I’ll tell a great story. This was about 25 years ago maybe 30 . The band had changed a lot Greg was surly there and I think Dicky Bets . You know that ABB brings in a lot of bikers and there a group there. One girl was dancing 💃 jumping and singing during the warm up, and the exact minutes the band started she passed out missed the whole performance 🎭

BTW: Gregg said they were all laughing cause Duane (I think) just scored some cocaine across the street and they reacted. Most believed that it was NOT addictive back then. Then crack came along, a derivative of it and highly addictive. I got a few stories, but I was a straight arrow kid then, about 18. Imagine seeing the ABB at Red Rocks Ampitheater in Denver. Two virtuoso lead guitarists in Dickey & Duane, with Barry Oakley on base, Greg on keys & Butch & Jai Johnny on drums, the could play the blues or flat out jam with anybody. It was a tragedy to lose Duane & then Barry a year later, but this music will be heard forever.✌️❤️🎶

Everything falls together in a way it can't in the studio. These guys were really on a level of their own and this album captured that perfectly. It's crazy how I keep coming back to it. I always have a hard time, when people in music call somebody the best. THERE IS NO BEST! I can accept when people put an IMO in their comment, but other than that, it doesn't make any sense. Everybody's taste is different and for example if my son and I like 9 bands very much, the opinion might go apart about the tenth. The other day somebody wrote : comparing different bands to each other is like comparing apples and oranges 😆 So let's continue to listen to ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS EVER 😂🤘

Hello from Macon Georgia the adopted home of the Allman Brothers and one of the birthplaces of southern rock in the early 70s. I was lucky enough to see them live many times. They're a jam band at heart and could turn a 5 minute song on an album into a 25 minute live masterpiece. Duane Allman ( guitar prodigy, they called him Skydog ) got killed not long after this was recorded in a motorcycle wreck. Gregg ( singer, piano ) just died a few years ago.

Fillmore East is by far the best live album ever. Two drummers, two great guitarists, and a love of the blues is tough to beat. "You don't love me", the perfect song that drives you into the oblivion that happens between men and women. The duel between Duane and Dickie Betts is classic electric blues with Gregg's organ driving the rhythm. I heard this album in a dorm room back in 71 for the first time. It never gets old.

The keyboards are played by Greg Allman who is also the singer and is mostly a Hammond B 3 organ. The guitar solos are usually Duane Allman, one of the best guitar players EVER, taking the first crack, often on slide guitar, and then Dicky Betts, another great guitarist rounding out the song. And yes, Berry Oakley on bass is the secret sauce that brings it all together and drives it relentlessly forward. Not to fail to mention the damn near impossible to understand subtle interplay of not one, but TWO drummers who not only don't get in each other's way but actually COMPLIMENT what the other is playing.

In a very spooky and sad coincidence, bassist Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle accident just over a year after Duane Allman was killed in the sa!e manor and only about 600 yards from one another.

Top notch musicians, a legendary line up just making music for the music. I'am looking forward to my favorit song Whipping Post on side 2. The famous Tedischi Trucks Band is still carrying the legacy of this band with former member and slide guitarist Dereck Trucks and the enigmatic singersongwriter/guitarist Susan Tedeschi in front. Their band is world class. You should try them sometime. Fine reaction, thanks.

This album, along with Eat A Peach (you have got to do the whole Eat A Peach, as well... it is partially a continuation of the Fillmore East album) I have just been entranced with for many many years.... since they came out, basically.... NEVER gets old..... but YOUR REACTION made it very similar to hearing it for the first time.... well, maybe the 2nd time, because it was hard for me to really understand how big of an impact they would have on my life... it is unexplainable, really lol. I want to thank you for that.... you are a true energy and music lover, and you were glowing on this one ;)

Agreed. I still don’t understand how watching Verdy listen to a 50-year old album can evoke such vivid memories, but it does. She ‘gets it’. We were lucky to grow up with such great music.

I always wanted to sing like Gregg. Such raw power and soul. Paired with Duane's wicked slide, oh mama! My first ever love concert was The Gregg Allman Band at Winterland in '74. Got pretty ripped on hash but I still remember some of it. 😂

Thanks ,Miss Verdy for reviewing one of the greatest live albums of all time. There will never be another band that will play like that. Their musicianship will never be matched. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to see the band before Dwayne and Berry died. I did see them, 5 times. I miss the Allman Brothers.

This is one of those albums you listen to over and over just to follow the individual instruments. Or better yet just get up and dance to. The Fillmore East was in NYC, and the Fillmore West was in SF. The bands that played at both venues are quite diverse and (most times) very famous.

This is one of the best live albums ever recorded and it has the classic original band members, prior to the start of the deaths and infighting. The first guitarist you heard doing the short slide guitar solo at the beginning of Statesboro Blues was Duane Allman, who was very innovative and probably the best slide guitarist in the world. He unfortunately died in a motorcycle accident at only 24 y/o and then the bassist, Berry Oakley, also died in a motorcycle accident almost exactly one year after Duane and about 1000 feet from the site of Duane's accident on a parallel street (he was also 24 y/o). I can't imagine how much better both of them would have become as musicians if they hadn't died at such a young age. They had several different line-ups of the band members over the years, some much better than others, but I think the last line-up of the band (prior to breaking up due to Gregg Allman's death in 2017) was as great as these original members and it featured the great guitar duo of Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes (Derek Trucks essentially taking the role of Duane Allman and Warren Haynes taking the place of original member Dickey Betts, who was kicked out of the band many years ago mainly due to drinking, but there was also allegations of domestic violence). Derek Trucks was a child prodigy on guitar and he's probably the greatest living slide guitarist. He currently plays in the Tedeschi-Trucks Band, which he started with his wife, Susan Tedeschi, who is a phenomenal blues/soul singer. If you have never heard them, I would definitely recommend checking out a couple of their videos.

Another old guy checking in here. It really warms my heart to see such appreciation from the younger generations. Verdy, you really get it. Blues is where it started, and blues will be where it ends. Maybe it's me, but why is the sound quality of this album, recorded live over 50 years ago, better than the sound of today?
