This song is about a girl that Tom Yorke liked who had no time for him, it's not in any way shape or form about being celibate. Plus he's not walking round in 2020 saying he's a creep this was from the 90's.

@Susan Lynn You're both wrong. It's actually about a girl that the singer really liked but lacked the self esteem to talk to. He basically quietly stalked her because he couldn't get the courage to talk to her. There was something in the story about her running out the door, which is part of the lyrics too. I think it is when he played the song live when she was there. Below is close to what I've read preivously: Vocalist Thom Yorke wrote the song prior to Radiohead being formed. Yorke came up with the song while attending Exeter University in 1987. Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead's guitarist, has stated that Yorke's inspiration for writing the song was a girl that Yorke had followed around but couldn't speak to. She showed up unexpected at one of his live performances and Yorke didn't have the self-confidence to introduce himself. Yorke has all but confirmed this story by admitting that "Creep" is the story of a drunk male who follows a woman around in a desperate attempt to be noticed and approached. The lyrics of "Creep" are basically Yorke's recognition of what he is - a man that lacks the confidence to approach a woman that he has become infatuated with. He puts her on this pedestal and views her as being special while he is merely ordinary. He lacks a perfect body, lacks a perfect soul, and has little control when it comes to taking initiative and pursuing someone he's interested in. He views himself as a weirdo that doesn't belong in her presence and can't compete with other testosterone driven males. Source: www.musicbanter.com/lyrics/Radiohead-Creep.html

Fun fact: When the guitarist stuck the strings at the transitions he intentionally hit them with excessive force trying to sabotage the recording, as all the band members actually really disliked the song. Instead of sabotaging it it actually created an iconic moment in music as people actually found it special. Causing the opposite effect.

@@michealhockofficial2215 They grew weary of the song due to the fact it was a massive success, despite them themselves not finding it all to impressive. I should note that it was just the guitarist that tried sabotaging the song. He never liked the song when he first heard it, song whenever they would perform it he would purposely strike the strings with force. Creating that "Chunk chunk" sound. They refused to play the song for some time. But I'm not sure that is still the case. So it wasn't the hole band trying to ruin it, just the guitarist.

Creep is not a great example of who/what Radiohead is. Don’t get me wrong, I very much like this song, but the band has evolved their sound over and over and over on subsequent releases. Creep is from their debut album and was their biggest commercial success in the US, but is universally considered their worst album when compared to their other works

Fun reaction! :) For what it's worth, I don't think this particular song is quite the same as the incel community: it's less about the singer not being able to get with *any* girls in general, and more about how he feels creepy, unworthy, and incapable of connecting with the one specific girl he's in love with.

I think you nailed it, and that's what attracted people to the song. The beautiful people are outnumbered. There are so many that are introverted and awkward and average or only one of those adjectives, that people were so able to relate to the words.

You just nailed it too Jason! That’s exactly my thought. Back in the 90’s the words “introverted/socially awkward/mental health/etc.” were not words we used. Instead, the closest thing to those words that we all knew at the time were “weird/crazy/creep.” Am I right? 🤘🏼 I think at the end of the song he just gives up lyrically by saying “whatever makes you happy, whatever you want. I wish I was special. You’re so fu**in special, but I’m a creep.” AND musically as the harshness of the music dies. Love this song HollaAtKrazy!!
