The Go Fish by Rob Machado Twin Fin was quite the adventure for me. It took some getting used too at first but when I got the fins dialed in I started to have some fun.
I had some challenges getting used to this little 5’3” Twin Fin because it is so skatey. What I mean by skatey is with no center fin the board wants to slide out when I transition in my turns and that took some getting used too.
I tried 6 different fin set ups in this board and there were two that felt good. The Twin Fin Especial by Captain Fin and the T1 by Futures felt the best for my style of surfing. Machado recommends the K1 or K2 Keel fins by Futures and they felt really fast down the line but a bit delayed in my turns for my likings. I just don’t have enough Soul in my surfing and drawing classic lines is going to take some practice.
All in all this board was really fun for me going front side when I found the right fins that worked for me. My backside approach not so much as I could not get the board to stop sliding out on my top turns.
I had a good time trying such a unique design and in the end I feel like I learned how to use my rails better on my surfing. I think most surfers would find this board to be fun and exciting to try something new and learn how to draw different lines.

Some people can naturally surf a fish while others just don't understand the style needed to surf a fish. I thought Noel rode the board like he rides a thruster. The fish is not an up and down board. You ride in the center of the wave. Noel seems to acknowledge this. Nice guy.

just wanted to let you know, i have a ci twin fin with the merrick twin fins that it came with. i really didn't enjoy the board for the first few months i had it, it had its moments but overall it felt sluggish with no drive. i almost sold it but i ended up getting the capt fin especial because of this review. first session with them was a whole different experience. board is incredible now in waist high slow waves to 8-10ft waves on the face here in hawaii. my favorite board at the moment. thank you for that

@Lucca St. George The CI Twin Fin isn't designed for keels you need a more upright fin (it is v similar to the MR Supertwin). I have a set of L Futures CI Thermoflex and an S fin in the rear. It is insane, soooo much speed, took me a long time to work it out but the board is epic! I also ran some Captain especials and they work well too, and I tried the MRtwins but they were too big and drivey. Here's a tip, drop your back knee and lower your stance a little more than you would riding a regular thruster, this will engage it to drive down the line warp speed. Don't give up, stick with it, as a 2 +1 it is an insane board!

Good advice to try a full assortment of fins. I have had boards that I thought did not work but turned magic with the right fins. Smart review when you provide the full formula of volume, dimensions, your weight and size and actually show footage of the board in average surf (anything can look good at pumping Sandspit). One suggestion, as part of the reviews, show paddling the board and chasing the peak.

Noel I’ve been riding a GoFish for a couple months and this morning I switched from K2 fins to the Futures EN fins. It’s like I have a new performance fish. All of a sudden this board has ton of life off the top and bottom. The fins are springy and fairly upright! Thanks for the videos! Very helpful when make decisions.

I find having the right fins is way more important on twinnies than thrusters. I bought this performance-fishey style twinnie a while back and since I didn't have any proper twin fins I just put medium carver side fins in it. Board was fast, drivey, and loose enough to blow the fins out on end sections. I ended up buying an MR fin set a little later and the board just seemed to stiffen up. The increased surface area in the water just slowed the board down and it took more energy to push it through turns. Just goes to show that as useful as the general wisdom is, sometimes you have to experiment with weird board/fin combos to find what works for you.

Yeah! Rockin the 360's! It was great seeing how your style was modified when you rode this board. Your turns were a bit more drawn out and focused rather than tighter and effortless like usual. Noel That was the best review yet! You nailed it on the head. Even a great surfer like you cannot surf like some of the pros such as Machado. Your struggle with the board is what I think most average surfers go through when trying to get a high performance surfboard and then surf like Kelly Slater. You must find your own style and what surfboard fits you the best. I have been surfing for forty years and only in the wisdom of age and some extra money have I been able to get a bunch of boards and then figure out the board that fits my style. Then you have to figure out the fins that work best for you on a board and then finally learn what board is best for the wave you are surfing. You are always at a high performance wave there at Trestles, but I would guess that if you took the Go Fish out just down the beach at San Onofre you might appreciate the style of board differently and even want the original fins on the board instead of the ones you ended up liking. Probably even then next size up for some more volume. Surfing is like golfing. You do not just use one club! Surfing is the same. I take three to four boards down to the beach and judge which is best for the waves. This has made my sessions better since now I do not ride a high performance board when a hybrid or Mini-log would be best. I laugh when I see some guy on a skinny little board trying to shred some mushy Huntington Beach wave. I am super curious about this board too so if you want to pass it on I would buy it off you. Craig's List is the best thing. It allows you to buy and sell a board for about the same price and if even if you lose a few dollars it is like renting the board. It is a great way to try a lot of boards. I bought & sold about 30 boards this way and keeps my quiver down to 20 boards. Again thanks. The video was very insightful and your struggle to find the fin and proper style for the board was very helpful.

cvosburg77 Stoked you like our show!!! My favorite out of the 3 you mentioned is the Pod Mod. It’s not much of a fish type board though... it’s more like a hybrid performance board. It will surf the pocket pretty good. The Go Fish and Puddle Fish are both really fun boards. I like the Puddle Fish by Lost the best so far.... so I guess that’s my favorite Fish so far.

