Watching And listening to him in this music video is Erie. My best friend met him just a few months before tragedy struck (just outside 24hr fitness in PCH Torrance. A gym I go to after work). May he Rest In Peace. #legend

    And that's also why they used a woman as an example because at that time it wasn't okay to talk about male problems and be accepted. Which was also a struggle for him and most others. This band saves lives. It's sad chester took his but they saved lives. Great people are not guaranteed a pass or life without struggle. Chester proves that. Everyone's human. RIP chester. Aye. I found this song for the first time in 2008, right when I began my journey of healing from a childhood of sexual abuse. At the time I didn't know Chester's story, but so many of his songs reached right down into the very depth of my heart and soul and touched the hurting wounded places in ways that only a fellow survivor would understand. I knew instinctively long before I knew his story that he had been in the places I had been and experienced those things. There is no other way to write about it in such a way if you haven't been there. Here it is 2022, almost 15 years since that journey started and I can say and testify, that healing IS possible. It's not an easy road and yes it will always be apart of me, but the damage it did has been lessened and in some places put to rest.

  • @TearsOfLa
    @TearsOfLa4 жыл бұрын

    Its not that his perception is that wounds dont heal, its a song about victims of abuse. Their perspective a lot of the times is that there is nothing they can do about the abuse that they face, or that the marks on them are part of the process of helping their abuser get better. "Against my will I stand beside my own reflection. It's haunting how I can't seem to find my self again, these walls are closing in." Victims of abuse can lose a sense of self and their world revolves around their abuser and what will make them happy(make them not hit you for a few more hours). "crawling in my skin(discomfort at the situation) these wounds they will not heal(cant get away from the situation, the wounds will come back again), fear is how I fall(get knocked down and stay there out of fear) confusing what is real(losing yourself in the situation).

    You can also view this song from the perspective of depressions. Crawling in my skin (being in your mind the whole time) These wounds they will not heal (depression never really goes away) Fear is how I fall (fear is what brings you down, the fear of what you might do, the fear that you'll affect others by doing/becoming something you shouldnt) Confusing what is real ( Not sure what im thinking is real or not) Thesres something inside me that pulls beneath the surface, consuming, confusing (Depression is fatigueing, and its always there, in the background) This lack in self control i fear is never ending, controlling, how i cant seem to find myself again, my walls are closing in (i cant control my mind anymore, this will go on forever, and i cant seem to be myself anymore, depression is taking its tall on me) Ive felt this way before, so insecure!!!! Discomfort endlessly has pulled itsself upon me, distracting, reacting (Depression never really leaves you, its always there, ready to strike) Against my will I stand beside my own reflection, its haunting , how i cant seem, to find myslef again, my walls are closing in, ive felt this way before, so insecure!!!! (Not wanting to be who you are, you can't seem to figure out what is happening to you, but you know it's wrong, depression striking all the time and taking it's tall on you)

    It really makes you think. I watched an interview with Chester that took place, not too long before the suicide, and he said something that really made me go "Fuck" He said something along the lines of "I cannot be alone with my own thoughts inside my head. Its not healthy for me." You can seriously see that in some of these songs.

    "I'm confused." You have to be paying attention to the whole video to get the end. The girl at the end looking in the mirror starts the video in the same place, but crying, covered in in heavy makeup. Visually, it's implied that an older man is sexually abusing her. We see him come in, then he gets dressed and walk out. She goes to school. She's got the piercings and the makeup and black clothing. She's made an identity that's off-putting. She doesn't want anyone to get close. The people close to her have betrayed her and you can't risk that. At the same time, their rejection hurts. She's crawling around in her skin, her disguise, her armor. She can't bear to live as herself, but the persona she puts on helps. At the same time, the thing that protects her feelings keep her from healing from the trauma. When you wear a mask for so long, you start to forget what's underneath. You start to believe it. You begin confusing the mask for the reality underneath. The video/song doesn't go into how she overcomes it, but we see the mirrors she uses to craft this persona shatter towards the end. She doesn't need the mask. We see all the heavy mascara and eyeliner running down the drain after she washes it out. The nose ring, which for her was part of the mask, is gone. She can look in the mirror of reality instead of the warped perception of herself she used to have and see her real self and find peace.

    I couldn't agree more with how you broke this down, but I must say I'm sick and tired of everyone making it out to be that goth styles and such are used as a mask to hide. Some of us just enjoy the way piercings and dark makeup and clothing looks. Society is annoying like that.

    Yes, but she is him. She is Chester. The man coming in the room is the drug(s)/addiction. That's why he looks at himself in the mirror... to the line " Against my will I stand beside my own reflection...it's haunting" She is him..his bruised soul... confused soul... with the blackness of addiction running thru her...him. Hence, the black water finally out of her.. her pores...her crying.. her wounds...free from the abuse of the drug. It goes down the drain. At least that's how I see it :)

    You guys are both wrong... the only involvement by any "her" is that there is a woman in the video. It's easy to find... Chester has spoken many times about being abused by an "older male friend" between the ages of 7 and 13. Video takes the artistic license route as far as the woman is concerned. Having said, this song is more about his own personal feelings regarding his relationship with drugs and alcohol (which, to be fair, were clearly related to, if not a direct result of- not only the sexual abuse, but also the bullying and beatings he took in school), and the difficulty of dealing with surface problems (drugs n drink) when there are larger problems (unaddressed and undealt-with abuse and bullying that lead to massive loss of self-confidence and self-worth) lurking in the background, as well as the unshakable feeling that it was all somehow his own fault. I guess I win the internet for longest sentance... sheesh.

    @@craigmoen1430 That's what I love about their music. The songs were written with clear meaning and intention, but they leave the lyrics just impersonal enough that a lot of people can relate to them, even if they're not going through exactly what Chester did. I suppose that's the sign of any great writer.

It ended up being my best performance through high school and it happened right before my last lacrosse game in my high school’s uniform so adding that just made this song have an even more special place in my heart. As someone who always sought out the approval of others, I have always related to this song. It's crushing living your life by how others dictate it. They want you to act a certain way, so you do, they want you to draw a specific thing so you do, they want you to dress in the style they want you in and you do it because you don't want to be a dissapointment to them. And we keep doing it until we lose sight of who we really are. I always thought LP covered a lot of teen anxieties and social pressures in their music. This one I think means that you put up an act until you don't even know who you are anymore..
