What’s up BTS Army? Welcome to the channel! Before you comment, I have just a couple addendums to the video: 1 - I will be returning for more BTS every 8 weeks. My channel explores 7 different genres, and I’ve decided to add BTS as their own 8th category. I know that’s a long time for you to wait, but I hope you’ll consider subscribing and listening to the other songs with me in the meantime. 2 - There have been many misinterpretations of my video, so I want to clarify that I am not a regular reactor, nor a music theory instructor, but somewhere in between. My goal is to find what rocks in every genre, and discuss what I hear. I talk a lot about autotune in this video (because that’s what stood out to me at the time), but I did not dislike the song. Quite the opposite! I am very excited to see what else BTS has to offer. 😊 3 - I know I skipped over the lyrics. Hundreds of you have told me so, haha! I’ll focus harder on them in the next one. 😉 See you there?

I replied earlier, but I’ll put it here too. I’m excited to see what you explore next with BTS. There IS a reason they have the support they do, and it’s cool to see people find out why. I loved your informed and respectfully honesty opinions. People use them and ARMY sometimes for their own gain and it’s sad. So when people are honest, we know we can trust them while we watch them explore their art. Thank you! 💜 Also, the majority of ARMY are of similar thinking, so I hope the ‘fans’ that are rude won’t deter you. They exist, but they aren’t the majority.

The use of autotune was very deliberate in this piece, it’s intended to compress their individual timbres to a singular voice. They’re essentially playing a single character ‘the artist’, who is struggling with their Jungian ‘shadow’, the fear of losing their love for their art. The costume switches are also a deliberate part of the storytelling, not just aesthetics, To begin with they’re in white with a touch of black/shadow when performing on stage and in black (shadowed) when offstage. By the end they’re fully shadowed even when on stage. You missed the depth of the lyrics and performance because you’re approaching a psychological artwork without quite a lot of background knowledge (not your fault) and a somewhat superficial set of expectations of what ‘boyband’ music should be. BTS are really not a boy band in the sense of a western manufactured pop group. Best to avoid trying to make those comparisons. It’s probably more useful to think of them as a performance art group combining music, dance, acting, visuals and fashion/costume to tell stories and explore themselves as developing humans through ideas, art, culture, philosophy, psychology, history and a questioning of society and their place within it.

@@MidnightNotion what caught my attention with bts is how they build everything around the message they wanted to send out. the music, the art, the visual, the dance, the lyrics, the whole album - it all connects to the story or message they are telling. There's so much psychological and emotional intelligence that is weaved into the presentation of the message got me too. They believe that the music people listen to have the power to influence and impact one's life and psyche, thus they are intentional. that started me off this journey anyway :)

Thanks for your honest reaction. You'll find that most ARMY appreciate that type of review over the faked enthusiasm some reactors post. When BTS use autotune in their studio versions and in the MVs, it's a stylistic choice. This is why many people much prefer their live versions. They are amazing performers. I hope you continue to listen to them. Their discography is huge and they sing about topics that most shy away from. And as for the switch back and forth from white to black clothes? It has everything to do with the music. Put the captions on and you'll understand it's about their fear of losing their passion for music and performing.

bts are so popular because they tick every box for most people: catchy songs in every genre, poetic and relatable lyrics written by the members, amazing performances, and a lot of extra content that lets people learn about their personalities. If you're solely a person who connects with the audible listening experience when it comes to music it may be a bit more difficult to pin down which songs you may like out of their discography. My recommendation is to watch their recent "Proof Live" show as many fans would probably agree that you can get a real feel of their passion when live. The full version included 3 songs off their anthology album - Born Singer, Yet to Come and For Youth (there is a talking portion in the middle that you can either skip or watch haha)

