After every break up, I found this song soothing…. When my son was 17…. he learned his girlfriend was cheating…. my son a rap lover listened to this song over and over.

Hank suffered from Scoleosis and a quack doctor was keeping him drugged so the drugs along with the alcohol took his life while heading to a concert in Ohio. Hank Sr was the king of country and made country music what it was up to the 90s. Hank Sr is a legend in the country music world and tons of singers have re-recorded his songs. He wrote and sang the gospel song “I saw the light” as well as Kaw-liga which a lot of artists have redone.

On top of everything else he had, I tead or heard somewhere that (I'll assume because of his back issues) he gell off of a stage during a show somewhere in Canada... So, along with whatever else, on that last day/night of his life, he would take Morphine for the pain, and when that wasn't strong enough, he had whiskey... I also think it was rather cold out, and those cars back then didn't have the heating systems like they do now, even the Caddy's, and he was cold... Nothing worse than cold when you got issues like he did..

@@garytrew2766 yup. also had scoleosis but that was undoubtedly caused by his untreated Spina Bifida. Most people with Spina Bifida can't even walk. (My brother had it. Was paralyzed from the waist down his entire life)

It's hard to say anything about Hank Williams' life that is very positive, because other than his amazing talent, his life was short and harsh. But he could write a lyric like few other American songwriters. They don't call him the hillbilly Shakespeare for nothing.

Check out 'Move It On Over'. It's basically a blues tune. George Thorogood did a slide blues cover of it.

Dead at 29, his music has survived for decades, and a legacy of songs that will not be forgotten.

Hank was getting some sleep in the back seat while a college student he had hired to drive him to concerts was at the wheel. The young man had called for a doctor to check Hank out. Hank apparently had alcohol and chlorol hydrate in his system. The doc gave him 2 shots of vitamin B which apparently also had morphine in them. The kid stopped at a roadside diner and asked Hank if he wanted to eat and he said no. Then they stopped for gas several hours later and the kid tried to check on Hank and found that he had apparently died several hours earlier. Hank died at 29 yrs old. His son Hank Jr was only (I think) 4 at the time.

He wrote this to prove he could write for Acuff Rose records it was written quickly. He was a lyrical genius.

Hank Williams Sr wrote many gospel songs like I saw the light, which I am sure you are very familiar with.

Oh my absolute favorite singer of all time. My dad played his albums in early 50s. I was 4 in 51. We also listened to the Grand Ole Opry on radio on Saturday night. Hank Jrs song: Family Tradition is of course about him. He died so early. These songs are about his wife. It was not suicide. He was an alcoholic.😥 My favorite song is Lonesome Blues. Yeah, Kaw-Liga is my favorite. It's a pity the video had all those negative comments. The estate should sue. Hank was the original superstar. He had one hit after the other. Hey Good Lookin', Your Cheating Heart, Move it on Over, Lovesick Blues..., and a song we sang in church, I Saw the Light.

We all know that some people love to criticize anything for no reason. They know nothing to begin with

Hank Williams died before his 30th birthday and approximately 70 years later his music lives on and he has probably had more influence over country singers than any other singer living or dead. It is incomprehensible how many mega hits he might have had if he had lived a few more decades. He is the first country music singer I can remember hearing and I still love the haunting sound of his voice. "The song was not that great." Really? His voice was probably "too country" for you and in fact it's too country for many people but we must remember that his career was back when country singers all sounded like country singers because country people sounded like country people. He lived when television was in it's infancy and very few homes had a TV so if someone was born sounding country they pretty much died sounding country because everyone around them sounded country and they were not exposed by TV to the speech patterns or accents of slick big-city newscasters and celebrities. Hank did not commit suicide. In 1953, the year he died, there were no interstate highways so on two lane highways it took FOREVER to get anywhere. Hank was asleep in the backseat because he had just finished one show and was being driven several hundred miles to perform in another show and the performers back then could very seldom afford a motel room and mostly they slept on the way from one show to the next. That's why he was asleep. Because of the number of pills he took and the amount of alcohol he drank his heart stopped and he died of a heart attack...at the age of 29. My favorite Hank Williams songs are "Be Careful of Stones that you Throw", "I'm so Lonesome I could Cry" and "Mansion on the Hill".

