FIRST ENGINE START! - DarkAero 1 Aircraft
Ғылым және технология
The DarkAero 1 first engine start was a success!
The DarkAero 1 was designed specifically around the UL520iS engine made by UL Power. More information about this engine can be found at: ulpower.com/en/engines/ul520/...

There are a number of tools that we used to get the engine to a state where we could test run it. A big component of this was establishing proper torque values. For this we used a combination of 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" torque wrenches. These tools along with others that will be needed to build the DarkAero 1 are called out in our Build Tools Page: www.darkaero.com/knowledge/to...

I think I can speak for the community of your viewers who watch every video you make, we are so very happy for you and congratulations! This is a huge mile stone. I’m attending my first Airventure in a few weeks and if you guys have a booth there I am definitely stopping by to say hi! Can’t wait to see this plane in person. Best of luck moving forward.
Gentlemen, very inspiring work you're doing! Can't wait to see it fly! Thanks for sharing!

That's cool and all and Imma let you speak, but I've been waiting over 2-years for this!! Finally! :) P.S. Props (pun intended) to anyone who got the reference ;)
It's alive !!!! ... Congrats guys ! :) Excellent work !
Congrats on the successful engine start! We can't wait for you to fly over Tormach on your first flight!
As an A&P and an Experimental Aircraft enthusiast these videos have been a joy to watch.
Congrats! I guess good news travels fast - here in MA folks were setting off fireworks…
Excellent!! If you haven't already, put a positive stop on the end of your throttle wire. Cannot wait for the rest of the build and testing. Thanks for the great vids,J

I thought the same thing when I saw it. 💯

@@jimk8520 So did a lot of us. And no wheel chocks (anything could have happened). For the Dark Aero team: It is good practice to put some kind of hood over an air cooled engine when testing, if not the actual cowling, so the air flows down through the cylinder fins. Do you have six CHT probes and or EGT probes on it? Are you going to be doing any baffling to direct the air flow? At Lycoming they would put air pressure sensors at various places under the cowl when a new plane model came out, to ensure the best cooling for the cylinders. They would test fly it and take readings and those readings had to make a certain pressure or it would be hard to issue warranty on a particular installation.

@@i.r.wayright1457 Look underneath at 4:21, those are tethers that tether the plane down / back. Great points on the airflow and testing however.

Congratulations folks on your latest milestone. That UL sounds awesome!
It’s alive! Congratulations! This is a huge step. I can see you all have taken great care in all the details that make this happen
Outstanding. You guys have been busy since I last saw it. Looking forward to seeing the first flight.
Honestly I was so lost in the materials and the general build of this craft that I forgot it's actually going to fly. The joy when I saw you were testing the engine ,mind blown.
Congratulations guys. One thing I got concerned about, so thought I’d pass it along. Be careful running the engine with the small fillets on the spinner bulkhead not attached to the spinner itself. I once slung off both of my fillet pieces running at just moderate power during a ground run without the spinner installed. The airplane looks GREAT and wow, that engine sounds like an IO-540. Pretty dang cool!!!

the lighter weight of a Carbon spinner parts will mean less forces exerted on the parts when spinning, so it might not be an issue, good catch, sharing our experiences is how we get better doing our things.

More like an IO550
This is an awesome milestone! Congratulations. Looking forward to seeing this bird fly!
I watched the video with closed caption on. When the engine started, it said "MUSIC" and I thought "Yup, that's music to a pilot's ears!"
CONGRATS!!! I know what a big milestone that is for every build and especially when you build "in public" like you do. Almost missed the excitement that you must have felt ... Next video ;-)
I am pretty excited for you all. Looking forward to the continuing build.
Can't say how much I've been waiting for this
That was so cool to see that the engine started so quickley. Two thumbs up !!!!
Wow, it pulls against the tie down as soon as even the starter turns it. Amazing.
congratulations, I have been following your progress for two years and am continuously impressed with your measured and thoughtful progress toward your goal, Great work!
Congratulations on achieving another significant milestone. Absolutely loving seeing this build come together!
Your are amazing and it is a pleasure to see you all working in the Darkaero proyect. Waiting for first fly and hoping you sussed. Congratulations.
As always, so great to see you guys proceed with such care and precision. Amazing job and hope to see your DA1 up close and flying… congratulation on the engine start milestone 👍🏼
Congrats! Massively proud of what you guys hav achieved!
WOW!! Congratulations guys! Love the sound of that engine. Smooooth.
Congrats guys! Looking forward to seeing y’all hit your milestones leading up to first flight!
Such an incredibly long process but as we all know, the engineering on this airplane is far above anything else in this size range within the experimental aircraft world. Hyper efficiency is far more attractive than hyper performance (and cost). I’m a fan. Be safe. Have fun! I think the hardest part is behind you now.
That sounds great! Cant wait for more progress vids
Awesome work. Love that it’s dark outside for the test. Always the way! 👍🥳
what a beauty! lightweight AND quick. can't wait to see it in the sky.
Nice to see your progress. Impressive how you develop and build a beautiful and fast aircraft together. Good luck with the next steps.
I love everything about this plane
So exciting to see this coming together. Keep grinding! You built in in a pandemic That's amazing already!
Congratulations! First engine start is a special moment. I wish you every success.
Wow guys thing's are looking great and I imagine it must have felt fantastic to start the engine this was big day for your program congratulations. The steady progress is a testament to your methodical planning and attention to the smallest details. If someone asked me to close my eyes and Invision a small fast airplane in my mind it would look exactly like the DarkAero. Congratulations on the successful engine test.
I’m loving it, you guys are close to having a fully operational aircraft, I’m looking forward to the first flight, great job guys
Yes!!! So excited to see you guys work! Keep it up!
Exciting times for you and your viewers. It looks fast just sitting there with the engine running. Congratulations thus far on the build.

Heck yeah! That rumble is such a sweet sound.
Congratulations! A fantastic milestone :) Considering the engine wasn't being throttled - the instantaneous trust movement forward as it kicked in was pretty impressive! Yay for the wires holding it in place :)
Great job, guys! Loved the engine noise!
This is absolutely great!
Bravo gents! A big moment. Now to get some air between the wheels and the tarmac!
Terrific work, guys.
That engine sounds so nice... well done.
you guys are becoming legendary. Keep it up
stunning installation job well done.
Sounds fantastic.
Outstanding!! Well done guys.
Outro! Safety first! Thank you for reminding us about safety! I honetly think it is realy important to point out those things when you have such a big audience. Esspecially if there are kids watching you (i thing some of them do). Hate when some youtuber neglect safety publicly.
Congratulations!