Thank you for this reaction! I'm an ARMY, and I know that you'll probably receive a lot of rude comments from people who wanted a more positive reaction, but I think the genuine fans will really appreciate this! What we're looking for is people who go into BTS with an open mind and stay honest and respectful, and you were great! I understand how you feel about the autotune, and I'd just like to clarify that it's being used as an artistic device here. If you take a closer look at the lyrics, you'll see that this is a song about BTS's fear of losing their passion for music, so the monotone-y autotune was actually a really clever way of expressing that in the sound of the song! The lyrics are really deep, and that's true for all of their songs; one of the many, MANY reasons that ARMY loves BTS is that their lyrics are expressive, relatable, poetic, and always have a deeper meaning. If you want to see a live version of this SPECIFIC song to get a sense of how it sounds without the studio autotune, they did a fantastic performance of it on the Jimmy Fallon show, and it also really showcases the choreography! If you'd like to explore their other music, I'd suggest the Festa Live Room 2021. It's a ten-minute medley of some of their b-sides, and it's a fantastic display of their versatility and just how much they're capable of conquering genres! It's also produced specifically for their fans (unlike an award show, for example), so they're very comfortable and you get to see a bit of their personalities. Again, thank you so much for your genuine reaction: everything that you said was reasonable and thoughtful, and you were very kind about it, so thank you! I'd really love to see you continue to explore BTS and hopefully come to understand why they mean so much to so many people. Have a great day! 💜

The bar is set so high because people especially reactors and interviewers sometimes 'hype' bts so much that others are finding it so weird, if you do that, this is what you get. The full experience can be found on the lyrics, music, mv & live performance (singing & dancing) + their personalities. The fans arw captivated with BTS as a while. It's all connected, including the fictional storyline. As for me it's not that i heard one song i become a fan already. My daughter, some relatives and some friends love them for years but i never gabe them any chances not until something about them made me interested to check them out. Then that's it, i started my journey with open mind, i tried watching MVs, okay, i started rrading the oyrics, oh wow, i started watching introductions, makes sense, i startwd watching run bts, ok im def an Army. Some might love them instantly but for me it's a journey.

Thanks for listening to something outside your usual zone. I get that you're a musician so musicality is what you focus on, but one thing BTS is known and loved for are their lyrics - I'm not exactly sure why you completely overlooked what is being said in the song, it's a deeply personal reflection of something the group experienced that they articulated based on a quote from famous dancer Martha Graham....For me, as a 53-y.o. Texan with a lifelong love of 80s BritPop (Tears for fears, psychedelic furs, The Cure) and then alternative rock in the 90s and 00s - BTS stands out as an entire package of talent NOBODY has matched in the west. Who else combines multiple music genres, rap, vocals, professional-level dance talent, and unique live performances all in one?? Personally I barely even notice auto-tune, because I'm so familiar with their voices, and electronic music is never anything I turned my nose up at (so much BritPop was 100% synth-driven).... That's fine if you feel a sense of purity within music with real instruments, but I have never really limited myself like that so I have to admit I don't really understand people who do. I sincerely hope you continue your exploration of BTS' music and that you find something that you can connect to and appreciate. But if you don't, that's ok too! My dislike of death metal has zero effect on the integrity of it as a music genre to its fans, and if you end up not liking BTS, it is not the end of the world!

This is not really the song that you should begin with. Not your fault, I realize. BTS’ albums are thematic and Black Swan is smack in the middle of the Map of the Soul album series. To fully understand the song, you have to understand the psychological concepts by Carl Jung. The dancer, Martha Graham, is also a huge influence on the meaning behind the song. I’m not really a fan of autotune either, but for this song it helps us grasp where they are going with the song. They are afraid that music will no longer move them. The autotune demonstrates that lack of passion. The shadows signify their doubts and fears. Again, the fear of losing that passion for music. Everything BTS does is intentional. Every movement, visual, lyric, composition. THAT, my friend, is why people everywhere love them.

You should read the lyrics, this song was about their fear of loosing their passion for music. I myself really liked the song. But also i don’t really mind the autotune. They do have great voices they often sing live (while dancing!! Really hard and impressive) and the youngest, jungkook, often goes live for army and sings his favorite songs with or without music. Thank you very much for reacting to BTS, they are a band made up of 4 vocalists and 3 rappers; they have 3 songs in English that are pop; which for sure were the ones you heard, they brought it out in the pandemic to encourage everyone who listens to them because of the terrible situation that has happened because of COVID-19. Run BTS (not the variety show) Fake Love with their rock version And then try their real foundation, as they are a hip hop group with a pop influence: Mic drop (Aoki version) Ugh Ddaeng Outro tear (although May be too soon) Live: Festa 2021 Room Proof live And there’s a badass triplet of Come back home, no more dream (debut song) and mic drop. Dep breath. I will try to keep this short. I am a 69.5 years old American. I saw the Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan Show on a black & white TV. I am a fan of several genres. The Stones, Jethro Tull, Wynton Marsalis, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, Alabama, The Beach Boys, Carly Simon, Garth Brooks...you get the idea. I have never loved a group like I love BTS. They are very different. What sets them apart is not necessarily their music, although I agree with all comments praising their lyrics. It is their humanity. Their goodness. Their genuine personalities which they willingly expose to the world. Their generosity. Their humbleness. They have addressed the UN General Asssembly three times. They have diplomatic passports. They were invited to speak at the White House. THAT is BTS. Nothing short of a phenomenon. They love each other & they love their fans. I am proud to be a silver ARMY.

