I’m back with another Beamish video, with a first look at the Aged Miners Houses which were recently opened in the 1950s town.

The Aged Miners Houses are replicas of cottages from Marsden Road in South Shields. Two of the cottages are open to the public to show what life was like for retired miners during the 1950s whilst the rest will provide a place for activities for people living with dementia and long term health conditions as well as to help with mental health, loneliness and isolation.

Many thanks for that walk round of one of the new exhibits at Beamish. One thing in particular caught my eye - the crocodile fire tongs sitting on the sideboard. I have the identical item sitting not two feet from me on my hearth tiles as I write these words. My crocodile used to sit on the hearth in my nana & grandad’s house in Fulwell and after they passed away it found its way to me. ‘Tis many years since I left Sunderland, but that crocodile, and a few other treasured things, are concrete links to a happy time long ago.
Similar cottages still in use in Boldon Colliery.

They are quite hidden away to the left of the council houses so I nearly missed them too!
enjoyed the video, but not the irritating music, so i just turned the volume down to zero.
