[ENG] LEICA Q3 - Worth the Hype?

Ғылым және технология

I've always wanted to try the Q2, but I never found a way to do so. I recently was in Milan and asked the Leica Store if there was a way to test the brand new Q3.
They were so kind to let me try it so that I could present you with my first impressions.
I'd definitely love to test it for a longer time frame, and get the most out of it, but the time I had with it was enough to come up with some conclusions.

Hey Luca, great video as always. It’s nice to see making content with heart. I’m a Fujifilm Xpro3 owner, my camera serves me well for 3 years. Maybe I can help addressing a bit what type of reasons make some of us look over the shoulder to a Q3 and I start to say, is not for being a Leica (at least to me): I do love my xpro3 but sometimes I feel that I would like something full frame and portable that would allow me to do street photography with enough sensor resolution to work without always switching lenses (I want to do be able to do it trough crop). Sometimes I’m on the mood to shoot 28mm (full frame equivalent), sometimes I’m a 35mm or 50mm guy, it’s handy to find a solution with enough sensor resolution that allow us crop, I find interesting the fact that the camera allow to do in in real time, more interesting the fact that keeps the full image in the raw file. I know the compression is not the same, the dof is not the same.. but I’m a street guy, I shot f5.6 or f/8 I’m used to some absence of blur and I could sacrifice a bit of compression for versatility. The fact of being a full frame sensor or apsc would not be a big deal today because we have good bright glass in Fujifilm with the “new” 1.4 wr lenses BUT that would obligate me to buy a xt5 (that I don’t like because I prefer range finder style) sensor wise and 3 or 4 wr lenses (+/- 800€ each) and I would keep switching lenses and I would carry a lot of kilos in my back. Fujifilm recent glass is amazing and allows great DOF, bright images at low ISO but following that path puts us so close to a DLSr full frame camera on price, apecs and weight. Well, the options on the market are lacking interesting points to me and lead me to the Leica Q3 and I hate the fact (for price and for niche label). Fujifilm x100vi is portable enough, has a good sensor, is rangefinder style but I want more of a sensor (60mp) even if I could live with 40 but I do not like the 23mm lens (too tight) and is not bright enough (f/2) and is not that sharp or has poor micro contrast. I do own that lens (interchangeable) on the xpro3, it’s a work horse but has it’s limitations. I also hate the NP-W126S battery life, I have to carry always 3 with me. The x100vi is a great camera but not for me even if I do understand that is impossible to make a small 18mm f/1.4 wr on a apsc sensor. That leads me to Sony A7Cr, great camera, great sensor, great lenses, cheaper that Leica and with interchangeable lens option. I could be in love but I hate the articulated flip-out screen option for street photography, I prefer tiltable flip screen and the deal breaker to me is the low resolution EVF on a flagship such as the A7Cr (the same as a xpro3, lower than a xt5, half of the Q3). So, the bottom line is the Q3 is the only full frame camera offering 60mp sensor, with a bright and tak sharp lens that “behaves” like 4 primes, with a useful battery life for a day, with a magnificent bright and clear viewfinder (also a LCD), with full manual controls if needed, with a decent auto focus (not Sony but ok) considering the physical limitations of Fujifilm to offer such a pack remaining light weight (and single lens) or Sony because those prefer to offer a vlog back screen type on a 60mp camera and go on cost saving on the EVF. So I hate the Q3 for being Leica considering I’m a low profile guy (please Leica release a reporter model with no logo and the same price 🙏) and for the price but yes, those are alone.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Your description of the camera you want is exactly the Q3, so I'm sure it's the righ camera for you. I made a video on the X-Pro3 + 18mm F1.4 as a potential alternative option, but it's got some limitations. I am dying to see what the X-Pro4 is going to be, because if they nail the design choices (an LCD that makes sense, getting rid of the hybrid viewfinder for a very good EVF) shrinking the size a little bit... with the 40MP sensor. That would be a very tough competition for the Q3. As for the alternatives, i still think the X100VI is a great one, even better in some aspects compared to the Q3, although the lens is not the ideal one for me. I love the 28mm, and if the X100 had an 18mm i would be even happier than I am with it. With the 40mp sensor i would only need an electronic crop to 40mm equivalent and i would have everything I need. I looks like Leica is working on a cheaper alternative, an APSC fixed lens camera with an 18mm lens... these are the rumors. That would be a super interesting camera as well.

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Thank you so much Luca. Meanwhile I got the xf18mm f/1.4 WR to pack with the xpro3. Looks like a new camera to me, razor sharp images, a bit slower to focus (compared to a test I did in store with the xt5). I'm a range finder type guy, maybe because I have a big nose 😁, I've never been a big fan of central EVF like DLSR design. I'll cross my fingers for a Xpro4 with the specs you mention. With 40mp and f/1.4 I would not think on going to full frame. Honestly, with this 18mm f/1.4 WR, would be hard to me to judge this images against a full frame image; one packs a xf33 and a 18 together (or a 23 and 56) and is ready for a trip. But I'll keep my xf16-80 f/4 for versatility on my trips. Regards and keep the amazing work.

Luca, I agree with you, the Q3 would be an ideal walkabout camera for sure. I spent a little time with one at the Leica Washington DC store and was extremely impressed. If I could afford one, I would have purchased it on the spot (along with an M11 & 50mm Sumilux!). For now, my little Olympus Pen-F's will continue to suffice (as I am putting any extra money towards remodeling our retirement home in Roccamorice, Abruzzo!). Maybe when i stop shooting professionally and sell off my GFX system I can make the jump! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

still not good enough for me to shell out that money for it. It's just the brand name.. I can fit a 24 or 35 prime on a mirrorless and be happier.. more frame per sec.. faster af/tracking. Yes it is alittle bigger and heavier but not by alot anyway and alot cheaper..

I get your point, but at the same time they are different tools. And the Q3 isn't meant to be for everyone. And to some extent even cheaper cameras such as the Fuji x100 series, Ricoh GR and similar aren't meant to be for everyone. The food thing is as consumers we have lots of good cameras we can choose from, at different price points