Hank is considered by many to be the GRANDFATHER of country music to this day and is regarded as one of the biggest country legends of all time.

"Kawlija" is a favorite song of his. Hank wrote it about a wooden indian and his lost love. Charlie Pride does an excellent cover as well. (If you haven't gone down that rabbit trail yet, you should!)

I'll never get out of this world alive, is one of the last songs he wrote before he died. Worth listening to.

Country Musics OG and first superstar and a huge influence on Rock & Roll. Sadly, he was an alcoholic with major back problems. The alcohol and pain killers, combined, killed him. Botton line- He solehandedly put Country Music on the national map.. To put it a better way, he was Country Musics Tupac.

The best story I’ve heard about him was when he lived in Nashville his mother picked him up to ride him home. He couldn’t drive that far because of his back problem (and the morphine to treat it). He told his mom that when she saw the airport beacon to wake him up so he could gather himself before he got there. When she saw the beacon she reached back an shook his arm and kept saying: wake up hank I saw the light. By the time he got home he had written one of his most re-recorded songs that he ever did. It did set a standard for country gospel. His drug addiction was never talked about in his day, so I always imagine it just him and his monkey most of the time. He married a gold digger and he always missed her. He even arguably wrote the beginnings of the first rock and roll song when he wrote move it on over. Bill Haley only had one note different in his song rock around the clock. His music is dated but worth listening to if you like music history.

@@ruthhenderson5413 Edith didn't say all his music was sad though, just that one of his songs is possibly the saddest ever written (which many people agree with). I personally think "I Wish It Would Rain" by the Temptations is the saddest thing ever written (that lyricist committed suicide not long after writing it, out of heartbreak). A lot of people also think Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" is the saddest. But like I said, I'm So Lonesome is definitely one of the saddest and one many people agree with Edith about. So... gotta read carefully, man. Edith never said "All Hank songs were sad". Surely there's some up-beat foot tappers in there. Even positive gospel hits like "I Saw the Light".

Hank III sounds like his granddaddy, “Mississippi Mud” is a good entry into that rabbit hole

When I was growing up in a little west Texas town in the late 50s-early 60s, our only radio station was all country music. Hank Williams (senior, of course) was the voice of my childhood. My taste in music has expanded a great deal, but it does bring back so many memories to hear this now. I also like much of Hank, Jr's music nowadays. I felt bad for that little boy who lost his dad at such a young age, as my dad had passed when I was five.

Tom Hiddleston (Loki) played Hank Williams in the movie "I saw the light". Hank Williams died in his 20's... married twice by then. His mom used to drive him gigs in bars... allegedly a bar fight too many injured his back. He turned to alcohol to curb the pain... His first wife was an aspiring singer... but his popularity grew, while she floundered. That resentment ended their marriage. He settled down again, and would drive from gig to gig, but on his way to a show one night, while he was sleeping in the back seat, he started foaming at the mouth... he was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead. Likely cause was an OD of pills he was using to curb his alcoholism.

His first hit, "Move It On Over" was the forerunner to Rock and Roll. Bill Haley took the music and made Rock Around the Clock.

Hank Williams died when Jr was only 3 years old. So he did not teach Jr. However, Jr did learn from the best people in the business because of his fathers music. June Carter, who would later become Johnny Cash's wife, was Hank Jr's Godmother. Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino taught Jr to play the piano. All kinds of people hung around Hank Williams house because they were recording his songs, and they all showed Jr a little. Along with the one's I've mentioned, Elvis was there, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Ray Charles, Creedence Clearwater Revival just to name a few.

