First Opium War - Gunboat Diplomacy - Extra History - Part 3

📜 The First Opium War - Part 3 - Extra History
The British responded to the Chinese halting their ships by erecting a blockade outside Canton. They fired a warning shot to turn back a private British merchant ship, the Royal Saxon, which attempted a blockade run, and the Chinese sent out their own navy to defend the runner. They were demolished. The British had better ships and better firepower. They made to discuss a treaty, but the Chinese refused to give in to the British demands regarding ownership of Hong Kong. The British moved on to capture Chusan, an island near Shanghai. Then a rumor prompted them to believe that China planned to strike against them, so they acted pre-emptively and kicked off the Battle of Chuenpee. Again they won, but the slaughter was so horrifying that Superintendent Elliot was glad to seek a peace treaty with the emperor's envoy, Qishan. Finally, Qishan agreed to give up Hong Kong, to give the British better trade status, in exchange for which Britain returned the land they'd taken. But Elliot's supervisor back in London, Lord Palmerston, felt the treaty didn't go far enough, especially since it didn't re-establish opium trading rights. And the Emperor found Qishan's capitulation disgraceful, even threatened to have him hanged for it. What had looked like moderate wins for both sides suddenly threatened to fall apart.

After he was fired, Charles Elliot was transferred to a post in the Republic of Texas, which was the 1840's equivalent of being transferred to Antarctica. While there he succeed in negotiating a treaty of recognition and peace between Mexico and Texas which was to be guaranteed by France and Great Britain. However, the Texas Congress threw it out in favor of Annexation to the United States.

I've observed a strange phenomena among Asians, particularly women. They appear young well into their 50's, then, when their sons/daughters bear them grandchildren, they shrivel up into old grandmas. It's similar to some Nordic women - I know one lucky woman in her 30's who's daughter is constantly mistaken for her sister.

Look from the British view of the things though. They were superior in terms of technology so a war against the Chinese wouldn't have been too costly for them. If anything , a war was the most profitable way. The Qing got smashed while the Brits got everything they wanted with minimal losses.

I look for more information about Elliot and hey, he is now one of my favourite historical figures. Before arriving China he was involved in the abolition of slavery in Guiana. And after China he tried to abolish slavery in Texas and to make peace with Mexico. He seems like a decent human being, specially considering the age he lived.

Elliot is one of my favorite historical figures covered in Extra History, and this video perfectly encapsulates why. He's not eager to spill blood by any means, but he's also not spineless. Wedged between duty to his country and the ideals of that country, he picks the ideals, but does not entirely betray his duty. He's been put in a shitty position by his superiors and is trying to make the best of it. The British come first in his eyes, but the Chinese are still people. It's rare to see a guy that committed to doing the right thing in the face of so much wrong.

On a state level, people need to be pragmatic above all else. Google Neville Chamberlain. And most people at the time thought he was doing a pretty damn good job >_>

I believe that the shining example of a military officer is men like Captain Elliot. A moral man, who always looks to end the bloodshed quickly. But ALSO is loyal to his country, and more than willing to lead on the frontlines against the foes of his people. Captain Elliot should be honored for being an amazing wartime officer and negotiator, and a man too good for the leaders he had.

To me this series is about cultural differences at their absolute worst. It's a rare case of two countries on completely opposite ends of the globe forced by economics to interact with each other, and nobody knows how. They both think of each other as being vastly inferior savages, and the people that actually understand both sides are expelled for being irrational. You can see this playing out even as early as the kowtow debacle that started things off.

As a Brit, I've heard of the Opium War, but I was mostly ignorant to it. It's not really something we are taught much about in school. Whenever it's mentioned it's usually a brief 'We won, end of story'. Having watched these videos, I can see why it probably isn't taught. It's most likely shame. Not exactly a heroic part of our history. I knew the British Empire was by no means a force for good, but yes, this is certainly not something I can be proud of my history for. I know there were faults on both sides and we shouldn't apply the morals of today to history, but it still stings to hear some of this stuff. Very glad for the video though, it's something that we should know and learn from.

Lord Pent Germany does the exact contrary. They study nazis and communist east germany almost every year and crush any shadow of national pride. Their feeling of guilt and penance is ridiculously oversized, and I find it a bit depressing. And I'm saying it as a french, a country that was at the receiving end of quite a few of their atrocities across History. I don't like excessive nationalism, but the opposite extreme is bad too.

Um Ethan, you're right not to be proud of every aspect of British history, but you do have to remember that that old empire of ours abolished slavery and literally blew up the slave ships of other european powers. It introduced democracy and liberal trade. English Law and language were introduced and indeed without its huge numbers of men we'd probably never have fended off Hitler. So it wasn't bad, and at certain times yes, a force for good.