Agree. While they have many aspects that makes fans love them, beyond everything else, I think most deep purple armies are in it bc of their PERSON, their humanity as you said. Sometimes I step back from it all, look inwards, and felt a kind of observant of their existence in this world society, the effects they bring and brought and still bringing. It made me think I need to live a long life in order to see where they go in the future. I don't want to miss out on their ending! (But I am mid-40s already, so for sure I will go first, but I at least get to see them grow up! We've gone thru their teens and 20s now... looking forward to their 30s and 40s... and if lucky for me their 50s? Haha...

In all honesty, I was very sad since I absolutely love this song. That being said, thank you for being honest and genuine…the vast majority of army will appreciate that the most(please don’t judge us on the handful of hatred you will probably find at some point, every fandom has some extreme members)…anyway, as I know you’ve been told- the lyrics are key, and we (army)will watch hours of breakdown if you’re genuine and respectful, which u were. Bts hits just about every genre. Their performances include many with heavy choreo, amazing vocals or straight rap etc…I have no doubt we can find a song you’d enjoy as auto tune here was a stylistic choice, not a necessity and def not something they use for everything. Imo everything they do is better live. Your eyes tell- vocals, Japanese. Omg amazing vocals, but please watch the live….the studio version is great, but the live Is just better Magic shop - my fav live that shows their bond with army Armypedia or tiny desk are both great lives that have no audience, or choreo- just them sitting and singing. Outro tear-includes only the 3 rappers- one of the 2 best songs i have ever seen live…again the live at wembley really showcases their emotion….and the other half of that- the truth untold -which includes only the 4 vocalists ( stage mix is great& easier on copyright) Ok I will stop there as I’m sure you will get many suggestions and maybe you’re not interested in continuing that far…. 💜💜💜💜

I like your honest reaction! Black Swan is a song that has quite a bit of auto tune giving that it is more hip hop oriented and less vocal oriented in my opinion. BTS have a lot of diversity in their music and there’s not a single genre they haven’t dipped their toes in at this point. A lot of people come into BTS expecting a pop boy band with more good looks and less on the vocal ability. Their vocals in fact are one of the main reasons I became ARMY. This song wasn’t a great representation of the amazing vocal skills they have. BTS have 3 rappers and 4 outstanding vocalist and they all sound very unique! If you decide to listen to more music of theirs you’ll quickly be able to hear the diversity in their voices! I would recommend Run BTS, the lyric video. Not to be confused by Run by BTS but - Run BTS by BTS.

Thank you for your honest thoughts. First exposure to BTS is always a hit or miss for non kpoppers, BTS covers so many genres of music that there is a possibility the first song you hear is not your cup of tea. However, people most definitely agree they are way better live. I see some people have recommended BTS Room Live, which is a good one. In addition to that, may I recommend some of their stadium concert clips? As you can see from all of the comments, there are a lot of things that go into how a BTS song sounds - talents of the group members, album theme, position of the song within the album, song genre, group/rap-line/vocal-line/solo song, Korean cultural influences, etc. If you are just listening to the music composition and production, then you'll only "get" a part of the song, which is fine. I appreciate that you were honest about what you heard. For me, the lyrics are what I appreciate about their music. Having a bad day, then Zero O'Clock might be for you. Pissed off about the state of the world, then Am I Wrong or Ugh are what you need. Need to get hyped, then Fire or Dope might do it. Feeling like your kid thinks you're made of money, then play Spinebreaker. Need a good cry, The Truth Untold will do it. Need to feel like someone in the world cares about you, well, there are a lot of BTS songs for that. But I also like that some of their songs have Korean references that foreigners have to work to understand and appreciate. They are, after all, Korean. (The string instrument you hear in Black Swan is supposed to be a gayageum - kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5aezcaKm8K6Zbg.html, which reverberates like the autotuned voices and adds to the emo feel of the song.) The rap songs, in particular, have a lot of wordplay that uses cultural idioms and metaphors. Ddaeng is awesome, but you need to watch an explanation video to fully appreciate it. And as you noticed in Black Swan, the use of both Korean and English allows for some cool sound scapes and structures within the music. And the MVs add a whole additional layer of complexity and storytelling to their music. So it can be a lot to try to take in the music, lyrics, and visuals all at once. But I hope you check out more of their music. There's usually something for everyone.

