First potato reveal of the year, does sulphur make a difference? 🥔

I was hoping to see a higher yield from the potatoes grown in yellow sulphur but on this occasion the yield was slightly less.
The potatoes that I thought might be Charlotte are not, these were a white potato variety, I grew 9 varieties last year.
Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing.🥔❤️👌👍

    Hi Nick, I did the same this afternoon. Tipped out a bucket of Pentland Javelin. They too could have had a few more weeks, but I was impatient to see what they were like. Yours looked very clean and I always think that if there is enough for a meal then its still a good harvest. Hope you enjoyed yours as much as I did mine, this evening? Enjoy your weekend. Take care, Annie 🐞 🐝 🌱

    It would be interesting to see the difference if you added some additional nutrients to the soil along with the sulphur. Maybe there wasn’t a difference as both tubs were starved of nutrition. If they both had everything they needed for optimal growth then you would see if the sulphur made a difference. You still got a nice little harvest though which is always nice 👍🏻

    You said you used potato fertilizer which contains sulphur. Well mine does at least. It is possible what you added took it over the limit and that is why you had slightly less spuds in the sulphur bag. But both lots had sulphur??? I think the real test is how much scab would you have had if you had let them go on further.

  • @nickthegardener.1120

    @nickthegardener.1120

    Hi the potato fertilizer didn't have sulphur in, it was the vitax potato fertilizer. I need to do more tests with more and less sulphur and probably check the pH of each container to see how much the sulphur lowers it. 👍👌🥔

  • @fibber2u

    @fibber2u

    @@nickthegardener.1120 Thanks for that. I'm sorry about the assumption. I used potato fertiliser for the first time this year and it does have sulphur added. The reason was last years scab in some varieties. The thing is my main crop tops have grown to over 4 feet tall and that was not the goal. I know this because I stick 5 foot canes in the middle of all my grow sacks and tubs in order to be able to see where to aim at when watering and I can't see the tops of some canes. Obviously about 18 inches of cane is below the surface. I did still add some Fish Blood & Bone and chicken manure pellets. Next year I think I'll do something similar to what you did with one main crop variety and see which of the three fertilisers works best. My first earlies are still showing bright green foliage and I'm going to delay harvest for a while. Like many men, I like a good big top but in this case I'm more interested in ample bottoms.