I’llNEVER GET OUT OF THIS WORLD ALIVE was one oh Hank’s hit records. Worth a listen.

This will allow you to understand how revered Hank Williams, Sr. Is in country music and in other genres. Trust me, Hank left a lot behind besides his son and grandsons who are also great singers. He left a legacy of hundreds of great songs. This is only one and unfortunately the information provided focused on his problems instead of his accomplishments.

Upcurch did a good job on the song, but to me it does not have the haunting vibe that Alan Jackson brought to it.

The book, "I Saw the Light", by Colin Escott is a great biography of Hank, Sr. Hank, Sr was a fascinating figure. He had amazing charisma. When he finally performed, "Lovesick Blues", on The Grand Ole Opry, he was called back for a record, 6 encores. He suffered his whole life with the excruciating pain of undiagnosed Spina Bifida. For him to achieve what he achieved in his short 29 years on this Earth, was quite miraculous. Yes, he self medicated, as would anybody, born in 1923, with undiagnosed Spina Bifida. The last night of his life, he was being driven to his next performance in the bitter cold and he was not doing well. He spent time at a bar, while waiting for his 2nd driver to be available. Hank was beat up in the bar, for flirting with some guy's girlfriend. He was in terrible condition after years of suffering and self-medicating. Because of his chronic pain, he never felt "he was long for this world". And, that was the night, he never woke up and his life came to an end. Very tragic, to lose someone so young, of course. For me Hank was, and is, the MAN. If you're into Country, he can reach into your soul and make it weep. I get teary listening to this number. His drinking was partly to cover the pain of his scoliosis, and his relationships were volatile. The prescription meds his doctor pumped into him killed him him on his way to a gig. They found him dead when they arrived.

Hank Williams will always be my fav musician of all time. If you ever get the chance, I would recommend “Wealth Won’t save Your Soul”. My favorite song from him. No one like Hank.

Hank Jr “Randall” was just a Baby when His father passed away that night in his car as a result of a Morphine OD. Hank Sr. was and is still the greatest. Hank Jr. was 3 years old when his father died.

You know I’m glad you play this I grew up I’m 66 I grew up during the psychedelic 60s we thought this stuff is so corny this kind of music but then the psychedelic music told us to look back in time and then we start to realize that all this music and all music was valuable and I appreciate this type of music from a different perspective

Hank Jr was 3 when Hank Sr passed.. Then Hank Jr's mother, Audrey, and others raised him in the music industry to basically be the like Hank Sr.. Eventually Hank Jr has a bit of a personal crisis, and started deviating from it. Then on a hunting trip, he fell hundreds of feet off of a mountain, that's mentioned in his song called "All In Alabama." That caused him to start wearing a hat, beard, and sunglasses to cover up his scars. And he started to find his own identity as an artist, instead of trying to fill his father's shoes, like many wanted him to.

The songs he wrote hit home with most Americans. He wrote his soul into every song . Died so young from alcohol and pills as did so many other greats.

Mentioned a few times already. An unreleased recording as an acetate demo was found. The quality was good enough with a little engineering to bring the song to life. Hank Jr, recorded part solo then duet with his dad including a video. Engineers were able to take some 1950's film of him performing, to make him look like he was singing the lyrics. At this point in the song, Hank Jr. joins him in harmony. There's a Tear in My Beer gives you an idea how similar their voices are.

My daughter when she was little would cry if if we didn’t play Hank Williams Sr and George Jones. She had an old soul

You should check out "There's A Tear In My Beer." Hank Sr recorded the track, but it was never released. Then, in the 80's (or some where in there), the recording was found & Hank Jr added to it before releasing allowing him to sing with his daddy.

Hank(luke the drifter) I just told mama goodbye!!!! And men with broken hearts.