30 seconds into this and I knew where the comments section was going to go. I highly recommend their tiny desk performance if you want to hear them live and with a band. To understand why BTS is so popular is a very complicated thing to explain. It's different for every person. They have lived the last 9 years of their lives almost entirely in front of a camera sharing their pains, struggles, failures, growth, successes and have done so in such an open and honest way that it's hard not to root for them and want to see and hear more. If you watch even 1 of their "come up story" videos you'll have a much better understanding of how hard they had to work to get to where they are today. I know many bands work hard but their story is profound and has touched many in a way that is hard to describe. They write and produce a large portion of their music and are highly involved in their performances. Nearly every song and video tells a story and the behind the scenes and dance practices are also worth a watch. They fill the world with so much positivity, love and light and while you'll hear plenty of hate spewed at these boys, you'll never hear a word of it coming from them. As a 50-something woman from the USA, these young men give me hope for our future as a society and I will be cheering them on through whatever they choose to do in the future. I enjoyed your review and appreciate trying something new. Honestly is always welcome! I really do hope you'll do more! Along with tiny desk, I'd suggest Mic Drop, Daechwita and Fake Love for a nice variety. 🙂

One thing that really makes BTS stand out are their lyrics. For all international fans it's sometimes not easy to grab everything they're saying and so for some of their songs there are explanation videos, mostly made by Koreans, to explain Korean wordplay and cultural context. If you are curious what I'm talking about, watch the rapline song called 'Ddaeng' and afterwards the DKDKTV explanation video. Their popularity and the unwavering love ARMY has for BTS is something you will grow to unterstand if you choose to invest your time and get to know them as individuals and their different personalities. If you continue your journey you'll most likely at one point watch The Rise of Bangtan (a fan made documentary), Run BTS (the show, not the song), Bon Voyage and In the Soop... you'll learn about their way to where they are today, about their struggles and their achievments... and at one point you'll notice, that yes, you finally get it! Oh, and don't worry about long videos... we're here for them.

Thanks for this honest reaction!! You were very respectful and I get where you are coming from. BTS actually really have nothing to do with the rest of Kpop groups or Western boybands and I believe this is a very important point to understand them and their music. They started as a hiphop group and are made out of 3 rappers (2 of them coming from the underground) and 4 vocalists. They take part in writting, composing and producing their own tracks. They are also really passionate about their craft and "Black Swan" was a song they made about their fear of not being excited about any song anymore, comparing that feeling to their first death. BTS really shine in live performances, so if you are up to it, great recommendations are "BTS Room Live" to to see how broad their range actually is, "House of Cards" live for the vocal line and "Outro:Tear" live at Wembley Stadium to see the rap line in their element. Also, please do turn on CC to read the subs, because they are a lirically outstanding group and to appreciate their songs you really need to know what they are saying. For other singles in different styles maybe try checking out later "I Need U", "Mic Drop (Steve Aoki)", "Young Forever", "Dope", "Butterfly" "Blood, Sweet and Tears", "Fake Love" or "On:Kinnetic Manifesto". They also have individual stuff since years back, but maybe we can recommend that later on 😉 Only thing we ask to anyone reacting is to keep an open mind and be respecful, that's It. Hope you enjoy the journey!!

