Everything off the Tidal album is great. She was a big artist in the 90s, and was writing very powerful stuff at a very young age. She did a lot of really good stuff later, but Tidal just overshadowed it. Alanis Morrisette had a similar issue. And, I have to admit, she was sort of a 90s Dream Pixie Muse for me as well. There was probably some risk of being killed in your sleep back then, but probably worth it.
Fiona is one of the rare musical geniuses of the last 25 years. Her passion is unsurpassed.
Fiona’s one of the best artists of the past 25-30 years. Definitely worth a deep dive. She’s always 100% invested in the song. Check out “I Know” live at Largo.

Polo will LOVE that performance. Her writing is poetry, and when she performs, it's chills the whole time.

Fiona Apple is one of the bravest writers I've heard. She sings honestly about what everyone else hides. Exposes herself in a way that reveals the definition of Artist. Not a bad album in her discography. I have such admiration.

She is but she never wrote this particular song. It's a cover of The Waterboys' song, and she is killing it. And I adore both her and The Waterboys.

@@amandaoconnor2854 Yea thats true! I just try to spread the word when I can. Real real artists are so marginalized, and I just have so much respect for her
PLEASE check out Tori Amos if you haven’t yet.
Her song "sleep to dream" is absolutely amazing - it was an early original song by her. that could have been all she did , and I would have remembered her as one of the greats. She doesn't get enough credit, but I think she has too much integrity to want that much credit. I am also reminded that her song "Criminal" is wonderful too.

Just a heads up Shadowboxer was her debut song
Her cover of Elvis Costello's "I want you' done live with him is chills
"Shadowboxer" is another great one. Fiona is amazing!💜💜💜
I agree that Fiona is one of the best vocalists and songwriters. “I Know” live is stunning.
You gotta check out the original version by Mike Scott and The Waterboys to have a point of reference. This cover is respectable but the original is a lot to measure up to , it is very layered and features the late Karl Wallinger who went on to form World Party , another band worth exploring.

Try Fast As You Can or Extraordinary Machine. She is in a class of her own.

YES!!!!!!!
Huge Fiona Apple fan here! When her last album,' fetch the bolt cutters', came out, I listened to it repeatedly for an entire year. Love her heart and soul.
Brief summary: Fiona Apple is one of the most influential and acclaimed artists of the past 30 years. She’s released only five albums in that span of time. Yet, she’s made a big mark. A variety of artists have talked about being influenced by Fiona or admiring her. Kanye West once said he wanted to be the “black Fiona Apple”. Jay-Z, Sza, Frank Ocean, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Lorde, etc. have also shouted out Fiona at one point. Fetch The Bolt Cutters, The Idler Wheel and When the Pawn are imo her three best albums. I’d suggest checking out When The Pawn first. It’s probably the most “pop friendly” and easy to digest of her albums.
So excited to see you finally get into Fiona Apple. If I’ve missed you react to her music before, I apologize. She was and is such a treasure. Vocalist, lyricist and musician. You have to check out “I Know” and “First Taste” oh and “Sleep to Dream”. She is soulful and just an all-around fantastic artist!!! Her debut album “Tidal Wave” is a perfect album. Jazzy, smoky, ethereal at times and dead sexy. That reminds me, “Criminal” is a 90s banger. ❤❤
Her earlier own material is great - Criminal or Shadowboxer - great stuff - the song above is a cover, she does even a better cover of the BEATLES "ACROSS THE UNIVERSE" great stuff and very talented.
Sarah McLachlan is another remarkable artist to check out. THE woman's voice of the 90s!💜💜💜

Shadow boxer and criminal are 🔥. Fiona was so young when she recorded these
Oh and when you finally get to “I Know”, check out the live version. Pure, raw emotion!!
Her tune "Criminal" is one of my faves -very talented
The original is SENSATIONAL! Please 🙏 do that one too
she told a story on the marc maron podcast that made me love her. she found a hummingbird nest in her yard, and she was standing there watching it. and then a gust of wind blew the nest onto the ground and broke the eggs. and then the mama bird came back and hovered in front of her face as if to say "you just killed all my kids" and she had no way of explaining to the bird that it was not her fault. but she still lives with the guilty feeling of being accused of something that she never did. i feel so bad for both of them, and the overall inability to properly communicate is tragic. i admittedly have not kept up with her music since i was in highschool. but she had two big hits in the late 90s that really still hold up.
I am a Fiona Apple fan. I also love the original version of this song by The Waterboys. You should check out even without a reaction

