FIRST DRIVE: Tamiya Wild One Max - 38bhp + 500kg = FUN

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Who hasn’t imagined getting behind the wheel of their favourite r/c car? The Wild One Max is that dream come true. It’s a road legal, 38bhp, 48V electric buggy that weighs 500kg might just be the most unashamedly fun car of 2023. And it has provenance. TWOM is the work of The Little Car Company, an ingenious startup that’s spent the past three years creating meticulously engineered 75 per cent scale versions of significant historic cars, such as the Aston Martin DB5, Bugatti T35 and Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.
Now the LCC has reversed its shrink ray, secured the approval of a presumably bemused but delighted Tamiya, and scaled up the Wild One. In the flesh, the Max is simple but irresistible. It uses a welded steel spaceframe chassis, with its cockpit now sufficiently widened so there’s room for two full-size adults. It’ll do almost 60mph all-out, while range is about 125 miles on the road, nudging 65 off-road depending on the degree of tomfoolery.
But the cost of all that tomfoolery doesn’t come cheap. Order one of the 100 launch editions and you’ll be forking out £35k before VAT. But who cares when you get to live out your childhood fantasy?

@@pierredubois3850 Are we talking about the same car? Sure it might not break any land speed records but it looked pretty quick to me. Also, that's 38bhp with instant torque and a short-geared drivetrain in a car that weighs just a hair over half a ton. The power to weight ratio is better than most modern commuter cars and it's putting all of its power into the bottom end. If you want another example of how little BHP actually matters without taking weight into account, look up any of the extreme track toys. Ariel Atom, KTM X-bow, Caterham S3, etc. All of these cars sit at around 200-300 BHP and yet they manage to blow the doors off of most high-performance sports cars.

Doesn't need anywhere near 100hp to be fun or competitive. You apparently are young and grew up on Razr's or other SXS stuff. Us kids from the 80's had things like Honda Pilot and Odyssey which weren't even close to that power output yet were absolutely a blast and sporty. You could definitely build and tune them and make faster and better like any ATV or dirt bike. Yes this cart would be a riot with 100hp just isn't needed was my point I guess.

This was a missed opportunity to have a legitimate fan (Chris Harris) tell us about Tamiya and this Wild One buggy. And no, I am not talking about who was on here first. Use logic if you wish to argue.

@@rikkiseddo were you meaning to reply to my comment? It makes zero sense. Chris Harris has been very open about his passion for Tamiya, even having their logo on his personal helmet. Just looking at his face and eyes when holding their product says it all (posts from the internet showing his love for the company). On the other hand, Barlow had even admitted in this video (if you watched it?) how he wasn't into Tamiya but slot cars (scalextric). so, I'm kind of curious of how your reply is relevant to what I had said initially. nonetheless I love both dudes. It's just more fitting for Chris with this review

Its not road legal. they are offering a road legal one but it's going to be have full mudguards. probably other differences too and only (15kw) 20hp to get around the regs for 'heavy quadricycles' If they could get this through the MSVA test it could have a proper engine or more powerful electric motor. But i doubt that's possible. If i'm wrong please tell me and put some links to the legislation and explain how they can do a 38bhp one. Its cool but road legal one is a fantasy.

That would be annoying AF to maintain those motorcycle engine swaps. This BEV version will get way more Seat Time. Needs a proper boring slow revving engine designed to take some abuse. Maybe 1.0L Ecoboost race version from Formula Ford.

If I had that sort of money to spend on toys, I'd be ripping the entire electric power system out of it and have it fitted with a proper engine. 100 bhp, many revs and a proper soundtrack would make this phenomenal.

Putting a electric sports bike 350volt power train into that would be a scary beast. Typically around 120hp and 140lb/ft, like a Litre Bike engine with 1.5x the torque.

48v battery and what looks like ample room for a pair of big 24v solar panels on the back. Keeping them clean might be an issue. (Why yes, I am perfectly well aware that they won't collect a whole 14.4kwh in a single day, before the inadequately-parented start pulling the emoji out)

WTF You are way too busy occupied to need shifting to have fun with this kind of intense driving. This is not cruising 6/10th on public roads and rowing gears. This is about attacking corners up to your safe limits. BEVs is perfect for this specific driving style.

38hp is too weak. Even cheap belt drive scooters have better power to weight ratios. 100hp should be the starting point for modest fun.
