I’ve got the Q2 and absolutely love it. Every time I take photos with it I wish I took more photos because the images turn out so gorgeous. To me the simplicity of use and the gorgeous photos is what the Q2 is. None of the upgrades makes me feel like I “need” a Q3. But I am happy Leica keeps develop this system, it’s a brilliant concept. Only if my Q2 broke I would probably get a Q3 :)

I believe that one of the nice aspects of the Q/Q2 cameras is that they look pretty close, in terms of the design language, to the M cameras. I think adding the tilt screen, and even worse the plasticky door on the side, are major departure from the industrial look of Q/Q2 and their M sibling cameras. For me it is definitely a less attractive camera than the Q2. I'm hoping that those changes to the body design, somehow, won't make their way into the Q3 Monochrom version. Given the fact that the Q3 Monochrom is a niche camera, it would be great if the pure industrial design of Q/Q2 is kept intact for its design.

That's exactly what I am thinking regarding my Canon 5ds. Did you do it? On the one hand, as I get older (63), I find it harder to lug around all the glass and weight. On the other hand, I am reluctant to give up the flexibility. The Q3 will be my first foray into Leica. Maybe I'll get a second M in a few years. Your thoughts?

About that tilt screen: Take a look at Leigh’s Q3 video (Leigh & Raymond Photography), in which she includes some near ground level macro shot. Leigh is recovering from back surgery (in fact, was pending follow-up surgery when she recorded the video). For many people, the ability to shoot low without throwing yourself to the ground, is huge. We all know that, if Leica were to incorporate a tilt screen on a premium camera like the Q, they would use a highly reliable, solidly built mechanism. Yes, Fujifilm managed to make an extremely slim screen for the X100V, and it is strong enough for that camera, but it is nowhere near as robust (see the Z9 for another industrial strength design). The Q is still all-metal, highly weather resistant, and every bit as rugged as it’s predecessors. I agree that a more textured finish, especially in the thumb detent, would be welcome. I always thought (going back to the original Q) that that smooth surface suggested a plasticky construction, which of course is not the case. It would also be great to see some provision for back button focusing.

  • @jonashuck
    @jonashuck Жыл бұрын

I also think a tiltable screen makes sense on a Q, yet I don't like how they implemented it making the design less elegant and more clunky. I think the Fuji X100V has done it in a much nicer way. It overall feels just like a camera with more design compromises than the Q2. But that's just my first impression.

Still in love with my Q2. I’m old school and not interested in tilt. I don’t really use the display and 47mp is plenty. Charging hasn’t been an issue with two batteries and it looks like trade in value is very low. Saving up for a few years so that I can buy a used M11. In the meantime my X-T4 and M6 will also be my constant for photo and video! Thanks for the amazing content as always.

Thank you Matt for the nice preview! I just don't see a compelling reason to upgrade from my Q2 to the Q3. The flip screen is just not needed for my photography. Too much like a Sony. In about a year we will probably see a Q3-S with all or most of the features but without the flip screen.

Well balanced review. Thanks! I get that when you're paying Leica bucks that Leicaphiles will get up in arms over the tilt screen. Personally I think it's a great idea and indeed a bold move for Leica. I have been a full time pro for decades and I go back to the film age with my first Leica being a Leitz Minolta CL and then an M4-P. I could never justify a decent ROI in my business for Leica. So I used Canon, Hasselblad, Mamiya, etc. These days Sony and Fujifilm. I want a Q3! It seems like the ideal bring-it-with-me-everywhere camera. I will get my hands on one later this week to make a determination. I am concerned about the slippery factor you mentioned (first review I've seen to bring it up). I'm hoping it won't be a deal breaker for me. It seems a grip with its extra bulk might defeat some of the purpose of being compact and unobtrusive.

I have been using the Q2 mono for over a year, and I like the idea of the flip screen. I did own the X100V, which I enjoyed using, but I was using it sparingly since I have the Q2 and M11, so I sold it to a friend. I own a sony a7c, and I like how the screen flips around. Will I buy the new Q2? I'll wait for the Q4; enough GAS. On the M11, the visioflex is my flippy screen. The Visioflex could be more stealthy and better for getting low, but it does help.

