I think something that people miss is the fact that the dude is 34 years old now. He’s a grown man with a wife and kids. He’s not gonna have the same energy as he did when he was making TPAB and GKMC. I’ve seen this happen with a lot of really good musicians, they get older and they kind of “mellow” out a little. And this album to me seems like a very reflective album for Kendrick. Whether any of this makes the album good or bad doesn’t really matter, it’s just something to keep in mind

Fax bro. Seeing a lot of mixed reactions but this album is actually really nice. It’s like one big therapy session and it has a bit of everything so you can’t be mad at him for trying something new and still killing it! 🔥 not a perfect album, but definitely a great body of work. As Kendrick said, he is not anybody’s savior and people gotta stop treating him like a god. Yes, he’s insanely talented and perhaps the best artist of our generation, but that doesn’t mean he can’t choose his own well-being over everything else. He talked about this in the last track too and I think he did a great job of conveying different sides of his psyche. Some people just hating for no reason. Was a great album. People just gotta chill out and stop expecting so much from artists who are just people at the end of the day.

Yeah I'm realising that's how I felt until we cry together, I was really struggling with the sound but by track 8 I just went "oh wait, this is supposed to be a new sound, kendrick doesn't do repeats" and that allowed me to enjoy the rest of my first listen alot more and truly love where this album is heading. I stand by that it has a weak start in terms of instrumentation (except for track 1, that's perfect) and in general I think tracks 2-4 could have done better in some small regards which would have made the whole experience alot better, but from track 8 onward it's nothing but art and I love it

I think people are expecting every Kendrick album to be a chapter with a completely unique tone and sonic palette since TPAB and GKMC were so distinct. This album seems like it's doing something different and it feels like he's speaking candidly rather than giving a highly choreographed performance with a strong narrative like those two (even though they're also deep and personal). He has already given us everything that we could ask for in that regard and I think I'd rather have this quiet and heartfelt moment as a nice goodbye than another performative opus.

The fact that Brad had to listen multiple times for the songs he didn't like to hit proves that some hip hop albums aren't to be taken on first listen (or second or third). It takes more than one listen to fully digest everything and for it to completely click.

@@joshuameadows8308I don’t really agree with this. One of the most impactful albums for me was Everywhere At the End of Time, I certainly did not want to listen to music after finishing that. It isn’t something I really ever feel like listening to again, but at the same time lives rent free in my mind. As an enjoyer of classical music, I often want to just sit in silence for an hour after a particularly inspired performance or a moving piece. It’s quite calming to just drown in the catharsis you feel instead of searching for more stimulation. While I didn’t feel this with the new Kendrick album, I understand that sometimes the best pieces of music are made better when they are followed by silence.

This is actually the first Kendrick album I've listened to, so my listening experience is probably pretty unique to most others'. I loved this album upon first listen, I guess I didn't come in with any expectation for what it would sound like. I don't know how this compares to other Kendrick albums, but this is one of the best albums I've ever listened to.

If this is one of the best albums for you then you owe it to yourself to check out his other albums. Section 80,his least best,displays the raw nature of young Kendrick trying to get into the rap game and touching on a couple subjects but not elaborating on it until... Good kid Mad City,arguably a lot of people’s favourite album.Great beats,powerful storytelling and some bangers as well. To Pimp a Butterfly is the greatest Album ever made.Genuinely for me.Takes ALOT of listens to understand everything but you’re rewarded everytime for learning something new. DAMN was his most commercially successful album and has absolute bangers like DNA,Humble etc. Sorry for this long paragraph, hope you do check it out!

You should definitely listen to either good kid maad city or to pimp a butterfly. Both amazing albums, good kid maad city will probably hook you in immediately, and to pimp a butterfly may too, but I fell like that album takes a lot of listens to really take in everything

I've listened to most of his other projects, GKMC being one of my favourite albums ever. This blew me away, destroyed my expectations in such a good way. I completely agree, it's one of the greatest albums I've ever heard.

I honestly love how divisive this album has been just on day one and how many people reverse stance after multiple listens. I was the same. First listen I was like “eh”. But after the second and third listen it really opened up. Theres so much to unpack in this thing and I think that’s what makes K Dot so special

I really believe United in Grief and Mirror are Kendrick’s best intro and outro combination on an album, coming from someone who loves Wesleys Theory and Mortal Man.

I feel like every time he hears a piano he just calls it Hamilton bullshit. The instrument has been used in all types of music including rap and not just broadway rap about 1700s American history.

It’s interesting I fell in love with United in Grief when I first heard it. Die Hard and Rich interlude was kind of meh for me, but everything else on part 1 is really good.

