    1. Shortcut for adjusting velocities: hold the step and turn the Accent knob. When not holding a step, the Accent knob will also scale any velocities you've programmed in. 2. For tuning pitched samples, setting the Ctrl knob to Coarse and sequencing that lets you work in semitones, much easier than sequencing the Tuning knob. Though you cannot use the Ctrl knob for anything else on that track though, one of the biggest flaws of the TR-8S unfortunately 3. Last tip :) there is a sensitivity setting for the pad, I definitely prefer the lightest option 👍

@@LiamKillen Fairfield circuitry have really done well to offer unique sounds. As a guitarist who bought groove boxes and drum machines, I really like your idea. I have done a weird thing where I use stereo pedals and left is my guitar and right is a volca drum for example. Not the best idea but when I do a quick jam, it really is easy. If you have the volca drum, I'd would love to see your take on making beats. And also I'd like to buy Rooms or empress reverb if you have a comparison video for that would be the best.

I picked up the TR-6s this week for cheap after having passed on a good deal on the older TR-8. The acb drums are great, very dynamic. Too bad the old TR-8 doesn't have the whole set without shelling out extra cash because I don't really need yet another sample importer like the TR-8s at that cost. If only the TR-6s had the sidechain. Oh well, I've got an mx-1, circuit tracks, and some analog compressors for that. Still, can't understate how useful sidechain units are. It's amazing how tactile and fun the sliders are, really needs to be experienced to get it.

  • @LiamKillen

@@LiamKillen Right, like the TR-8(s) has that external audio in that can process it's own tracks that are directed out of an auxiliary out (not the best solution, but a solution nonetheless, never mind that it can process other external audio) and the T-8 can at least sidechain it's own internal tracks, so really an annoyance that TR-6s can't at least do it's internal sounds with a straight-up, non-hacky, non-workaround method.

I am SOOOO here for this. I love this machine with all its quirks, and limitations. It wouldn't be a Roland product with out some frustrating design choices! And I totally agree on keeping it for drums... I'm going for an mC 101 a synth module to complement my moogs as well... get the ear candy from the 101, bass and synths from Moog, ans the TR8s is the beast with the beat.

Have u tried it with The TR-EDITOR ? it’s a must for menu diving & live jams ++ a much needed overview on whAtever cpu screen Personally the way I use my TR8S is literally always kind of improvisation jams that keeps surprising myself with fucked up rhythms and polyrhythms and because over the years I’ve never Interested into being plugged to a DAW And sit down and try to build a construct a song over hours, days or weeks depending on how complicated you like your beats to be. But every single time I try to focus and tell myself the right let’s build something that’s gonna lead to somewhere I don’t know yet… My internal clock triggers itself after 3-4 minutes and I always kinda end up somewhere else. I just subbed to your channel because I like your delivery and then I’d like you’re a brutal opinion if you have the time or whatever on my first and only time I dared press record on the camera for a random WTF techno sess bout’ 2 after getting the drum machine being my first and only ..so far .. Until I reach an acceptable standard which mine are quite high so I’m not gonna put some BS out just for the sake of just whatever. On my “channel” lol (I have 1or2vids) I’d really appreciate your opinion… And what do you think of my time signatures switch where I go from 100 ÷ 3 to 130÷4 Cheers!

I have and love the tr6s... keep debating if the tr8s is worthwhile (for me). Hmmm. I own a ton of grooveboxes. I think with the mc 707 a lot of ppl don’t get over the learning hump. It has become my go-to (over my mpc). Once you learn how to change the chords in chord mode it unleashes the composition possibilities... paired with the synth patches.., I find a lot of inspiration. Note, i hate the pad sensitivity on the mc 707... so I change it to fixed and then modify per step. Note, the mc 707 drums (and tones) are not locked to the grid and can be nudged.

@@dracul74 I'd love a 707 in concept (having come from mc's back in the day), but that abm engine just doesn't do it for me. Though, it's no worse than the circuit sound engine, or most other groove boxes I know. But you have to admit that the acb drums on the TR's are next level. I've got a ton of samplers and analog machines (including Rytm), but for THOSE old Roland sounds, the acb on the TR's is a perfect compromise over getting something like the new Behringers.

  • @dracul74

@@alexwestconsulting agreed. About 1/2 the time I use the mc 707 drums as a scratch track... to have something to arrange against and then use other sounds in the final track. Being able to stream 8 tracks over usb, 1000s of really good synth and pad tones, ability to move notes off the grid, probability logic, ability to assign chords within a scale to pads and Ableton like clip abilities is where the mc 707 shines for me anyway. Don’t get me wrong... I hate the small screen and other stuff about it too and I still use other groove boxes. I’m sure someday I’ll have a new fav, lol. I used a Mpc for a few years, but never quite got the sounds from my head with it.

11:17 the 707 has micro timing, and most times you just want it not to. ; - )

@@LiamKillen kinda got that impression. I got rid of mine a few years back it hasn’t the “fun factor” of the TR-8s!

Is it me or does all of these songs on the TR-8S sound like flat midi files? I don't get the hype. I'd rather work with a Maschine DAW at that price. If you want to go big DAWLESS go AKAI or Elektron and add something like a M6 or Mikrofreak to the mix with it.