You should include Queen Victoria's letter to her uncle King Leoppold of Belgium when you do the lies. It illustrates the attitude of the English at home: "The Chinese business vexes us much, and Palmerston is deeply mortified at it. All we wanted might have been got, if it had not been for the unaccountably strange conduct of Charles Elliot ... who completely disobeyed his instructions and tried to get the lowest terms he could. [...] The attack and storming of the [Chuenpee] Forts on the 7th of January was very gallantly done by the Marines, and immense destruction of the Chinese took place. The accounts of the cruelty of the Chinese to one another are horrible. Albert is so much amused at my having got the Island of Hong Kong, and we think Victoria ought to be called Princess of Hong Kong in addition to Princess Royal".

@@SecretOwl2023 You obviously don't know much about chinese history. When ancient china visited south east asia and africa, they didn't invade, they only took them as tributary states (and protected those states instead). It is only between han chinese kingdoms there were many kingdoms, then unified into first Qin dynasty etc. China proper never expanded, it only expanded when mongols invaded china successfully forming Yuan Dynasty, and then later on overwritten again by Han Chinese to form Ming Dynasty, which also helped protected Korean Joseon Dynasty to protect against Japanese Invasion. Only then when many soldiers died to defend the smaller brother state Joseon Dynasty, did Ming Dynasty later on fell to Manchu people again, forming Qing Dynasty. Which reunified China again under the territories claimed by previous Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty to include non-han chinese like Tibetans, Mongols and Manchus etc.

Entertainment and story-based education is much, MUCH better for recall. Don't y'all ever watch the main show. However, don't be fooled. This is of a far narrower scope than even the most restricted history class you ever took. You are learning a single story of a single war. It's a lot easier to give this treatment when you can restrict the scope.

People do not seem to want to learn more, but rather be shown how what they are learning matters and can be useful as well as be taught it in a way that is interesting. So, interest, point, and practicality are all things the current systems of education lack.

One thing that I hope James will talk about in lies, is that the British had hill side upon hill side of tea in India but because the British hadn't seen tea production they didn't realise that is was the same plant. The anecdotal story I remember was that it was only after they had cleared an area of "weeds" in an attempt to cultivate (stolen?) Chinese tea that someone pointed out that the weeds they were clearing were the same plant as they were planting. And that in typical Imperial fashion if took nearly half a century to confirm this.

Pretty much because Gunpowder technology got halted in China as Manchu establish their Qing dynasty. As Manchu are minority tribe ruling over majority Han, things like Gunpowder are threat for their rule considering it is easy for Han people consider Qing as illegitimate and try to overthrow them which would be way easier if Gunpowder tech was as developed as the west.

There is actually a pretty great series from PBS that chronicles the reasons why West got ahead of the rest including China. To put it simply being such a massive and almost indomitable Empire for so long the Chinese got complacent. The country was largely self sufficient had prestige and might and no serious challengers. Britain on the other hand is on a continent full of various states constantly competing and fighting to dominate each other. The Europeans really had no choice, but to constantly keep up the anti and make strides in the realm of science, economics and war to just survive. Another point is that trade, conquest and expansion can often have destabilizing affect on a country from a political, economic and social standpoint. Often the risks of developing wild new technologies and revolutionary ideas far outweighed the benefits especially for the ruling elite. If you look at the history of China after the Opium Wars there is repeated social and civil unrest. The Taiping Rebellion the bloodiest civil war in human history broke out right after the Second Opium War and the Taiping Rebels were followers of this new Christian cult and had many crazy ideas reminiscent of Socialism such as the abolishing of land ownership. The Xinhai Revolution of 1911 was largely inspired by Democratic and Nationalist ideals of Western origin and this was the Revolution that ended Imperial China.

Industrialization, just as in today if your side has superior technology and production capacity you're probably going to win a conventional war. I think another major factor was that Britain had rivals in Europe; France, Austria, Russia, and Prussia who were also industrialized and could threaten them. Thus the British were forced to constantly improve and upgrade weapons technology or risk falling behind. China had no rivals in Asia and no one who could threaten them. They were complacent and did not feel the need to try and constantly upgrade their weapons.

Interestingly enough, Nemesis wasn't actually that well armed. Most of the more conventional frigates around, even many of the Chinese junks had more cannon. Nemesis had the maneuverability and range advantage though. And could pivot her guns to fire while ignoring the direction the ship was sailing. Also despite only having 8 guns, 2 largest were 32lbers. (Somewhere around a 4.5in gun) that were actually fairly small. (many ships would have been armed with 6 or even 8 inch guns. Monitor 30 years later mounted 2 11inch, but was designed for 2 15inch.)

The Chinese just thought they could still negotiate from a position of power? Both sides of the conflict don't look very good in this part of history.
