"Is this k-pop, is this k-pop?" my friend this is BTS, BTS is the genre. As a k-pop fan for over 13 yrs, Black Swan imo is by far the most artistic song you'll discover while on your k-pop journey, it's that great that the artistry, substance and etc, could've won itself a grammy if the grammy's listened without prejudice. And the fact it's the best k-pop music video of all time by film directors, cinematographers and etc, it's awesome you got to see and listen to this masterpiece, live performances is also a must when discovering their music so pls keep that in mind, they're monster live performers.

@@KARIAP KPop is full of incredibly talented and skilful performers, singers and writers, but BTS has taken everything they do to another level of meaning with total consistency and commitment. They themselves describe their genre as KPop, and their work shares many characteristics, providing a holistic experience for the fan, in a way that is foreign to many western artists. But, for me, like many others, when a western person uses the term Kpop, they have a specific image of happy, unchallenging, bubblegum pop - and that is what we challenge when we say BTS is BTS, not KPop. Other Kpop artists produce challenging work too, but nothing like as consistently as BTS, and none of them perpetually re-invent and explore themselves in this way.

You totally get it. This song is inspired by a quote of Martha Graham that says : "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful". So they are actually talking about their fear to lose their passion for music and dance. Jimin's solo dance (the one with blue hair) is actually interpreting that 'first death' as he start to struggle dancing on stage and ends up lying on the floor.

  • @christinacaisip1869

This is one aspect of Kpop. BTS is known for being incredibly diverse with their music. It's unfortunate that when people hear the term 'kpop', they associate it with just 'pop' but it's more than that and I wish people were more open to listening to it more because it really does surprise you. This particular song talks about the sense of losing their passion for music and when that happens, they would consider it their first death. I do highly recommend that you listen to more of BTS songs such as Ugh! if you're into rap, as well as their Cyphers Parts 1-4 and even Outro: Tear. But they dabble into a bit of rock such as Dionysus and so many more. They also have solo songs that you might want to check out. I do hope that you continue to listen to BTS as they are very diverse with their music and I'm sure you'll end up finding something that you resonate with and truly enjoy. Besides how diverse their discography is, the lyrics they have are really well put as they talk about social issues, loving yourself and so many more.

So it's amusing that you'd mention blood sweat and tears.......you should definitely watch Blood, Sweat, & Tears by BTS. XD The more you explore with BTS the more you'll fall in love(or at least I hope) so far you seem extremely enthusiastic to explore them a little bit. I love that you enjoyed the song so much and that you completely grasped the theme of the song. It definitely goes hand in hand with black swan and the idea of how a ballerina dies 2 deaths; once when they can no longer dance and that one is considered worse than their actual death. So in the same aspect having a musician lose their ability to connect to music....I can't even imagine how much that could destroy someone. I hope they never lose their love of music. Thank you for reacting! 💜💜

The main message of the song: "Do your thing" (this is also the first lines of the track in general). The song talks about the life of creative people and how important it is for them to continue living their business, not to stop and not be subjected to imaginary criticism from the outside - not to lose heart. The whole song is inspired by a quote by Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing, and this first death is much more painful." That's what the guys are singing about: how, having become well-known stars and celebrities, they can lose love for their work, thereby losing themselves. They seem to remind themselves, listeners, and, of course, their fans that the most important thing in creative work is creativity, not fame and popularity. You should always remember what you are doing and for whom (of course, the emphasis is on the fact that you are doing all this only for your own satisfaction). It is impossible to let fame, wealth and almost intangible success overshadow the most important goals of your creative path. For both dancers and singers, the first death is the loss of interest and love for their own works, for their work: the loss of passion and the impulse to create - that's what really scares the most popular group in the world. This sensual and emotional song can be fully considered as a confession and a kind of confession of the guys, because they openly talk about their fear of losing themselves. The attitude of BTS to their own creativity, understanding of the essence of music, dance and art in general, self-criticism and criticism from the outside - these are the fundamental problems raised in the song "Black swan". Many viewers, especially those who know most of the structure of the k-pop industry, also noted the unusual approach of the band to the visualization of the song: none of the guys appeared in the music video. But who were the faces of the release of this song then? Real dancers. Real creative personalities, not associated with the name BTS. In this way, the guys wanted to show that this fear, which they sing about, haunts all creative people, not just them. The fear of losing your "I" is what worries many people.

BTS debuted in 2013 as a Hip Hop Idol group (under the K Pop umbrella), and they are known for crossing and fusing so many different genres. They have 3 rappers and 4 vocalists. I do have a slight dilemma, they have over 300 songs and I want to post some really good ones, but I haven't come across any that aren't really good, so I'm probably going to post 10 recent songs (2019-2021). I appreciate you having an open mind to Kpop and starting with the leading group, with BTS. ARMY will guide you through this musical discovery, but here are the basics: with the exception of their 3 all-English songs, always have your captions on. They are nothing like American boy bands since they are known to fuse multiple genres into one song (i.e. EMD, Rap, hip hop, R & B, Disco, Pop, Kpop, Latin Pop, Funk Rap, Emo Rock, Urban, Moombahton Trap, Light Dubstep, etc.they are often referred to as their own genre). On the surface, their songs always have a sick beat, amazing choreo, but always have some meaning behind them (i,e. political, social, psychological, personal, etc.) They are -award-winning artists (internationally) and have broken numerous records (including Guinness). There are also many fanmade videos about their background, I suggest you start there to get to know who they are as individuals (3 rappers, 4 vocalists). Welcome to the BTS rabbit hole!

