This is one of my favorite Dre beats. All the layers of sounds going on are very NIN-esque

Thats the exact reason why i think that this is the best instrumental in hip hop ever in my opinion. Its like Dre and Sneed just kept adding more and more sounds to the beat but every sound makes sense and everything fits so good in the end so beat doesnt sound like its over produced, lot of people that dont pay attention to those thing actually dont know how much shit is going on here, like that water bubble sound or weird ass guitar sfx thats barely hearable even with headphones. If you count in every single element of this song including all the vocals and shit this is easly 48+ channel mix which means they mixed this shit on the big ass mixing board, and the way they mixed all those elements is real crazy.

Fellas fellas we gotta get a few things right. When the Friday Soundtrack was released back in 1995 (where this song originated from), Dr. Dre was still on Death Row Records. Aftermath didn’t exist yet. At this time no one has heard of Eminem, except on the local battle scene. Eminem’s Infinite dropped in 1996 and it wasn’t until late end of ‘97 when he released his Slim Shady EP where he introduced the world to that persona. ‘98 is when Dr. Dre caught wind of Eminem from the Rap Olympics, this EP got in his hands and we all hear a trio of freestyles from the Stretch Armstrong show that created a whirlwind of press. Over night Eminem is huge. Even bigger than that. But this right here, nah, this wasn’t Eminem’s lyrics. These were done by J.Flexxx who ironically wrote a diss song against Dr. Dre for the Death Row Greatest Hits album lol. Suge was salty when Dre left.

Check out early Ice Cube if you’re going down the rabbit hole, 1990-2000. Cube and Dre did one together Natural Born Killaz after the beef was over. As a white kid growing up in Australia I lived for this shit. The first rap album I bought was Kill At Will by Ice Cube when I was 13 and I was hooked. It was tough to get info on rap stars and music back then in Australia, it was nowhere near mainstream, no one listened to rap then and no internet. Been listening to hip hop/ rap ever since. I’m enjoying watching you guys explore and enjoy history.
