    I love Marlin Flake. Went the 500g route after a few tins. Definitely a biter. I find that drying it out to almost brittle really makes it a dark-flake profile and significantly kills the bite. Unfortunately that route takes away most, not all of the sweetness that I actually enjoy but may be more up your ally Bradly. Once in a blue moon I nail drying it, right in the middle, with balanced sweetness yet no bite and dark flake characteristics. I also find this stuff really shines in a cob as well.

    Who said MF is like Old Gowrie? No, they’re not alike. The Rattray’s selections that are alike, sort of, are Hal O’ the Wynd, Old Gowrie, and Brown Clunee. The have the same three ingredients in different proportions.

    I've had several people tell me that they found them similar. I thought the addition of Cavendish made this one have a pretty different character.

    @@stuffandthingsyoutube The cavendish for sure, and the fact that OG has Kentucky, and a different casing. I just don’t understand how anyone could think the two blends similar. I like them both, yet I think you won’t be adding MF to your rotation. 😉

    I have some aged Marlin Flake in my cardboard box (i.e., cellar), and your present review has spurred me to indulge in a bowl thereof. My recollection of the blend is that it is quite enjoyable and, as Virginia/Perique flakes go, sophisticated. My experience indicates that the flakes benefit from occasional rehydration even when cellared in tightly-closed glass jars. I look forward to your full review of "Marlin Flake." Cheers!

    Marlin flake is named proper considering that catching a batch is just like catching a real Marlin. You either catch one or dont. No spoilers but it does hit the spot when reeled in low n slow. Only thing to make it over the top would be hooking a real Marlin while enjoying this blend miles away from land. One could only hope! Cheers!

    This was the first non-aromatic blend I ever had and it blew my mind as to what pipe smoking should be lol. So a bit special place in my heart. It can tend to bite if you get aggressive at all unfortunately. But the base flavor profile is delicious IMO. Love the new video background. Thanks for all your content, Bradley 👍

    They don’t say it on the tin but I’m positive there’s quite of bit of Kentucky in it and no one can convince me otherwise. It’s very different from bullseye in my opinion. It’s much sweeter and tangy. It’s actually kind of similar to Old Dark Fired with a little less BBQ

    That was my impressions too. Biggest problem I have is it was too mild of flavor until about the last half. I would overheat it to try to get much out of it. I do like that it comes in a ‘belt’, just wish it was a bit more flavor.

    Since K&K took over the Rattray's name, they've added all sorts of blends and slapped the Rattray's label on them. This is one I probably would never try, simply because it's a Virginia. Although the original Rattray's Black Virginia was perhaps the most amazing tobacco I ever smoked. I go all the way back to when the labels read "Blended by Charles Rattray at Perth, Scotland." i.e. the real thing. Great show today!

    tongue tingle is probably the moisture in the tobacco. The sweetness is from the virginias and perique, and the fact that its flake is also to blame. The tobacco has been under pressure for a long time and so the flavors and oils have mixed properly, at the same time there has also been a chemical (nature chemical) aging process due to this.

    I read somewhere that black cavendish in Rattray’s blends is made with a different leaf than what American black cavendishes are made from. I too don’t like black cavendish EXCEPT for the black cavendish that Rattray’s uses.

  • @stuffandthingsyoutube

    @stuffandthingsyoutube

    In most cases, European black cavendish will be different than American. It's basically steamed Virginia. American cavendish often uses burley, and the cheap stuff is filled with the stereotypical "gloop" we associate with highly flavored, cheap aromatics. I prefer British/European style black cavendish, but I still don't usually love it in a blend.
