He put the chill in cool. He toured Australia just as Silk Degrees was breaking. One of the best concerts ever. The whole band was decked out in white, amps were hidden behind white sheets, white backdrops... and the lighting guy had a blank canvas to work with. And Boz and the band blew us away.

The album Silk Degrees was notorious for its funk, soft rocking, jazzy, mellow vide in the mid-7o's. It spawned 3 singles that kept it on the radio and dance clubs for a solid 2 years. Boz Scaggs also scored later with BREAKDOWN DEAD AHEAD and LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO ME. The song had been used in commercials which is why it's familiar to you. Now I have one for Asia to sing to BJ. Because the sentinel is right and it suits her vocal range. The song is by Gladys Knight and the Pips and it it called, NEITHER ONE OF US. And for that little bit of funk for your soul listen to YOU GOT THE LOVE by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. Enjoy.

This is the great, GREAT Jeff Porcaro on drums, one of the most recorded drummers in history. He's the drummer on "Beat It," for crying out loud. Last week was the 30th anniversary of his passing - he died too young at 38. To hear more of him grooving his ass off behind Boz Scaggs, check out "Jojo." It's a song about a pimp in a mink coat that sounds exactly like a pimp in a mink coat out for a stroll.

Such a cool guy with so much talent surrounding him too. His musicians are all top notch and so are “ his girls “.

Per Songfacts the song is about a girl who doesn't appreciate what her man gives her. The "dirty lowdown" is the honest truth - what Scaggs is encouraging this poor sap to face. The word "Lowdown" was popular slang meaning a summary of what's going on for real. The first Hot 100 entry with the term in the title came in 1969 with the instrumental "Lowdown Popcorn" by James Brown (#41, 1969). Next came Chicago's song "Lowdown" (#35, 1971.).

You've probably heard this one before guys; it's NEVER been off the radio, never forgotten. It's too good for that. Paiche on keyboards, Porcaro on drums, Hungate on that in-your-face bass - those guys eventually formed a little band called TOTO ("Africa", "Rosanna", etc.) Meanwhile, Boz - who knew good musicians when he heard them - sounds like the smoothest 70s m'fer ever. That dirty Lowdown! You can smell the Brut cologne and see the gold crucifix twinkling in the chest hair all the way from here.

Steely Dan was my first high school experience (73-76) and I loved them the moment I heard them, and it made me very picky as a music listener. Then I heard Boz Scaggs, and Fleetwood Mac, and I followed their path of sound at the same time. As a child, my Grandparents played Traditional Slavic music as musicians, which is very unique sounds so I was prepped since birth with a good ear for music. My Parents were from the Big Band era and while in high school - my oldest sister was a singer and married a classical 12-string guitarist from Spain in their band in Spain. I didn't know how blessed I was in the 1970s with this foundation of expansive music, good for the body and soul. I couldn't stand the cheap pop or he-man macho music of the 1980s and had to wait until the 1990s music to enjoy the sounds, rhythm, and atmosphere again.

This takes me back to my first high school dance. Sure, there was a lot of disco ("Do the Hustle"), but imagine also Aerosmith "Walk This Way" (the original), Earth Wind & Fire "Shining Star", Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody", Stevie Wonder "Sir Duke" and this cool jam! There was a little something for everyone.

You could pick any song from this album, Silk Degrees, and not be disappointed, but Lowdown is, in my opinion, a perfect song. If the groove does not get you moving, check your pulse, and Boz's vocals are just like the album name - silk. I loved seeing you both move and groove to this song - it made it that much more enjoyable!

The song is basically a mix of old R&B and disco. The drums and bass are definitely disco. Louie Shelton has a video on KZread explaining his lead guitar parts.

This song is a typical style of music from that time. R&B. slow jam with a little Funk, percussion. A group I remember that fits that style, was Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, they had a little more horns throw in ala Tower of Power. One song I remember in particular was ^Wonderful Girl^ done by Jack Mack, same groove as Lowdown.

Hi Asia & BJ, You guys hit the jackpot with this track, because "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs is such a smooth & soulful "JAM" from the 70's!!! And I'm telling you that when this song first came out and it was played at the clubs & parties, the dance floors got packed with people groovin' to this masterpiece!!! Once again, "Soul" has no color, it is something that you either have it or you don't...Plain & Simple...Mic Drop!!! 🎤

Asia and BJ... You liked that drumming in Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgeting"? This is the same drummer (Jeff Porcaro) playing for the Boz in this song. He' was the drummer for the band Toto (in fact the Boz is using 3 Toto band members in this song).

This was a real crossover hit when it came out. Honestly, it’s almost more disco than anything else - but was just a stone groove. I can listen to it over and over. And those super hip, lowdown lyrics! Just too cool.

Asia/B.J..Y'all see that musician line-up? Toto's Paich and Porcaro, Session bassist Hungate, (Stevie Wonder, George Benson) Backup singers Willis and Johnson ( Steely Dan, the Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd...) Can't go wrong with that in-studio if ya tried!! (Silk Degrees won the Grammy that year for best LP) Lots of bands did the blue-eyed soul in the 70's, but Boz was silky smoother than all of 'em, baby!