Amazing band!
Fiona Apple is an amazing artist. She hit big in the late 1990s at about age 16. She has a voice that just speaks of having lived one hell of a life even at such a young age. Another artist who is similar, but also in a class of her own, is Neko Case. Amazing voice; amazing songwriting.
Fionna Apple is such an amazing artist. She was born with a voice that sounds like she chain smoked for 80 years
She's worth a deep dive as your reaction for sure tells us just by listening to her cover... 🙌 her duet with Andrew Bird is a real one as well. "Left Handed Kisses"
Fiona is an all time, my favorite female performer. Her passion and song writing is just so raw and real. Hope to see you do some more of hers.
For me, The Waterboys version is superior. That being said, it was intriguing to hear her interoperation. I look forward to you reacting to more Fiona Apple. When you get some spare time check out The Waterboys, you won't be disappointed.

I know the song - my era! But Apple's version has brought out so much more from the lyrics than I had ever heard or felt into....but then I was 23 then, and 63 now...life experience reveals more in music, performance and lyrics I guess
She gets a thumbs 👍 for the dance at the end ❤ peace ✌️ Polo...
I loooove Fiona Apple! Been a fan since her first album Tidal, & have too many favorites to list all of them all but these are the first ones that come to mind: Shadowboxer, Sleep To Dreams Paper Bag, Limp, Not About Love, I Know (live version), Shameika. She also sang with Andrew Bird on a song called Left Handed Kisses I love - you can see and hear her emotion so clearly. Hope you enjoy the listening experience even if you don’t record it all!
As much as I want you to take a personal deep dive into Fiona’s own works, another incredible cover worth watching is a 2006 live performance of the song I Want You with Elvis Costello. A hauntingly brilliant performance by Fiona. I don’t even love the song so much, but her performance is top notch! 10/10
I first heard Fiona Apple playing in a cafe in London and I asked the rather rude server to please find out who this was singing, it absolutely captivated me. Check out her version of Frank Sinatra's/Bob Dylan's 'Why Try to Change Me Now' (live). On another note, this was a big hit for The Waterboys here in the UK but their song 'Fisherman's Blues' is astounding and worth doing a video on ❤
My introduction to Fiona was the song Criminal. Loved it immediately. Her catalog is full of so many amazing songs with deep heartfelt real lyrics.
She is amazing in every way❤️❤️❤️ You MUST check out her music.
Fiona Apple is a phenomenal artist, giving the industry the finger at every turn. She is uncompromising. Check out Ladies, ladies, ladies.
Wow. Thanks so much for introducing me to this passionate version of one of my all-time favorite songs.
This was a rehearsal which is why she's holding the lyrics. She wanted to make sure she had them down cold before the actual take. The background vocalist is Phoebe Bridgers and her producer Tony Berg produced this track. Her other producer, Ethan Gruska played the piano. Wendy Melvoin, from Prince's band played bass, Matt Chamberlain who played with Tori Amos, Frank Ocean, Pearl Jam, etc. was on drums, and the amazing Patrick Warren played the Chamberlin. The whole thing took a couple of hours. They kept this rehearsal as the final version and everyone got home early. It was a pretty magical day. Recorded at the famous Sound City Studios. It's a special song and there are some great versions out there including The Killers, Prince, and of course, the original Waterboys.
From the left field. Manchester band New Order "temptation". Yes 1981, coming from the electronic side of hip hop you may get it. Or for real early electronic from them "blue monday" has been sampled alot.
Thank you for reacting to one of my favorite artists. What a gift to get to see someone be moved by something that moves you so deeply too. Thank you! If you are looking for more Fiona Apple recommendations, all of her live performances are passionate like this video was, and she doesn’t really have any bad albums/songs to speak of. Her newer albums (Fetch the Bolt Cutters and Idler Wheel) have a lot more experimental arrangements and non-traditional percussion and her older albums have more focus on piano and a jazzy kind of sound. Her lyrics are always 💯.
yes! check out "fast as you can."
She's pretty cool. She did some live stuff in NYC, plays piano, sings, dances crazy and belts it out
