I feel like it's a little too much. Like, I'm not against it or anything, but it's starting to feel like something they focus on way too much. I mean, they literally made an album with the sole purpose of being inane and corny (that should be the real title) to fit into the "lore", not that they couldn't have done an album that was "mindless" in a good way, but they clearly sacrificed end product for the "message". And like half of this track is just callbacks

@@pizzzaeater1425no I fully agree with this person. I remember being so excited to see how they tied Scaled and Icy into the lore… and I understood it was supposed to be bland on purpose… but like… you’re also a musician? I don’t know. It goes against the nature of the artist/listener connection. And not in a subversive meaningful way. They essentially sacrificed an album for the plot. I love it in concept but people spent money on songs and tickets to watch lackluster music performed like when they’re capable of better. That being said, I haven’t been as excited for an album like this in a while. My expectations are so unbelievably high.

@@bandito6678absolutely agree. I listened to them when I was 14-15 but then I stopped. And when Scaled And Icy came out I was just very disappointed because I expected something similar to Trench. But when this came out I felt all the nostalgia. And now almost 20 years old I gotta say that I feel the same way about the band like Brad do though I think Blurryface isn't that bad but still not nearly as good as Trench. I still don't get how people don't understand why SAI was made when Tyler pretty much explicitly said that they didn't want to make another heavy album like Trench immediately following it - especially considering the year that SAI was released - and so that Tyler could just go back to the basics of song writing and structuring all while adding in pretty cool lore components into good easy listening songs.

WELCOME BACK TO TRENCH
Twenty one pilots probably didnt want to drop a heavy dark pop album during a global pandemic, so they changed the lore a bit to have an excuse to have sai to be poppier and more acessible, its a little part of their career that just exists, it is important but feels more like a record that was made without minding anything besides making fun little songs
i may not agree with all your takes on their sound, but i do really appreciate you actually taking the time to understand the lore and providing the information to people. i watched through the full 2/3 hour long video with the people who explained the full lore at that time a few weeks ago, and found it very helpful so thank you. also im obsessed with this song

@sammieslaterjr.8982

@@mensatico Exactly the same for me. Had a phase during my teens, got out of it, then Trench dropped and hooked me back in, and to this day I still come back to it on occasion. I have a shitton of respect for it, especially the production and the seamless genre-mashing with a pop framework, (reminds me of Gorillaz in a way,) how it's wildly varied but also homogenous and immersive with its sound. Seems to have become one of those albums I can get something out of in every phase of my life. TOP managed to put together something special with Trench, and I'm hoping they'd do it again (or at least get close to it.) The single isn't quite at that level (especially compared to Jumpsuit,) but it's close enough to get my hopes up for the new record.

Paul Meany is co-producer on all of the songs from Trench, Saturday, and Redecorate. And now Overcompensate. The black sheep is Saturday, but there’s a 3rd producer that probably took most of the lead on it. So yeah Paul Meany helps make the best Top music.

Wow I did not expect you to like it as much as I did. Glad to see.
I don't get why everyone is so disappointed with this tracklist when many of their last track names also sound weird (Pet Cheetah, Kitchen Sink, Nico and the Niners)
I think they did Scaled and Icy because they preferred to keep this new album to themselves til now that we are no longer in a pandemic. So SAI was just to not have a 5-6 years hiatus you know. Cause it was supossed that we get this era like on 2021, but it wouldn't fit, really

I don't know if you're pretending to not understand this, but Scaled and Icy was obviously never supposed to be bad because of the lore, and nobody ever claimed this. It was supposed to be happy sounding because of the lore. Besides a few songs I also don't think that album is very good. I am definitely critical of their work, but as I have been a fan for years now I have a pretty good view of the full context around the band, and I appreciate what they were trying to do. It's a pretty big diversion from their usual stuff, and things like the livestream experience really added a lot to it. For me it is more of a bonus album though. Tyler has talked about the fact that he had been working on different music during that time, but he thought people needed something happier during the pandemic (I know that might sound ridiculous to some of you, since you think the music sucks, but a lot of people still get enjoyment out of it, which is great for them). I am personally not sure if the album would have even existed if it wasn't for the pandemic. It definitely wouldn't have existed in its current form. Anyway, my theory as to why they chose to make Scaled and Icy is because there was no guarantee that touring would even be possible in the near future. This is something Tyler definitely wouldn't have wanted for something like the ending of the Trench/Dema storyline. But they care a lot about their fans, and they still wanted to put something out. So my guess is that Tyler thought it would be the perfect time for something different.
Brad used to look like young Anakin, now he's Post Malone.