This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist. "The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music." [Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating no more listening to music Tryna pull up Time seems to have stopped Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of [RM] If this makes me cry no more If you can't make my heart tremble more How could I ever die like this But what if that moment’s right now right now Ps:Black Swan is my favorite song. When I had to end my 25-year career as a contemporary dancer, I felt the same way, and this song comforted me.

I would like to put in perspective how talented the rapline is (so is the vocal line but it is no lie that they are the most involved in the production of their songs). Not only are they very much capable of writing fire ass rap songs (which u will soon discover HOPEFULLY in their solo mixtapes) but they also write such beautiful ballads for the vocal line and the group. For example, RM (leader, the 2nd guy who did the 1st verse) wrote Serendipity for Jimin (the one who did most of the contemporary dance in this video) and Singularity for V (the one who did the first jump jump jump part xD). Don’t get me wrong, these aren’t the only ones they’ve done. BTS has more than 200 songs in their discography and they are very much involved in the writing, composing, and producing in their projects. This is what really made BTS stand out compared to other Kpop groups bc the CEO of their company (BigHit) gave them a lot of creative freedom in their music. Though they went through the traditional trainee system before the group members were selected, the only thing the CEO asked of them once they were chosen was to create music that was genuine. BTS themselves have been very passionate from the start and it was always their choice to stay in late in the studio and the practice rooms. Of course, BTS still has a team of mentors to criticize and help them improve on their work but it’s still their heart put into their songs 😭 I honestly have so much more to say but I think this is where I’ll stop for now bc you’re going to be so overwhelmed xD

As hyped as you are for this song and video, you have only scratched the tiniest bit of the surface. They span every genre and their lyricism is unmatched. Their back catalog is 300+ songs over the 8 1/2 years since they debuted so the rabbit hole is deep but if you let yourself fall in, I PROMISE it’s worth it. I’d love to see you react to “ON: kinetic manifesto film” next. That song also has a regular music video but the kinetic one is 100% the one to start with. Also, if you are interested in the dancing specifically, they put out dance practice videos for many of their songs. (“Practice” is a silly word in this context because their moves are perfection) When you see the choreo separate from the music video you’ll get a whole other level of appreciation for their artistry. They are truly next level in every imaginable way. Black Swan dance practice: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mIiHk8x6mLq2kto.html Edit to add that yours is one of the best first reactions to BTS I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see your next video!

Yes, you got the message of the song right. You should keep reacting to BTS coz you have no idea how wide their discography is! BTS write, compose and produce their own song and Bang PD (Big Hit’s CEO) allows them to express their thoughts and emotions through their music that’s why BTS is their own genre since they don’t restrict themselves to 2 or 3 genres only and they always try or experiment on new sounds. Plus, you always have to understand the lyrics coz it’s more than meets the eye.

Most of the huge KPOP groups have the best music videos in part because they use practical effects most of not all of the time. As in, the locations, sets, props, explosions, fire etc are all real, not CGI. In this video even the dancing shadows are practical. They were really dancing behind then lit by a spotlight

OMG, you get it! Haha - when you run through the video again to check out the lyrics - you really get the gist of the song. This song references Martha Graham - “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” - you got it when you talk about them losing passion for music. That will be their first death. Look forward to your subsequent reaction.

I really appreciate you going back to understand the lyrics. I found many reactors saying they like the song but didn't bother to understand it, and while some people prefer to only enjoy a song for the sake of enjoying it, this song has a deep meaning that I feel sad when people don't appreciate it's lyrics as well. They are geniuses in writing, so their lyrics are definitely a big part of their success. You wouldn't get the full experience without knowing their lyricism.

Once you found BTS, you won't stop listening to them. They're a group that differs from 'KPOP' because they produce, write and compose their own songs. They're very involved in creating their content. Without dragging other groups but the reality is that BTS is different and over time you'll understand why. It's good that you gave them a chance, people often prefer to ignore or make fun of them for being Korean, for being asians. And if they and us do not give up and continue to invite more people to abandon their prejudices and listen to them with an open mind, is cuz we believe that there're no limits for music, not even language can stop music from being good. If you wanna know more about them, you can watch "THIS IS BTS" and "THIS IS BTSARMY" and you'll understand much more about why they are so loved by millions around the world. After that, you can react to different videos and songs because if there is something that characterizes BTS, it is their musical quality and variety 🙌🏼😊

This is definitely K-pop. The song was inspired by a quote from Martha Graham. Martha Graham was an icon of American dance. She was a dancer and choreographer who founded her own style of modern dance that changed the genre entirely and is still taught worldwide. The quote is: "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” BTS members were inspired by this to write this song about their fear that they might lose their passion and love for music one day. It is one of the reasons that they filmed the video in the Los Angeles Theatre and it features so much of Jimin performing modern dance - which he was trained in before becoming a member of BTS.

So much symbolism is folded into each of BTS' emotive choreographies, but the routine in the art film by MN Dance Company visualizes the meaning and tension within "Black Swan." There are seven dancers for the seven members of BTS, where one seems to represent the "swan," constantly feeling shackled and pushed down by the others around him. A cage of light even appears halfway through the dance, further establishing the swan's inability to escape the darkness that binds him.

This song is so well written and and brilliant. There is a quote by famous dancer Martha Graham--"Every dancer dies twice, one is when they stop dancing and the first death is worse than the second". So this song is them singing from the perspective of losing their love and how it would be death to them. And Black Swan is a play on the movie of the same name about ballet dancers. The use of the theatre because of Swan Lake, the ballet Every thing about this is incredible and deliberate