Sleep to Dream from 1997 is a must. It's her best song, in my opinion. Wiki says it best...Sleep to Dream is a slow, smoldering tune in which Fiona kisses off a reluctant lover. I don't usually pay much attention to lyrics when I first hear a song, but Sleep to Dream is an exception
Check out "Sleep to Dream" and "Shadowboxer" by her, she is amazing.
What a great song! First time for me with the song but I love Fiona Apple! Thanks much
Someone pay him to watch Fiona’s HOT KNIFE video.
Played at the end of The series The Affair, which is quite profound. The Waterboys, Scottish there are the roots. Original 1985.
Huge respect... this is among my favorite video of hers. You've tapped a deep, deep well. ❤
Her video for Shadowboxer was on MTV at 1am. Black and white video with her singing in a studio. Stopped me in my tracks.
The original of this by The Waterboys is... how shall I put this... much much less angry. The only Fiona Apple song I know is a hauntingly beautiful cover version she did of Across The Universe. Worth checking out.
Can't go wrong with Fiona! Limp and Fast as You Can in addition to the ones others have mentioned.
Dude, Fiona Apple’s first album was a must listen in the 90s. I think she was a teenager when she wrote it. Amazing work that I still listen to even now (and I’m a grunge/rap guy)
Great choice. You’re going deep. She’s got albums going back 25 years or so. And there isn’t a bad one in the bunch. You definitely want to listen to the songs she made when she was really young. Shadowboxer.
"I Know" live @ Largo is a great example of Fiona's passion. She's not only a great and versatile singer, she's also a brilliant composer, pianist and lyricist. Do bear in mind Fiona's career took off with the release of her 1st album when she was 17, which showed an artist extremely mature for her age. She was critically acclaimed by media at the time, but she soon became an outcast due to her unwillingness to conform to the mainstream industry standard. Have fun doing a deep dive on her discography, you won't be disappointed.
Have you ever listened to Tracy Chapnan? Crossroads has a VERY poinient message. The Promose is UNFORGETTABLE. Would LOVE to get your reaction to either, or dare I hope BOTH songs?
Never heard this cover before I love it love you
I have heard the original by The Waterboys and I love it. Put it on my playlist. I didint know Fiona did a cover, but it is great as well
She has some amazing music out there
Hi Polo. There's a show called "Echo in the Canyon" Jakob Dylan (Bob's kid) put this together. She sings duet with Jakob. I think they did Beach Boys "In my Room". It's memorable. "Echo" is like Part 2 to "Laurel Canyon" SO good! I'd call them documentaries and immensely entertaining!
Fiona is amazingly talented, an incredible passion for her craft. Incredible voice, great musician, excellent writer. She gets a lot of praise from other artists who say she influences them, and a decent fan base but not as big as she deserves. I blame that on the industry. Fiona doesn't bow down to the music industry, she is a strong and convicted personality who knows she is talented and that she doesn't need to be commercialized to sell records. She isn't going to be some pop diva and sell her soul like most of the popular acts do theses days.
This was incredible 🎉
Extraordinary Machine is one of my favorites of hers!
Her voice is so beautiful!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ this song cuts deep into your soul!
She went there! She crossed the line from singing the song to being infused into the music. For that short period of time the music became her soul. A very difficult thing to do.
Almost lost grandma ❤ with this one ❤ what do I know 😔 peace ✌️ Polo...
Wow just wow
What a treat. I love her; only have one of her CDs and hadn't seen this Thank you so much The drummer gave as much to this as Apple's performance. I was kicking with the drums, lying here in bed. My favorite artist is Annie Lennox. Hard to decide which to recommend. If you don't like one, another will be very different. "No Fear No Hate No Pain No Broken Hearts"
She's a truly excellent songwriter as well. Check out the live video of Never Is A Promise (there are a few - the best is the one clocking in at 6:15) Just her, a piano and minimal electronic keyboard accompaniment. From her first album, and written when she was 16, I believe. It'll knock you out.
Love Fiona Apple, other great songs: I know, Criminal, Paper Bag, Sleep to Dream, Shadow Boxer, Not about Love .❤
Fiona’s amazing. Check out Every Single Night. Not sure it’s quite your style, but has so much of what makes her special.
I like her "sleep to dream"! ...