I love bts because of their discography. It has no skips(in my opinion ) and maybe i didn't listen to a lot of pop artists but their music doesn't sound like anything else to me-it does sound unique. They literally have songs to your every mood and in so many genres. You probably won't get it if you just listened only to one song but their albums are amazing, they have interesting concepts and tell you a story. And one of the most important things is their lyrics. There are not so many artists or musicians who can move you/touch your heart but bts definitely can. Like many others have pointed out... Not reading bts lyrics (if songs in korean) is basically a crime... 😭 One another huge thing people aren't mentioning is the fact that bts are album artists. Their albums are stories about themselves. And it usually comes out in trilogies or duologies... Map of the soul 7 which is the album black swan belongs to explores an artist's shadow and persona and ego based on carl jung. Black swan is basically in the second part of the album and written by the leader of bts, it goes into what might be an artists biggest fear, which is loosing the passion for music. So why did they use auto tune for such an important song in their career? They wanted to blend the 7 voices together, making it seem all 7 are one person. There is another version of this song that was released first, that uses more strings. The auto tune is sooo heavy in that version that when it first came out people who've been fans for years couldn't distinguish their 7 voices. It sounded like one person. Also the video for that version showcases a modern interpretative dance done by a foreign dance crew. You might wanna check out bts albums in order, or entire bts albums, otherwise you are missing out on gorgeous storytelling. The bts members right now are exploring their individual careers, and the first member to release an album was jhope. His new album Jack in the box is worth checking out, the 10 tracks are supposed to flow into each other. He also put on an incredible performance of the new album live on lollapalooza yesterday. That's worth checking out too.

It will also be great if you can try to understand the theme and the meaning of the song coz they don’t just sing pop songs, they are more than that. They can do various genres. Also, its fair to review the song that you listened/watched at the moment but not their entire music, voices or performance based on one MV. There’s a lot of content out there to review anyway. This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist. The music video of BTS' songs is great, but it's even more beautiful when you watch the live stage. We recommend you to watch the live video. "The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music." [Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating no more listening to music Tryna pull up Time seems to have stopped Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of [RM] If this makes me cry no more If you can't make my heart tremble more How could I ever die like this But what if that moment’s right now right now.

Backstreet boys and BTS aren't the same at all for one reason. Backstreet boys is a boyband with boyband music. The only "boyband" thing BTS has is the fact that they are a group. Other than that they are closer to solo artists than anything else, musically speaking since they don't limit themselves to a single genre. Their catalog is a lot wider and every little detail in their music counts and is related to the message, especially their music videos. No piece in bts's music videos are here "just for the aesthetic". It's always some kind of symbolism, even the outfits, sets, colors... etc

English is not mine first language so i hope you understand me. If you are musician that is only interested in music, sound, production and instruments you're probaly not gonna like or become a fan of BTS for their music. Don't expect something revolutionary and approach them without prejuice and an open mind. You will like 2-5 of their songs, but liking BTS is a whole expirience if you only focus on one thing you might be missing the whole message. The're not like the 90's boyband or girl groups, even in kpop they upgrade it to something more meaningful. Their lyrics, music, effects, videos, visual, dancing are there for a reason is a storytelling the same as their album. It's similar to when you read a book, watch a film( BTS do have short films for their albums) or watch a painting, is open to interpretation but when you hear its creator explain it to you it has a new meaning. They have a few shallow songs just for fun, but also many deeper and meaningful songs, if you lisent to them for the first time you will think is just a silly pop or love song, but there is more behind like an iceberg. Anyway you don't have to look into it if you are not interested as it take some time and energy. Why do us Army like BTS? Well liking BTS is a whole journey and it depends from people, but there is a conection between BTS and Army, that you can only fully understand when you are an Army. This is the reason why we support them and have archived many things, It's something that transcends language and music.

Midnight Notion, I love that while the video is playing, you have it large on the screen, with you and your background smaller, so that we can distinguish the members and actually read the CC/subs. When people position the small video in the lower right or left corner, and we pause to study something on the screen shot, or read the subs, the subs are often hidden by the various items at the bottom, like the time progression line, the volume, CC, settings, etc. Sometimes we watch reaction videos, especially with knowledgeable music industry reactors, to see one of their hundreds of works for the first time. But mostly we are very familiar with the songs, the lyrics, the explanation videos and articles, the behind the scenes, etc, and never get tired of seeing them again, and often enjoy sharing someone discovering the wonder that is BTS and their oh-so-varied and multifaceted productions. I like that you stop the video to opine or add technical knowledge, and don't talk through it thus missing what is going on. I also give you a lot of credit for realizing this may be not illustrative of their phenomenal and finally well deserved acclaim and are willing to watch more of BTS' HUGE body of work and to learn more about them as people with their exceptional intelligence, talents, variety, humor, goodness, incredible dedication to hard work, the hardships and struggle they have endured and conquered, etc, etc. I am a senior ARMY, introduced to them by my Phi Beta Kappa daughter. TBH, their BLACK SWAN performance on James Corden's show, and finding out how interesting and complex their entertainments are, the work they personally put into it all, and their variety, such as the enigmatic BANGTAN UNIVERSE storyline in many of their songs, and their hilarious RUN BTS contest episodes got me hooked and developed me into a dedicated fan.

