I feel like changing the voice of Mario and Sonic seem to be the start of a new era for each franchise respectively. Charles Martine jumped in as Mario during the dawn of the 3D platformer, then was swapped out for one of the most visually diverse 2D games in the series. Sonic got his first main voice (not counting the arcades, cartoons, or edutainment games) in Sonic Adventure, the dawn of the dreamcast era. Then they switched the voice out for Shadow the Hedgehog, the beginning of the "Dark" Era. And now they have the new guy for the "meta" era. (I hate these names.) Sonic has had the same voice for a good while now, but they changed the voice direction, implying the beginning for ANOTHER new Era of Sonic games.

I mean, Mario had alot of eras during Charles. There was the 3d era (n64) experimenting era (gamecube/GBA/Wii/ds) bland era (Wii u/3ds) and then the safe era (switch) , i hope that Nintendo is going back to the experimenting era with the Mario serie in the new console.

Yeah, Sonic's current VA (Roger Craig Smith) has played Sonic for around 13 years now. Each previous Sonic VA had their era as Sonic but personally I don't consider them to be the "Dreamcast, dark or meta" eras but rather the "Ryan, Jason, and Roger" eras And Mario's VA change comes from Charles retiring from the role. Personally I like the sound of the voice.

This becomes ironic once you realize that Sonic's Japanese voice actor (Jun'ichi Kanemaru) has stayed the same since Adventure 1 in 1998. Since Charles started voice-acting Mario in 1994, as long as Jun'ichi keeps voicing Sonic for 4 more years, Sonic will actually have had the same voice for longer than Mario (at least in Japan).

Japan handles voice acting much differently than America. Voice actors get a lot more respect in Japan than they do in America, and so a lot of times, it's considered disrespectful to replace a VA. In the most recent Fire Emblem game, one of the character VA's couldn't record any lines so the character just had a lot of his content cut. I believe there was an anime where the main lead's VA couldn't provide lines for some reason and they just had a season without them.

I love how this just makes it looks like Mario and Sonic just casually pass each other on the street.

Dunno if it’s an unpopular opinion or not, but I’m always up for someone to take up the new mantle of Mario’s voice. Charles did a phenomenal job as Mario, but I’m also intrigued to see someone try the role.

Honestly makes me wonder how Charles was received after the Walker Boone "taxi driver" direction Mario went with before. This kind of thing happens regardless. I think Roger's a way better Sonic than Jason now.

I'm gonna side with you on this just because I know thats a highly contested take. I'm a huge fan of Roger and think his performance is unfairly conflated with the shift in writing that coincided his debut. I also think people tend to base their favorite VA on nostalgia more than anything.

I love Roger's voice but he's been handed really bad material as Sonic, I wouldn't even say Frontiers is him at his best (His voice is just a little too low) there's a perfect middle ground I hope that he's able to get in maybe the next game, but as is, I still think Jason is a better Sonic overall.

What’s impressive is that while Kevin did sound a bit off for Mario and threw people off during Wonder’s announcement, literally NOBODY (from what I found) made even ONE comment about Luigi being off because he just wasn’t! Kevin isn’t perfect, but he is damn GOOD to make us overlook Luigi’s voice entirely.

I actually remember having this VHS of the Super Mario Bros Super Show as what could’ve been my first exposure to Mario. Hell, I think growing up on Dorkly, seeing some of the Super Show, etc. might’ve made me more receptive to Charles leaving the role. Other than that, had Roger not reprised his role as Sonic for Frontiers onwards, I think Max Mittelman would’ve done a good job as the Blue Blur

A lot of people can replicate the voice of mario perfectly so any change that is barely noticable is welcome

Honestly, I just thought it was gonna be Mick Wingert, because he's already got lots of experience in voice acting as it is He voices Po and Shrek in whichever Kung Fu Panda and well, Shrek materials come out that aren't the movies, and he does a great job at sounding a lot like Jack Black and Mike Myers respectively So, I'd believe if he could take up the mantle from Charles Martinet and be Mario, too

Unlike Sonic though, Mario's new voice direction intends to make it sound as much like Charles Martinet as possible... I bet most people wouldn't even notice if you didn't tell them. Meanwhile each of Sonic's voices sound distinctly different.

He sounds different to me, but I didn't notice until the announcement. Now that I do, it's fine. He sounds ok in Wonder since he's like more energetic, I'm more "worried" on how he will sound on a more normal game. Like Wonder is so different my brain doesn't even mind the new voice, I would like ho hear how he would sound in a NSMB style game (if they're still gonna make them...) or a new 3D game.

I'd actually be okay with Mario getting new voices every once in a while. Most Nintendo characters don't get new recordings every game. Like in Smash, Captain Falcon hadn't gotten any new recordings done since Smash 64 until the MinMin trailer and that was just slurping sfx.

I'm just a lil iffy on how they did Luigi. Guy is the younger bro, but not THAT young.

The new guy sounds good. It's believable as Mario, not like Chris Pratt, in my opinion. But for as good as this new guy is, 30 years of Mario and Luigi, those are some HUGE shoes to fill.

Mario's new voice is pretty good. I can tell the difference, but I think it will grow on me. Luigi's is absolutely perfect. I wouldn't hear a difference if I didn't know there was a new VA. For a lot of lines, I still don't.

True, but it is a little strange since even as recently as 12 months ago Charles said he wanted to continue voicing Mario until he "dropped dead"… But maybe he and/or Nintendo decided during a test recording that his voice had aged more noticeably than they expected, so he retired. Charles has said Mario is a character who's always at 100% and that gets harder to pull off once you get past your mid-60's (he's 68).
