This song is about his relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. They had a super toxic relationship. Their daughter was born around this time hence all the references to pregnancy and birth. The "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black" part is in reference to Courtney who's zodiac sign is Cancer. Kurt was a Pisces who are known to be emotional, romantic, squishy - The "She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak" line I always felt illustrated how he knew they were bad for each other but she'd give him "that look" and he just couldn't say no. "Locked inside your heart shaped box" - trapped in an unhealthy, codependent trauma bonded, addiction fueled, messy, passionate relationship.

Kurt Cobain was a game-changing musician (and pretty easy on the eyes) but he sure could design a set that a serial killer would love. The fetuses, the organ lady, the weird Klan outfit on the kid, I don't know. I don't analyze their videos or lyrics, I just enjoy the music. I always found Nirvana videos kind of depressing and a bit too visceral for my taste.

  • @brandonb.5304

This song is largely about Kurt's toxic relationship with his wife, Courtney Love. The references to Cancer are references to Courtney, who's zodiac sign is Cancer, and to Pisces, which is Kurt's. Even though Courtney was bad for him, Kurt, being a Pisces, kept going back. This was also around the time they had their daughter, which is why there are so many references to fetuses and birth. Their daughter was another reason why Kurt stuck around. Like he was connected to her with an umbilical cord, Courtney could just pull him back. If you know anything about Courtney Love, you know how egomaniacal she is. She claims the song is about how great her vagina is and how Kurt couldn't resist it. That's what she claims. Though, I wouldn't believe anything she said at face value.

min 7:53 "they got babies from trees.." about 700 years ago an Italian poet by the name of Dante wrote a book called The Divine Comedy, one of the greatest works in western literature. In it, the hero, Dante, is taken down to visit the various rungs of hell, where he witnesses unspeakable horrors. One of these is "The Tree of Suicides" or "The Woods of Self-Murderers". Dante describes a tortured forest infested with harpies (lady with wings) that torment the souls trapped in the trees. In the book, the act of suicide is punished by encasing the soul of the offender in a tree, thus denying them passage to heaven and damning them for all eternity. Those damned for suicide will not re-inhabit their bodies on Judgement Day, but instead witness their regenerated bodies hang from the "Tree of Suicides". The Heart Shaped Box video is in fact Kurt's modern re-telling of the classic tale by Dante.

This song came about when Kurt was in rehab and he is thanking Courtney for all she did for him. He definately has a dark sense to him. The heart-shaped box is what she sent him while in rehab so he smells her scent on it. He wants to climb back into the womb because he is feeling sick at rehab. Angel hair is a type of noodle while baby's breath is a flower. I lived during this time and still have little clues as to what the hell he was trying to say.

This song is about his wife, Courtney Love. It was written around the time she found out she was pregnant. You'd need to know a little about them to get a lot of the imagery in this video, but it's generally understood that this was basically Kurt explaining that his abusive wife was using their child to control him ("throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back"). A lot of the imagery in the video relates to her, the poppies (heroin), the Klan hood (her racist family), the figure of Christ (she went to a Catholic school). She likes to claim it's about a literal box he gave her but almost all of what she says tends to be bullshit. Most fans understand and accept that he was there against his will, she was a psycho, she was abusive, and he felt he had to be there just because of their child. It's all very tragic really. Things probably would have been very different if he'd left her then instead of trying to make it work and ending up dead.

Notice the 100's of poppy seeds everywhere, Heroin, (he wanted william S Burroughs to be the old man at first) Also a reference to passionate love. Then just general collaging of American fucked up symbolism. You won't find many Nirvana songs that make too musch straight ahead sense, there very vague on purpose. He liked it that way. But I think it's mainly about being locked in the sweet embrace of heroin at it's core. There probably isn't a band that is as different to the process of making rap music than nirvana, but many hip hop stars who love them, I know Dr Dre, Beasties, Post Malone etc.. love them. Gtreat musos love great musos.