Because BTS lyrics are a big part of what make them so good I suggest either looking up the lyrics or watching a lyric video first then watch the MV. Their MVs can be distracting especially if your aren’t used to using subtitles. There’s a reactor that first reacts to lyric videos, then the MV (if there is one) and then the live performance in one video and a lot of people seem to like the format. Though be careful with lyric videos sometimes they try to get them out fast and the translations are off, usually too literal and not taking into account the cultural meaning/slang. Doolset is a good website for lyrics and will even have commentary as to the Korean references that westerners won’t understand. There are also some explanation videos for their MVs for songs like Spring Day which is really meaningful once you know the concept behind the MV and Idol which the video seems like just crazy fun but actually has meaning and a lot of Korean cultural references. Fans of other bands/singers may not like long videos but ARMY loves them and loves when people break stuff down and appreciate how good they are live. Don’t be afraid to check out their b-side tracks some of the ones released can be catered to a pop audience like DNA or Dynamite which have the most views but aren’t the most meaningful. Also don’t assume their lyrics are about a relationship most go deeper than they seem on the surface. They have three fully English songs (Dynamite, Permission to Dance and Butter) which are purposely more pop to attract more western audience but don’t really reflect their discography. I would suggest Fake Love. People who don’t listen to rock will call it a rock song in my opinion it has a somewhat rock vibe but isn’t a rock song unless you go by Billboards definition of rock who calls most rock bands metal and metal bands heavy metal.

With "Black Swan," BTS divulge their most harrowing shadow yet, one that any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion for creating. "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Martha Graham. This quote is at the root of the sentiments inlaid in "Black Swan." Much like a dancer feels purposeless when they can no longer express themselves through dance, BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they stopped creating music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death. RM sings, "If this can no longer resonate / No longer make my heart vibrate / Then this may be how I die my first death." Once again, BTS affirm that despite their countless record-breaking accolades, the wealth they've amassed, and their ever-increasing fame, they are artists. What means most to them is the art - music, visuals, dances - that they create.

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I just wanted to add my thoughts. A lot of people have already sent suggestions and such so I wont do that, but I wanted to say my opinion on the song (and BTS songs in general). I can take or leave autotune, though I feel like in this song it rather fits with the message they are conveying. I first heard this song when I was dealing with some burnout at work and the lyrics really hit me and inspired me. For me, what really sets BTS apart is the messages they share. Don't get me wrong, they are amazing artists and performers (their live performances are amazing and I highly recommend them), but what drew me in was their lyrics. I grew up in the boyband era and I was not a fan. Not because the groups weren't talented, but because I felt like they shared very similar messages and most were typical love songs. BTS sings about some pretty heavy subjects and convey very meaningful messages. I work in the mental health field and it is amazing how many people have named BTS as the reason they were able to get through rough times. They have songs about learning to love yourself (actually there's a whole album about it), dealing with sadness and depression (i.e. Blue & Grey), speaking out on social issues (i.e. Baepsae) and so many more. They do a variety of different genres as well, and I love seeing how different they can make their sound and look for the different songs. I'd love to see you react to some other songs of theirs and see what your thoughts are.

I have a question. You kept saying in your review that "Black Swan" was like many other pop songs and that you had heard it all before ... that it sounded like most other pop songs out there in the time period! Please can you tell me what are some of the other songs are? I would be very interested to know. Also, your initial comment about auto tune was that you would move past it - however, you continued to mention it many more times in your reaction. I guess I would be interested to see what happens if you do focus on ... the auto tune?! A couple of other things most of which were previously mentioned - lyrics are the most important; some songs are more heavily dance focused than others; this song is always performed, meaning some version of the dance (and there are multiple versions) is done when presented live at a concert or show; auto tune is always a stylistic choice for BTS and is the exception rather than the rule and I think I am correct in saying that is mostly when the rappers of BTS are singing and rarely the vocalists; the fact that they do not stick to any one genre is one reason that sets them apart and finally, I can't think of another band from the west that both sing and dance at the highest standard live! I do hope you check out more of their 200+ discography plus their back stories because BTS treat ARMY like no other band has ever treated their fans in my lifetime and I'm 63!