I feel like the next step into the Williams family music needs to be Hank 3. I feel Hank 3 doesn't get his due, but I personally feel he is the most innovative of the family. He's got his granddaddy looks, and sound, wilder than his dad, and has brought many metal and punk fans into the country genre with his authenticity, and sound. Hank 3 is also known calling out the music industry and performers. I would recommend checking the songs "Not everybody likes us", "Dick in Dixie", and "Life of Sin" in that order specifically. User "Backwoods films" on youtube has great live recordings of all these songs. Look forward to you checking this out.

He died in a car passing through Oak Hill, WV at the age of 29 in January 1953. He was driven back to Montgomery, AL by Joe Tyree who died earlier this year. His daughter Jett interviewed Joe a few years back.

Hank Jr was 3 yrs old when Hank Sr passed away. A lot of famous musicians stopped by Sr's. place after he died and showed Hank Jr how to play a lot of different instruments. Unfortunately, he didn't learn anything from his dad and barely has any memory of him.

Hank Williams was only 29 years old when he died he would have turned 30 September of 1953 but the hard living the drinking and the heartache of losing his wife took a toll on his body, he did get remarried a couple of months before his death to a lady named Billie Jean Jeff they had a daughter named Jeff Williams but she was born 3-4 days after bank passed away .

You've mentioned a few times that you were in music ministries previously, so I would like to suggest that you react to "How Great Thou Art" by the a cappella group Home Free. Honestly, they have LOTS of songs that you'd enjoy like "Man of Constant Sorrow", "End of the Road", "Butts Medley", etc. They aren't a gospel act per se, but they do a fantastic cover of this particular hymn.

Hank was born with spinal bifida and was in constant pain. He turned to pain pills and alcohol to numb the pain. Eventually he turned to the hard stuff. But don’t be fooled by his reputation. This man was a poetic genius. He wrote and recorded some of the most beloved and beautiful songs in music history. Artists of all genres and generations have covered his music. Most folks outside of country music fans don’t even recognize when they hear a Hank Williams, Sr, song played by another artist. His music has become that ingrained in the American psyche. In 2010, the Pulitzer Prize Board awarded a posthumous special citation as “a songwriter who expressed universal feelings with poignant simplicity and played a pivotal role in transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force in American life.” This was the Pulitzer Prize Board, folks, not some second rate music magazine. Pretty heady stuff. Should make everyone who does not know Hank take a second look at this legend of country.

You should do his song "Jambalaya", it's one of my personal favorites, I loved hearing my grandfather sing it when I was a child. He had a country music band in a small town in Montana, Hank Williams sr songs always bring back those childhood memories.

Hank Sr. suffered from a life-long condition called Spina Bifida. He missed shows because of two serious Spinal Fusion operations. He also had a terrible fall from his horse. He became addicted to prescription pain medication. Unfortunately it was discovered, after his death, that his "Dr. Toby Marshall" wasn't licensed to administer the "treatments" Hank passed away from heart failure enroute to a New Year's Day concert in Canton, Ohio. He was only 29 years old. Hank Williams, Jr. was 3 yrs old.

That's not true, at all. Lovesick Blues is a cover, Cool Water is a cover. He did plenty of other people's songs, although he wrote the vast majority of his own material.

You nailed it when you related Country to Gospel and most of the people back then did not Think Hank was a good enough Christian to join the Grand Ole' Opry.

They aren't just sharing negative aspects of his life; it's well known amongst older people. There wasn't much positive, & he wrote what he lived. His death had to do with his drinking. And they were traveling with the top down on a convertible in December. If I'm not mistaken, Hank Jr was only a year old or so when his dad died.

In the 50-60s down south AM radio was it. Stations went off the air early, so with less stations on air, you could pick up stations from a long ways. KAAY (LR), Grand Ole Opry (Nashville), WBAP (DFW), WLS (Chicago), Lousanna Hayride (Shreveport). Hank made it to the Hayride, but I not sure about the Opry.