The thing that gets me about all the reactions to this video is that everybody is watching the standard "official" release and not the director's cut. I don't think the director's cut actually makes anything any clearer, but at least it's more interesting (or confusing) than just looking at Kurt sitting with Dave and Krist as he sings the last verse. In the director's cut, you've got the obese organ-suit woman walking along the trail through the forest. *_(Why?)_* You've got KKK-girl pushing a Victorian-age wheelchair. *_(Why?)_* All of that interspersed with shots of Kurt Cobain lying (asleep? dead?) in a field of poppies. (Okay, I think we can all grasp the significance of *_that!)_* Oh, and for anybody who doesn't already know, Obese Organ-Suit Woman is supposed to be a grotesque parody of the "Visible Woman" with wings on the cover of the album _In Utero,_ from which this song was the first single.

The song and the video are not about the same thing. The video is simply about imagery that somewhat around the periphery reflects the song but not exactly. Kurt at the time the album was written was really into anatomy and that makes its way into the video as well. It's really hard to explain, I lived through that time I'm 55 years old and I remember it's really not a complicated thing but I guess when you look back on it and you didn't live through it it seems rather complex but it's really rather simple, just enjoy the music for the music's sake, enjoy the lyrics for what they are, and enjoy the video for what it is, and they are all separate. And, lest I forget enjoy Kurt for the genius that he was.

fans compare kurt to the messie of a generation but kurt put himself in this position wanting fame and celebrity , like jesus coming himself on the cross and waiting for the crows ( people and press ) to eat him , in fact is a metaphorism of himself .

I don't think the video has one specific meaning. The song itself is pretty universally agreed to be about an abusive relationship, and a very specific one at that, but I'm gonna let other people talk about that because the video really has nothing to do with abusive relationships, at least on a surface level. The video has a lot of themes and evocative imagery that could mean a lot of things-- you have the old man in the hospital bed who becomes jesus in a santa hat, the dead fetuses, the girl in the kkk hat; themes of birth and death, of the commodification and trivialization of religion in order to inspire and indoctrinate people into hateful ideologies, questions of who is at fault for these ideologies being passed on-- ideas which Kurt, a pretty outspoken feminist and all-around hater of nazis and fascists, who repeatedly expressed frustration that his music was enjoyed by conservative chauvinists who thought it was "macho" because of kts genre, would probably have had a lot to say about. You have the field of poppies, from which heroin is made. This sort of "wizard of oz" imagery with everything. It all makes you think, it makes you _try_ to figure out what it means, and i think that's part of the point. Not to tell you what you _should_ think about it, but merely to ensure that you _are_ thinking about it. This imagery is there because it's evocative and sets a very particular mood, one that doesn't know what the answers are, it only knows that _something_ is _very wrong,_ and it wants you to feel that something is wrong as well. All of these themes: abuse, death, reproductive health, racism and bigotry, and the connection between those things and a highly distilled form of american christianity, are all things that we as a society often try to ignore. But this video doesn't want us to do that. It wants us to look them right in the eye, and sit with them, stewing in the discomfort they cause us, and not running from it. Or at least that's my read. I think the political aspect kf Nirvana's music is often ignored in favor of their more immediately personal themes, but when you're writing so much about things like gender, sex, mental and medical illness, politics are unavoidable-- these things are strongly affected by the political landscape around them, and for those who deal with them the distinction between personal and political issues is non-existent, because their very bodies are political, and they have no say at all in what gets done with them. That's another thing that society likes to ignore, and when these issues compound for years and years with no end in sight, they can kill you. They killed Kurt. However you believe it happened, his death was fundamentally facilitated by the willful ignorance of society to the very issues he sang about until the very end. Healthcare, mental illness, bigotry, abuse, sex, gender. It's all right here. Right in front of us. We just have to be willing to open the curtain and look at it.

Don’t rate grunge guitar solos. It’s not about technicality. It’s about reenforcing the rest of the song. To sort of prove a point almost. Grunge is dark in its deceptive simplicity. Every little mistake has a meaning

Kurt admittedly did not put much thought into his lyrics. It’s not that deep, it’s just a great song from a great era in music back when people understood irony and everything was cool.