Hi there, first of all, congratulations for the review, just excellent. I ordered a 5`1`` and can`t wait to surf with it. One quick question, i am struggling to find a traction pad to fit the board. I saw you placed a "normal" traction pad on yours right? Thinking of not placing one at all but i amso used to the traction pad on my back foot that i don`t know if i will get used to a board without it if you know what i mean. I just got one of these in a 5'3 and I have to agree that I didn't like the feel of keel fins. I went to the T1 fin mainly so I could ride it like a hp board and transition to my 5'5 melted butter without changing my surfing style. This is my small wave board and it does that well without feeling bulky. You just have to see what Asher Pacey can do on a twinny to realise they're not just about cruising.

Brilliant honest review Noel. As you say you are not a twin fin guy. Despite that I think you surfed a lot better on the channel Islands Twinnie. I am not biased to towards either brand. I have a ton of Firewire boards that were awesome and similarly a ton of CI boards that rocked too. One comment, I think you picked the wrong size. I think most of your struggles were due to you over powering the 5'3". I think you need to surf the 5'5" (similar size to the CI twinnie) You are a power surfer and need something under your feet that you can push hard. Rob Machardo is much more light-footed and he rides a 5'2". My thoughts only.

I have ridden it a couple of times now so I can give some useful feedback - I had the dilemma of whether to go for 5'7 or 5'9, my performance shortboards are just under 30L, but my small 5'3" Baked Potato grovel board is 33L, the GO FISH 5'7 is 31L and the 5'9 is 33L. so I decided as it's my first ever Fish board with the 5'9" and I haven't regretted it so far. I stuck on some Futures K1 keel fins. First I was surprised how pointy the board is, it paddles well like my BP and can pickup small weak waves just under 2ft upwards - it feels very similar when paddling to the BP. the first wave I got caught out with the timing and went too far in-front of the wave, this board has speed! the balance is something else to get used to as it's very front foam heavy and a very thin tail. After a couple of waves I got used to it but I think this board is really aimed at intermediate/advanced surfer as you have to adjust your timing & really feel what it's doing. the board is very forgiving and feels light and glides effortlessly, I did a foam climb with it on one wave with ease and it has lot's of release off the top - that part really reminded me of the EVO (very similar), some of my other boards would have got stuck on that part of the wave. the fin's feel good (very precise), but I'll probably try one of the other makes at some point like the Sea Shepherds. Overall it's a keeper, I think it will work very well if you can get the right flow & let it do what it's designed to do. I haven't had chance to try it in bigger than 3ft waves yet... can't wait, should be fun.

I liked the show Salas. My observation from previous shows tell you're a power surfer. You're style fits juicy waves, you seem to always look for power, speed, and control . To me, riding a twin fin on weak waves is fun but when push comes to shove, having the proper equipment is everything. There are those whose style fit the twin fin and guys ride them good. I don't see very many of them here in Hawaii where I live but the select few shred.

Hey thanks! awesome review. I’m 6’4” 210lbs and I ride a chubby cheddar at 33.1 liters. Sometimes feels a little small but mostly it’s perfect for the waves I ride. I want one of these boards but I can’t decide on either the 5’11” at 35 liters or the 6’1” at 39.5 liters what do you think?

  • @surfnshowreviews7777

    @surfnshowreviews7777

Garrett Baker That is tough choice for sure. If you surf slow mushy waves a lot and your an intermediate surfer then the 6’1 might be a good call but that is a big increase in volume from the board your riding. If your skill level is intermediate/advanced then I would go 5’11. The 5’11 is going to be very responsive.... and it will paddle good too. I would go 5’11 because I don’t like a board to feel too boaty.

Thanks for this review. Great job. I would like to have some advice on the size of the board. I'm 5'4'' (166cm) and 62kg. I ride a SharpEye Game Changer 5'10 x 19'' 3/4 (28.5L) and in weaker waves i feel that's hard to catch up waves and keep it going. I'm intermediate to advance, being surfing for 15 years but some years without practicing... I've never rode fishes before and no twin too so I don't know what to expect. I wonder if it'd be better to ride a board smaller than my height (the 5'3 model with 27.4L) to have this skatier feeling or better go for one with almost the same volume I already ride (the 5'5 with 29.3L) or go for the 5'7 with the extra volume (31.1L)... Thanks for the advice

sylvain HADJAB I think you will like the 5’7”. The Go Fish is very loose and responsive., the twin fin set up makes the board very skatey. If I were to get another one I would get the 5’5” and I am 5’9” 160 lbs. the 5’3” paddles me good but the board was hard for me to control.

Interesting and concerning. I haven't seen a lot of footage of the midas yet they are marketing it through rob pretty hard. I picked one up but haven't had a chance to surf it yet, I am wondering now seeing this comment and lack of footage if the board is not such a great performer.

Shea Kelly I am sure the Midas is a super fun board but I have not tried one yet. This Twin Fin was tough for me to surf but I still had fun. I think I would surf better on the Midas because I could ride it with a small center Fin and that will allow me to pivot better than the Go Fish. Cheers

Two completely different boards. The Go Fish is a twin fin for starters and that will make it draw different lines completely. The Puddle Fish is a bit more performance for me and it felt like I could surf it a little more aggressive on it compared to the Go Fish.

I think the 5'5 would have gone better for you. that one seems like its too small for you. I'm your same weight and went with the 5'5 and it goes insane. I think this board is really thin for a fish so a few extra inches helps. Killer surfing either way though, cheers

This new trend of shorter fatter is hurting a lot of peoples surfing, mine included. They look like we're riding a potato chip or skimboards with fins. Sure they give quicker response but the flow is messed up. I find my 6'6 gives me more flow. It feels like the skinny board trends from the early 90s.