I can’t name specific songs because my main genre is rock. I’m not well-versed in artist and song names in hip-hop, but I work in audio production, and I know enough music theory to understand what is and isn’t standard. I get that “trust me, I know what I’m talking about” isn’t a very good answer, but I don’t know what level of music theory knowledge you have. This song is in 4/4 (common time), uses a western, 12-note scale, and a stringed-instrument loop; it has a simple kick-snare pattern with a trap hi-hat on top, and occasional reverse cymbals for transitions. All of those things are extremely common. But remember: “common” does not equal “bad.” I never said the song was bad, I just pointed out what I was hearing. It’s fine enough on it’s own, it just wasn’t as fresh as I had expected.

@@MidnightNotion Definitely not a good answer, but yeah... at least you recognize that I guess 😅 That one also got me. I was like "what music are you listening to that sounds like this, because I love this song and wouldn't mind something similar". I guess what you describe has no meaning to me, as long as the song sounds unique and exciting to me, which this definitely does. I can't name a song that I feel sounds very similar to this, the lyrics are deep and interesting, and their mv is artistic and beautiful... so to me it is definitely "fresh" in all the ways that matter to me.

Okay to be honest K-pop is heavily inspired by the west from music to clothes to trends so there isn't much difference for that matter the reason why is because Korea has a relatively small home market so they had to branch out to promote. BTS are very diverse from doing rock hip-hop EDM rap ballads Latin Pop and they want to do all the time it's a stylistic choice but if you want to they're known for having amazing live performances I would recommend tomorrow from their school love affair album the live performance has English captions

Someone is trying to set you up for a whole lot of hurt! 😂😂 There is just so much that is BTS, each person takes away something different from others, personally I love Black Swan for the back ground story as well as the theatrical side and also the song itself. Most of BTS songs have a story line behind them as well as a story line running between albums. If it isn't your cup of tea we won't hold that against you. I would recommend Festa Room Live 2021 as well as Proof live, a lot of their songs are done live as well as a lot of dancing while singing. Their stage productions are amazing! Wow! Well, Black Swan was my intro to BTS and I loved it. I have Never heard anything like it. Like the movie, it has to do with fearing the first death of losing the ability or passion to sing or dance anymore and that death being worse than the real death. Anyway, I'm way down the BTS rabbit hole now. If you want to hear them with a Live Band, a few things come to mind: 1) Tiny Desk Concert NPR Music - they did 3 songs (one of their more Poppish songs (Dynamite - in all English), Save Me and Spring Day, 2) FESTA Room Live 2021 - a medley of mostly B-side songs - just them singing and vibing (both of these were in Pandemic timeframe), and 3) for just the 4 in the vocal line I recommend House of Cards Live with English Subtitles, or The Truth Untold. A BTS Japanese song - Your Eyes Tell - is all 7 just standing and singing and it's beautiful. Tons more - MicDrop, Fake Love, DNA, Idol, Fire, Dope, ON Kinetic Manifesto Film Coma Prima, Blood Sweat & Tears, UGH, Ddaeng, Outro: Tear.... Some of their songs have interpretation videos by others so we can understand Korean word play in them (e.g. Ddaeng and UGH interpreted by DKDKTV), or deeper meanings (like in Spring Day interpreted by an Italian ARMY).

I feel like other ARMY have made lots of solid points about the depth of the lyrics and what makes BTS special so I’ll just comment on harmonies. As far as I know, there aren’t any BTS songs with 7 part harmonies - mostly they do two part or maybe three part harmonies. I think what’s more interesting about BTS is the juxtaposition of voices. They tend to do really high high notes and then follow with someone singing/rapping in lower register. I find this really interesting but I can understand if it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Personally, I find that I only like one or two songs from famous US artists in their album or anywhere else for that matter. Also, I'm not a fan of any MV music so much - I actually prefer to watch live vocals so I watched almost all of BTS' award performances such as MAMA, Melon Music Awards, etc. That's how I got blown away by BTS. In addition, with BTS, you don't just fall in love with their music or their performances, but also who they are as people.

