeppelin is considered one of the best bands in rock history and they have a ton of songs, some head bangers and some softer stuff. Which makes them very versatile and that is why so many people consider them at the top of the hill.

Many people have their first time hearing Led Zeppelin story; this is mine: I was 10 years old and had just bought a predecessor of the Walkman made by Emerson. Shortly after I bought it, I was walking into the local library when I saw a pink cassette tape on top of the book return box, no case, just the tape, "Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti." Not knowing what it was, I took it home and put it in my player. Immediately, that tape became my most valued possession. I had never heard anything like it. Every song on the album was perfect in its own way. The tape was wound to the beginning of "In the Light." On that day, I converted from nursery rhymes and Captain Kangaroo to rocker. My older cousin, who babysat me and my sister in the summertime while my mother was at work, couldn't figure out what happened to me, but I was different from that moment on.

This song seems to be about Viking raiders. So, it's supposed to be a bit scary/intimidating. "Valhalla" is like Viking heaven, so the line "Valhalla I'm coming" would be a Viking warrior accepting death before battle.

Real rock needs to hit hard again with the public. I think it's only a matter of time as new generations tire of the autotune mass produced music and take a listen back. There are bands still making good rock but they stay underground now and only the pop-rock gets a listen. I love a lot of genres but rock is always my favorite. I'm a middle aged black woman and find beauty in all music from all people.
