As an Estes driver that got my license back in June I can say they don’t give you enough training. I did 2 weeks of “school” out of state and drove and practiced pretrips everyday. Didn’t drive on the roads until the second week. After that I got 6 weeks with a trainer. My trainer was awesome and helped me with everything. However had I not come in on weekends to practice driving and my parallel parking I wouldn’t have passed. Luckily I was good friends with most drivers who were as eager to help me as I was eager to learn. Because of them taking the time to help me and me putting in extra time and effort I was able to pass on the first try. That being said I feel like I needed more training.

@@steeljawX you have to take into consideration he may have had a delivery there. That's an Etes truck, they are an LTL carrier. For you "non truckers", LTL stands for less than truckload. I live down a driveway that's a million times worse than that, but it shows up just fine on google maps, and since it's in the desert satellite view makes it all look like it's hardpack flat dirt road. Couldn't be further from the truth. I've lost count of how many delivery drivers I've warned about the driveway and to just park out at the mailbox, call me, and I'll meet them out there. I've only ever had one driver actually do that. Every single other one gets down miles of dirt road and washboard only to see our driveway and see it's not possible, have nearly no place to turn around (always have to bug the neighbors to use their land for a turnaround spot), and then spend the next 45 minutes getting themselves out of a bad situation. I swear man, my driveway has taught many drivers a lesson, haha.

You NEVER drive down a tiny gravel driveway without first getting out and making sure you aren't going to put yourself in a bad situation. This driveway was barely big enough for a 28 ft trailer, much less a 53 ft trailer. I'd expect this from a Swift or Fed Ex driver, now I know we can add this Estes driver to that list. Lolz! 🤣

A little help from an amazing local I'm sure saved a few more headaches. I know that tree that was cut made a pretty good headache for someone XD Excellent work all! I hope the trucker learned from this mistake and can use it as a teaching moment of how to be better on (and apparently off) the road. We all make mistakes, it's only a bad thing if we don't learn from them. I'm sure some embarrassment is probably why he kept messing up more after the crew arrived. If I was the trucker, I'd certainly be flustered and embarrassed and probably doing some of the same mistakes haha!

As a truck driver, I can say I didn't like taking a tractor-trailer into tight spaces, either. I'm surprised the power divider didn't help. I could figure out fairly quickly which company it was, given the color of the truck and the wheels. They're the only company I know of off the top of my head to have that color wheels. That said, I'm surprised the company doesn't have a list of companies they could call for situations like this.

If you get one set of wheels on each axle in a low spot it can still get stuck with the power divider locked. One place I worked had one parking spot for the trucks with two holes in the perfect spot to catch a set of wheels diagonal from each other. If you didn’t back in with enough speed to carry over the holes it’d be stuck. Often funny how little it sometimes takes to get a semi truck stuck, and then other times it seems like they can drive through a lot and not be stuck.

It helps when you have a truck driver that knows how to drive a truck...... I was a heavy-duty tow operator for a number of years...... Looking at this situation myself I would put Blue steel on the left side of the trailer connect the winch to the frame of the tractor..... That would give you a much better geometry pulling the tractor straight back instead of fighting the angle of the trailer...... Also building some Scotch pans would do a lot for keeping your winch truck in place when pulling heavy.... Keep up the good work matt

44 inch tires on a Super Duty? Sounds like an interesting combination. I assume you have at least 4 inches of lift, if not more. You must also be using 4.30 gears (even lower, if the axle's pumpkin can accommodate them). I'd be concerned about the torque finding a weak link, like breaking an axle shaft, U-joint, etc.

  • @LittleRedORR

@@gregparrott yeah its a bit insane! We found a set of 6.17 gears that fit the m300 rear. They can also fit the WTD60 front end. Hoping things wont be a problem until they are haha. We did a 4.5 in lift and still had to modify the frame. Another couple inches would have been nice, as it loses a bit of turning under full articulation.

Matt has had a couple instances where the transfer case popped out of gear and other issues. My thought is that it may encounter excess torque coming from a drivetrain that does not have low enough gears. For rock crawling, some people run gears like 4.56 or even in the 5s with 35" tires and a vehicle with half the weight of the wrecker. Using that for comparison, even gears in the 6s is not low enough for 58" tires and all the extra weight.

Just so you know both axles are always engaged, just like a full time 4wd or AWD. Most trucks do not have full lockers but there is the interaxle lock which is like shifting a full time 4wd system into hi-lock. Unfortunately with tandem axles so close together the touque and any unevenness in the terrain easily unloads tires causing them to spin. The suspension isn't generally designed for articulation

Made it about 50' a sunk all the driver side tires completely in the mud. Apparently the previous owners had cleared the lot and pulled a bunch of stumps in the back yard and filled the holes. I managed to find 2 of those holes at the same time. A large wrecker with a crane on it had to come lift it out of the holes. It looked like it was ready to flip from leaning so hard. AS a truck driver- you should know that most newer big rigs have a set of hooks under the hood just for a winch or tow rope to attach to the frame. You would normally take them from the resting place under the hood and then insert them into the holes in the Plastic Bumper which are then automatically put into a clevis directly attached to the frame. I have been pulled out of a sticky situation similar to this one with the tow company using those tow hooks that I mentioned.
