He wrote from his own experience. Had a rough childhood, a bad marriage, and drank himself to death. Nowadays, we'd say he suffered from depression. These words are not written to just sell records. They are poetry to express himself. Beautiful imagery.

Still to this day, Hank Sr. is still THE standard bearer of all songwriters.

Hank Jr was forced to imitate his Dad but broke out of it all and as we now know he was huge in his own Rights!

Hank and Hank literally icons of their generations. It’s insane

Those old Country songs were bluesy and had a lot of soul. The imagery in this song is beautiful. Hank Williams had a voice that reaches into you with its sincerity. It's also uncommon today to hear a man sing about his feelings, his vulnerability, and his sorrow and not lose a single bit of his masculinity. It takes a real man to be unafraid to say what he's feeling.

Hank Sr is known as the Hillbilly Shakespeare. He also recorded under the name Luke the Drifter. You can't go wrong with Hank, Sr. His songs were inspired by his troubled and pain filled life. He died when he was 29 on New Years day 1953.

He's not just singing a song. Hank wrote all his songs, and bared his soul through his lyrics and talent for singing and playing. It's poetry and art. He's a country legend for a reason.

What you hear in Hank Sr's songs is pure pain and agony. White Man's Blues at its very best.

It's the simplicity of the melody combined with the incredible imagery in the lyrics, plus the urgency in Hank's voice and the bluesy quality he had. THIS is the reason he was a star way back when, and why he's still revered as a singer and songwriter today, 70+ years after he died.

Hank sr was very poetic he wrote how he really felt about love life and death he died at the age of 29 I truly believe he died from a broken heart they will never be another Hank Williams Sr his music is forever

Hank Williams Sr was outlaw country before outlaw country was a thing. Many have called him the Hillbilly Shakespeare. So many great songs and pure poetry. Many were penned under the name Luke the Drifter.

Hank Williams is the sound of strife and hurt and struggle. More times than not it hurts to listen to Hank Williams. But it keeps you real

I love the fact that you can appreciate his songwriting skills. This man was so far ahead of his time it's scary. And he was definitely one of if the original outlaws.

He grew up in abject poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s and suffered a severe birth defect called spina bifida that damages nerves that control lower body movements, which prevented him from playing games and being active with other children his age. His chronic back pain and a failed operation led to addiction to painkillers, alcoholism, anorexia and heart damage. In 1953, at age 29, he died from a heart attack in the back seat of his Cadillac while being driven to his next concert.

Hank suffered from the mildest form, spina bifida occulta [hidden]. Some people with it don't have symptoms or even know they have it. In Hank's case it meant that his pain was more severe, but that pain wasn't inevitable if he hadn't hurt his back.

Hank Williams Sr went from house to house in his early years listening to family's of all races on there front porches singing folk songs from there heritage. Alot of his inspiration came from that. That is as America as you can get in the music industry and why those songs were such a gift

I enjoyed that too. Hank Williams was a favorite of my parent's generation, I didn't pay attention to my parent's music. I've learned to appreciate it as you are also learning. An experience two strangers can share.

The song is meant to evoke the mood we have when we are so depressed everything we see seems reminiscent of that. In happy times a Robin in Autumn weather is bright and chirpy to our eyes but when we are depressed the same bird is weepy and indicates the “death” of the coming winter. Also ‘he sounds too blue to cry’ is using ‘blue’ as a mood. Maybe it’s old-fashioned but “I’m feeling blue” is a way to describe being ‘down in the dumps’.

I grew up on Hank cause he was my grandfathers favorite and between this song, tear in my beer and Hey Good Lookin were his favorite songs. So many memories rushing back listening to that. After Sr died Jr toured performing Sr's Songlist with Waylon Jennings(Struggles granddad), Merrill Hagerd, Willie Nelson and Cash and Sr's Wife was acting road manager basically to keep an eye on Jr and keep them all out of trouble and showing up to gigs. Then Hank the 3rd(which actually sounds like Sr) continued the tradition by singing Sr's songlist also while adding some of his own original songs in aswell and now has his country music band and also has a scream metal band. Great react especially to this cause not many from our generation would listen to him let alone connect to it.👍👍👍

As Luke the Drifter, Hank did a spoken verse recording about "Men With Broken Hearts." Many years later, Elvis recited some of those lines before singing "Walk a Mile in My Shoes." Both would be worth listening to if you can find them on youtube.

You have a poet's soul. I love how much you can appreciate the brilliance of some of these lyrics. Another Hank Williams Sr. song I appreciate was Cold Cold Heart. Hank sr had something wrong with his back.. it caused him to live with the worst pain imaginal.. he abused prescription pills some.. but he was a great artist.. he was actually one of the few that paved the way for artist of all genres

If you've ever heard the Monday night football advertisement song that starts "are you ready for a party? Are you ready for some football?" Then you've heard Hank Jr. His songs are more to the hard partying kind, although he has put out several albums with a variety of music. Definitely worth a listen.

Hank Sr. had a heart condition and constantly toured and didn't rest much. Plus he drank whiskey heavy. He died at a fairly young age on the way to a show and the driver noticed he had been real quiet for a while, so he checked on him just to find that he had died.

We used to call this howling at the moon music. Melancholy as a art form. He has a catalog to explore. If you want to go back further maybe some Woody Guthrie He became the first American protest singer by just describing what he found by tramping around the country singing ☮️

Yeah...his son started doing his dad's music but he had a different sound and wanted to show that. His Grandson, Hank III....also started out doing his Grandfathers music, and even when he started doing his own stuff, it still had that same sound.