12:50 - I think this is where the disconnect starts. You seem to want to fit BTS into this "boyband" box, and because they're a super-popular group who breaks records, you expect them to show you super-unique feats that you categorize as boyband traits, like harmonies. But BTS is not your typical "boyband". Instead of expecting BTS to be something they're not, something you want them to be, why not appreciate them for what they are? Like, if you want seven-part harmonies, why not listen to groups like Pentatonix or Voctave? BTS have three rappers and four vocalists, why expect rappers to do seven-part harmonies? I would expect the rappers to deliver amazing flows and original lyrics, and that's what they excel at. And this combination of rap and song is what attracts many fans. They are also skilled dancers in their own right. They're not just singers who dance. Their choreography is sharp and powerful, or artistic and expressive, like this one, or fun and playful, whatever the song demands. And, of course, the lyrics. Their debut song "No More Dream", when most of them were teens, asked their fellow Korean youth, what's their dream. Their next lead single, "NO", criticized the Korean education system. In their latest group album "BE", released during the pandemic, they take us on a journey of emotions, aptly conveying feelings of depression and helplessness we all felt, the pressure to be productive because we have so much time in quarantine, but also hopeful at the same time, that this will eventually pass and that our connection with our loved ones doesn't change. In their album before that, "Map of the Soul" duology, they explore parts of the soul as laid out by psychologist Carl Jung: persona, shadow, and ego. They share their inner selves with us. What Western boy band have rappers, have this high level of dancing skills, and talk about meaningful things like these in a majority of their songs?

Thank you for your honest reaction, I really appreciate it. I hear you in your "wish to love them" and find a very special unique sound but as I'm not a musitian myself I could not help with that. The only I could do is to share my personal experience of coming to love BTS. I think what makes them stand out for me is multiple layers in their artwork. In interviews BTS themselves state they do not work in a specific music genre but rather create a concept which includes music, dance, performance, make up, etc. So assessing the song from a musical perspective is just one layer which when combined with other elements could become something different and convey a great message. An example of this could be their song Blood, Sweat and Tears which from lyrical perspective is not impressive at all (at least for me) but when combined with MV references turns into a very deep message. The same goes for Spring day which lyrics get a different meaning when combined with MV (for this the explanation video is required). Also they do not hide that they get an insiration from other artworks, so you could find a lot of references to books, musicals, paitings, installations and even films in their song and/or MVs. So basically you could dive as deep as you want with almost any of their song. You could just find the sound you vibe towards, or you could explore the lyrics message, or you could reflect on the meaning hidden in MV, or you could find an insiration sources and references to actual artworks in order to process these youself and then link your thoughts and reflection to the BTS song. Or even get inspired and create something yourself! And whatever you chose is fine as it depends on your own unique way of approaching the art. And I personally really like it. I like that by listening to one BTS song I could find 5-6 new artists I've never heard before. I like how respectful they are towards other artists, how they try to encourage their fans to discover new names and just keep eyes open. Another reason why I love them is they are have really great public image. I wouldn't say they are 100% perfect but they are definitely role models for a lot of people in their responsible yet passionate approach to life. I wouldn't speculate how real this image is as I obviously are not familiar with them off-camera but I appreciate the amount of effort they had to spent ni order to create and maintain such image wheter it became or not part of their off-stage persona. I would be very interested to hear your thought on your way of getting know BTS better if you decide to continue your journey. Thanks and all the best!

It would be great if you came with an open mind next time and listen and watch without expectations and just enjoy. You missed so many important points about this song: the lyrics, the scene, the visuals, the production, the dance. BTS, as a whole, is ground breaking. I am not sure what you expected from that statement. I love boybands but if the part you liked about them are the 5 part harmonies, then no. BTS is comprised of 3 rappers and 4 vocalists and it's their group dynamics that make them extra special. I am curious to see what your next BTS move is. :) I am hoping for BTS Room Festa Live and make sure you turn on the closed captions.

There is an orchestral version of this song, that was the first time it was released as a single with a dance performance video. I definetly recommend you watch it

What an honest and fun reaction! I understood your attitude to autotune. I also don't like overly processed voices, and am disappointed to hear them in every new song. I must also say that this is probably a stylistic choice - each of them sings excellently even without a microphone at all. Regarding your request, it's hard to recommend something that sounds 'different', when I don't know what you usually expect. In most cases, Black Swan is other people's 'special and different'... :) I think that in such a situation you should tell what is special in your eyes, or watch the FESTA Room Live, and comment on a specific song that you liked. From there it will be easy to continue. have fun!

Great reaction! You'll definitely want to check out their Tiny Desk Concert and their Festa Live. You'll get live vocals and samples of the music they've put out. They aren't just one genre. I'm very impressed by these young men!