I sold my Q2 Monochrom after I got a Q1. I fell in love with the Q1 over the Q2M along with other M bodies. Recently I got a Q-P for a long time use since I love the Q1 which I listed for sale. Q-P is beautiful and absolutely the best looking Q among all the Q series including limited editions. I don’t like the Ghost edition, Reporter edition, Dawn edition, etc. Finally Q3 came out. Unfortunately nothing special. Same lens (Q1, Q2, Q3 all same lens) I don’t need that huge 60MP. 24MP with my Q-P is pretty enough. I don’t like a tilting screen. I don’t need 8k video as I don’t shoot video. I will buy a Sony camera for video if I’m in need of one for shooting video. And the design is identical to Q2. It’s just like upgrading a few functions so I would say it’s a Q2U(pgrade), not Q3. Price is $5995. Around $6500 after tax. No reason to upgrade at all. I will keep my lovely Q-P and then 1) I will use $6500 for other electronics such as Samsung 85” TV, iMac, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook for about $3500. And I will buy Sony/Canon camera and lens + accessories for video for about $3000. Or, 2) I will use $6500 to buy a SL2/SL2-S and SL 24-90mm lens while I keep my lovely Q-P. Answer is quite clear about the Q3. .

Having picked up a Q2Mono last week, I genuinely don't feel a need for the Q3 updates for myself yet. The biggest upside for me would be the USB-C charging, but not a deal breaker. Lack of internal storage seems like a huge missed opportunity. Glad to know that the og Q lens still can resolve at 60 megapixels. I get the appeal of a flippy screen, and good to hear the implementation of it feels super solid, but it's super cringe that Leica's entire marketing campaign for the Q3 is "Discover a new perspective". 🙃

No internal memory in the Q3 is a trade off and price point differance compared to M11. Q is mean t to be small as possible/makes sense (less room for memory) and cheaper than M system, so when you add tilt screen (probably more popular than memory) less budget room for memory. Maybe in Q4 when memory gets cheaper/smaller even more. Also now you have tri sensor if you''re running low on space you can drop down resolution.

They should just make an interchangeable Q using the L mount with an EVF and tilt screen. They wouldn’t have to eat into the M body’s iconic styling, and they could appease newer enthusiasts who may want the tech and to not have to calibrate a rangefinder. I personally would love to adapt M glass to a Q and have the EVF for my poor vision and focus peaking. This would make so much sense especially when sigma’s FP is shutterless

Matt, I think Leica missed a trick here. When the Q3 flip screen rumours began I hoped Leica would rather than add a flip screen they would add visoflex compatibility leaving those with old knees like me a shoot down option whilst not alienating those who prefer a fixed screen. I'm mildly irritated that the video option has been given a lift. I resent paying for features for which I have no use with a new battery system to boot. I have an SL2s so if I now upgrade I'm back to two different batteries which I hoped to avoid. Let's hope we have a Leica Q3D with no screen, visoflex compatibility and the Q2 battery. It's wishful thinking. Thanks for the review......

Informative review. I liked your description of the new crop features better than another review I saw. My only snarky comment is that if they really want this to be an every day carry then they need to have something much lower in price. But then I guess it wouldn't be a Lieca. It certainly is tempting for those of us dreaming to own a Lieca.

Why oh why do we not have internal storage yet on cameras of this size! My iphone has 1TB. I cant believe we still have to worry about SD cards. I don't really care about the changes, especially the flip screen I am happy with the solid body of my Q2!

Honestly, I was so excited by the prospect of having a Q2 with a tilt screen, better AF, and internal storage. This is still exciting, and I still want one, but man... the lack of even like, 32GB of onboard storage is a bit of a buzzkill.

I'm always puzzled by the "purists" upset by design changes in non-M Leica systems. The Q system isn't really a "tradition" in the way that the M-system is. While I can understand why Leica fans have gripes over the QoL design changes made in the M11, the Q cameras always struck me as trying to blend aspects of the Leica brand-- like build quality-- with the demands of modern digital photography. I mean, it's not like there was ever a "film Q." We have to have at least one system where Leica can try new things.

You are all saying cropping is not the same as the lens change. It is exactly the same if you recalculate the FOV and DOF based on the crop. 50mm 2.8 on FF is exactly the same FOV and DOF as 25mm 1.4 on a 2x crop, no matter the software crop like a Q or the hardware crop like a m4/3 sensor. Stop spreading misinformation.

Compression and distortion is unchanged when you crop. Every experienced Photographer can feel and see the difference from cropping to changing lenses. Numbers don‘t mean anything if the images feel different. I used a Q2 for a year and the distorted look even in the crop modes drove me crazy.

I'm disappointed that you had a 2 week break and this is the next video you come up with. I'm more interested in Matt, in photography, in how you use your M11. Your own creative workflow. I value your relationship with Leica because I know it brings you a lot, but I hope you come up with a "Matt" video soon :)

Damn that rear LCD is ugly. They should take note from Fujifilm and their implementation in the X100V where they have it sitting flush against the body. Poor from Leica.