A masterpiece
never heard this version before..its beautiful... . its like they threw fleetwood mac,m. etheridge, jewel, collective soul, inxs, and smashing pumpkins in a pot for the music and when it was done mixed it with a suorisingly audible chillwave alien baby joni mitchell ... 4 the words and feel
You really should listen to her first album, the one she released when she was 17 years old.... the album with "Criminal" and "Shadowboxer" and other greats
One of my favorite songwriters. Check out Extraordinary Machine.
❤⭐❤⭐ Awesome
Her first album is sooooo powerful, check it out it’s amazing!
You can’t go wrong no matter where you start with Fiona. For a deep dive it may make sense to go chronologically to get a a natural understanding of her evolution as a person and an artist. Personably I’d say go by your mood, she’s not exactly easy listening, but damn she’s brilliant.
I'll know ❤live OMG😊❤
Great cover. That girl can go. She's amazing. Great cover of The Beatles "Across the Universe". Plus her own music is awesome...just like Jane's Addiction
One of my all-time favorite songs and bands (Mike Scott is a genius) and my favorite Waterboys cover. Fiona nails it.
The original song came out in the 80s, during the time of New Wave. I don’t know that I would call her version “New Wave”. It’s definitely alternative, but it’s almost too unique to put in a single genre. I highly recommend listening to the original. It’s definitely the same song, interpreted differently. Other great New Wave bands you might enjoy would be New Order, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Tears for Fears (Bad Man’s Song), Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Call, The Smithereens, Simple Minds. You’ve found a great group of listeners who guide you into some of the best music produced over the past 45 years.
My twenty something self is used to the Waterboys but this version is good as well
Her and Iron & Wine's new song is so sweet. "All in Good Time"
Buzzy I thought I was the only one that has seen this clip lol
Fiona is amazing. My #1 is Tymps (The Sick In The Head Song).
For singers with passion may I humbly suggest you check out Mark Hollis from Talk Talk singing "Life's what you make it" 🔥🔥🔥
Have to watch/hear the original from The Waterboys.
A song of these times.
Fiona Apple is an outstanding singer-songwriter who cropped up in the 90s at 16. The music industry did not treat her kindly - they wanted this pretty young woman to display herself in was over-sexualized, of course, and she was very uncomfortable with that. She basically fell out of the mainstream light because of this, but continued making music. As she's gotten older, her music has only gotten better and better, as childhood idealism turned into adult sadness and comprehension of how life goes, like it or not. Her live cover of Bill Wither's Use Me is outstanding, as is both The Idler Wheel and Fetch the Bolt Cutters.
She didn’t write this song. It’s a cover of the 1985 song by The Waterboys song that was inspired by Prince. It was written by Mike Scott. You should do a reaction to The Waterboys performing it. You can hear the Prince influence clearly.
The original song is from 1981/82 by The Waterboys, and new wave. Fiona Apple had made this song her own but it is worth to check out the original too.

i wrote it was hers lol and i was writing ,listening, thinking about what it sounded like made me think of artists and bands. it came across to me as chillwave with a hearing aid and new glasses on
May I just say that it's CRIMINAL that you didn't start out with "Criminal" by Fiona Apple. Someone else suggested Sarah McLaughlin. I highly suggest the song "Possession" by her.
Another vote for the original Waterboys version. Not an easy cover, Fiona is super talented and owned it- but the original is hard to top.
Would love to see a reaction to Chris Cornell’s cover of A Day in the Life (Live at Royal Albert Hall). You may not see this suggestion a lot. Didn’t even know it existed until recently but it is pretty amazing! If you don’t want to react to it, just give it a listen. I highly suggest it.
Please review Hollywood by the incomparable Rick James, this song is about his beginnings to stardom and he wrote it to his Mother and Family. You’ll love it!
If you liked this one, you should hear Limp by Fiona
Ok so another recommendation I commented on a previous reaction to Led Zeppelin- I Mother Earth.. here is one that is long and deep check out "The Universe In You" OMG it's amazing .. just sayin. 🤯
I love me some Fiona Apple, and this is a fine cover. But IMO the original by The Waterboys crushes this one like a grape. Mike Scott is a heck of a songwriter. He also wrote "How Long Will I Love You?" which was made famous by Elle Goulding. One should definitely hear The Waterboys' version of that one, too. "Be My Enemy" "Fisherman's Blues" and "And A Bang On The Ear" are some other great songs by The Waterboys that you might consider.