I went into this project with no expectations as I've listen to Kendrick albums before but it's been so long since I've listened to any of them and I was so young when I did that it didn't really build up this reputation for Kendrick that everybody else has of him, so when I heard this album I loved it and every track with a few exceptions (I'm also a fan of the baby Keem stuff that he was doing earlier before this project released as I love it when artists come at things deliberately not playing to their strengths) I'm glad you kept in all the parts that you don't agree with anymore because I feel like this is a prime example of expectations ruining something for you, a genuine first listen, it's very interesting to see this album not sit well with you in a lot of areas and how that developed and why

Listening to this album blaring thru car speakers down an empty highway at 2am was such an ideal first listen. United in Grief just enveloped everything. Chills.

We Cry Together actually made me cry on my first listens, its insanely close to home when it comes to relationships and that repressed anger or resentment that you feel towards someone

I think this review kind of paints a picture to how reaction videos can be so conflicting because a lot of times when you listen to music for the first time you don't love it as much you would after a few listens especially music with as much detail and lyrics packed in as Kendrick's work. It's why I love that Queens of the Stone Age part 2 reaction you did where you had 3 different versions of yourself reacting and it's the beauty of music.

I loved TPaB and GKMC for their narrative throughlines, but I'm glad those don't show up on this album. This album was all about introspection and self reflection, especially when it comes to family, and is easily Kendrick's most personal album to date. Kendrick's reflection on his own flawed upbringing helps inform the change that he wants to create to become a better father and husband. I think those themes would be spoiled a bit if he portrayed himself as the protagonist of a larger, linear narrative with a begining, middle and end, especially since he wants to show how he's still in the process of this personal growth. I love this album for how raw and honest it is, and it's probably going to end up in my top 2 kendrick albums along with TPaB.

I literally listened to it that night, stressful week here too, tension in the family while work implodes. Slept maybe a net 6 hours from monday to thursday. Went out back with my bong at 1am with that album through the sennheisers and had multiple spiritual experiences out there. There was a point where I had a packed up bong sitting there for 3 whole songs because I got pulled in. I cried, man. Melting in gratitude. It was great. And those initial tracks Brad found sonically boring, I also clicked right into. Maybe I was just in that slow mode, but there were all kinds of cool details in those tracks that tailored them closely to the lyrics even though they were rhythmically and melodically 'simple' overall. There are a lot of great little details tossed in the mix, and the production is top quality... like, the fidelity on all of the organic vocals and instrumentation is perfect. Kinda stuff that makes me go "Ooooo.... thass niiiice."

Seeing these reactions I'm just glad the album landed so well for me. I was super hyped and not disappointed at all. All the classic Kendrick qualities are here with just enough new shit to keep it interesting and fresh. The introspective lyrics are devastating and made me cry like four times just on the first listen. It's everything I wanted from a new project.

Brad said once he really started experimenting with new things thats when the project picked up for him, but (besides We Cry Together) I felt like the first 3 tracks were the easily the most experimental on the first half. The beat that was all over the place on United in Grief, the crazy flows on N95, and everything about Worldwide Steppers felt way more new and experimental than a lot of the later tracks.

I love that with how much editing Brad has to do on his videos, he still includes moments of him saying chat sucks even when they aren’t visible

i think it's better then damn, but it's not as amazing as good kid or tpab overall i'd say it's an 8.5/10

Had a similar experience, my first listen was bad, I was in a grumpy mood and expected something different. Only with the second listen I changed my opinion DRASTICALLY.

i feel like once you get over the fact that it sounds different from damn and tpab, the more chill and almost jazzy sound actually sounds pretty good and grows on you

Why were people surprised by this album being jazzy? Tpab is practically just a straight up jazz album. My main problem with this album was not enough jazz.

This is a great album for sure. Haven’t truly fallen in love with it but it’s literally been a single day, it’s definitely going to grow on everyone and will easily be one of the best of the year

love this reaction, my first listen i really didn't get it but now i like it better than DAMN.

Yeah, this album is really good. Not on the level of TPAB (Kendrick will never top that masterpiece), but the production is immersive and cool, and Lamar's rapping is on point.

I got so unbelievably happy when I recognised Duval’s piano on United In Grief

Can’t wait for this album to grow on everyone who doesn’t like it and they start calling it a classic, I think it’s absolutely fantastic and the most I enjoyed a Kendrick album on first listens

this album is very hard to get on first listen, i heard it after only hearing tpab and i was just confused but now its my second favorite album from kendrick

I had to turn the album off when I got to we cry together cause I made the horrible mistake of listening to this album while I was putting together furniture and it was one of the worst projects I ever worked and me being angry at the furniture and hearing them 2 arguing and yelling put me in one of the worst moods I ever had in my life and I ended breaking the drill I was using and I realized I needed to turn the music off and take a break
